Fair enough, we could put together a bespoke multi-domain email only package for you if required I guess, Just drop us an email. You would not need to transfer your domains to us. I'd not recommended catch-all either, we don't allow it on any of our plans unless a customer has a really good reason to use it. I don't know much about Daily apart from they are only making 40p per year on a .UK registration (.UK cost price for Nominet Members/Tag holders is £5.00 + VAT for 2 years). So not sure what level of support they can offer for that type of pricing, I suspect they offer domains for very little in hope that customers upgrade to their other services. You get what you pay for. We don't have any specific email only hosting plans, but our standard hosting plans all have mailboxes with POP3/IMAP/SMTP & Webmail access.

Are you after any special requirements for email (push, syncing contacts etc?) Most providers should allow you to transfer your .UK domains to them free of charge (make sure they are a Nominet member & TAG holder). For other TLD's .com etc they may be a small charge however you will find an extra year will be added on top of the domain.

I think this is a little unfair. It's not the hosting providers responsibility to ensure customers keep their scripts up to date. It would be impossible to do this, we have recently purchased some software which scans a server for popular scripts and fetches version details of the script, if a script is out of date it alerts us of this. It is then up to us to notify the customers, however when you have several hundred domains with out of date scripts on it's very time consuming... However it is the providers responsibility to keep the servers secure & related software up to date (PHP/MySQL/Apache etc). It's also good idea for hosting providers to educate their customers on the importance of keeping popular scripts such as Wordpress (and especially Joomla!) up to date to avoid them getting comprimised. We usually do this as a little reminder in newsletters and offer assistance to customers on updating their software It sounds like the company in question are simply trying to get you to upgrade to a premium package as they've almost given up on shared hosting. VPS's do have their place in hosting, but I'd personally not put anything on a 512MB server. You also need the technical ability (and time) to look after a server/VPS. The normal way we deal with compromised sites is: 1. Try and find how the site got compromised in the first place via logs 2. Attempt to try and clean up the site and get it back on-line 3. If it can be cleaned up and offending code removed, upgrade the customers script to the latest version and secure appropriately (with correct permissions on files/folders). 4. If it cannot be cleaned up, we will restore the domains content from our backups, bring the site on-line and update the script/secure it. 5. Notify the customer of the importance of keeping scripts up to date/secure, should it be compromised again and we have to use our own backups there will be a charge of £15 + VAT (our standard rate for backup retrievals).

As far as I'm aware there are not any UK resellers, we purchased from them directly.

Is there anything in the website logs to show how the domain got compromised? You should have access to these either via FTP or your hosting control panel.

As the others have said you can install some third party scripts onto some web hosting. If you are looking for a bespoke booking system, have a chat with Creospace who specialise in bespoke web based systems.

Thank you. It's known as over-selling, there is no such thing as "unlimited" bandwidth or disk space (if you read the hosts T&C's they will often have some clause in - Heart Internet comes to mind, they offer unlimited disk space/bandwidth).

Thank you, we do indeed allow multiple domains and payment via invoice isn't an issue, it's what we do for most schools. I'm interested in your comment though - how could our packages be improved to make them "great"?

Another vote for Nagios, we use it for all our servers along with some custom made scripts and it works really well. Out of interest are the servers being used for your school/educational establishment or for commercial stuff (hosting business?)

Could the source code not be released (or sold) so development can be continued?

Just to clarify this was a misunderstanding on "Wallgo"'s part, our servers are already very secure. However as he has a hosting package on a Windows package certain recommended requirements for Joomla/Moodle are not available. We fully support Joomla on our Linux Hosting.

Why? From what I've heard support is terrible, prices are OK for .UK but for any other extension they are not that cheap. I assume you are saying register the domains with 123-REG to keep them separate from the host? I've always disagreed with this statement not because we offer domain registration (we make peanuts on them anyway) but because if you don't have any faith/trust in your chosen hosting provider for your domain registration needs why bother to use them at all? Just ensure your chosen provider registers the domains in your own name, address, email etc and you should not have any problems moving them away. I'm shocked that a fellow 'professional' in the hosting business agrees with such a statement.
