I am wondering is it better practice to set up every Ipad with it's own account? From a managerial point of view that's a nightmare but someone here in the office suggested this as well........(Icloud and security being one advantage)....anyway sorry more questions/off topic..............I was also debating whether it was better to set proxy stuff up in Meraki or to force it with Apple Configurator. I don't know.... the words Meraki and Apple Configurator bring shivers to my spine.....it's not a science exactly is it....

Thanks abillybob.....it's a real pain here when the teachers all say 'Can I have this science app for this afternoon' and you have to go around to every Ipad ( which is bad enough ) and type the dastardly password into each one..... I am scared of Apple Configurator as I wiped an Ipad last time with someone's work on it ( ok you can back it up in Itunes but when you have loads of Ipads it becomes a nightmare ). The trouble with using Apple Configurator is that our Ipads all have different Apps on them.........depending on where they are........we could do a base image I suppose but it does vary ....not to mention the fact everyone seems to store all their work on them without backing them up. I am very nervous about messing with the Ipads with Apple Configurator!

Hi there I've read quite a few threads on Ipads here on Edugeek........and I recognised some of the headaches we are all having in mass deploying Ipads We use Meraki here which is ok but I still can't understand ( and it's not Meraki's fault) why is it when you push an app out you have to put in a password physically on each Ipad....is this still the case? I am a bit lost with it all as someone else set them up. I heard IOS 7 ( the new update) get's rid of these issues. Can anyone chime in here please? We had a problem here recently where the Ipads wouldn't go on the internet....quite a few suddenly stopped working. We locked down the Ipads by setting a proxy (pointing to a a .pac file ) ....which is fine, but when something goes wrong ( and I still can't workout what exactly) you find you are stuffed because you can't get to the network settings ( as they are locked down!). It would seem the only way of solving this is to put them through the Apple Configurator again ( but doing this you end up wiping them as they are supervised! I made that discovery one day to my disbelief when I suddenly blanked one). Sorry this is a general post - just wanted to see what others do nowadays.......are you still using Meraki or are you deploying apps now via your Apple Server? We've bought loads of apps with redeemable codes so I'm not sure what we do if we decided to go down another path......if there is a better solution for these things...do you lock down your network settings and .pac file it in Apple Configurator?

Hi We are experiencing a few issues with Google Earth.....when we zoom into something at great detail half the time you don't get the detail........I've done a speedtest and it's not that....I've also tried changing to Open Gl / tried putting on Safe mode...... just about everything. What I can't work out is if it's Google's servers ( surely not).......... It seems that the first search you do it zooms in fine but if you go somewhere else and zoom in it doesn't zoom in and just looks blurred. I doubt it's the on board graphics or driver......the pcs are quite fast for what they are............it's not consistent as well..........any answers on a postcard most welcome Thanks

I suspect this is something to do with Group Policy Mike........I've moved someone out of their OU into a clean one and it's not happening. I've been trying to get my head around it....IE 11 and them getting rid of IE Maintenance. I want to try and solve this without enlisting the boss to help but where to start............I suppose one way is kidding IE 11 to pretend it's v10 ...but that doesn't get around the problem really.........

I think we were asked to put IE 11 on as the kids needed it for programming (Visual Studio was it?) .....and it's been rolled out globally......it could be messy trying to remove it on 800 pcs.....in the middle of term time What I am curious about is that so far this is only happening for 2 users. I wonder if it's their profile or something in there. I might reset one and see if that makes a difference.

Favorites work when you close IE and then open it again - (ie the second time around) the favorite opens on the first tab. It's something a bit buggy about 11 for sure.

We do redirect our favourites apparently...........so perhaps its something to do with that...I will experiment and report back.

Cheers Mike - the only thing is everything has been working fine on IE 10 - it's since we have upgraded to IE 11 last week we have noticed this......

I don't think we do Michael - their favourites are part of their profile all in one folder

Hi there Has anyone come across this one before........you open a favourite from your list in IE and the first tab is just blank. You wait and it's still blank. If you right click over the favourite and open it in a new tab it opens everytime. I've tried to reset IE but this hasn't worked. I thought it was a one off but it's happening for more than one user- but only seen in twice now. Anyone can suggest anything? Thanks for your help. It could be a buggy IE11 thing.

Hi there everyone I often find myself having to install software onto our Windows 7 machines manually.....one at a time and do exactly the same thing. It's often when there's only an .exe and no msi of the software and I'm in a rush. It's so laborious. Can anyone recommend some software - ( free if possible ) that will mirror my mouse clicks /keyboard stuff live to a whole bunch of pcs.... I have searched for many things over the years. I don't really want to use a Macro Recorder...... Anyway if anyone can chime in and suggest something I would be most grateful. Cheers

Hi everyone I've shared a printer via USB on a Mac ( Mountain Lion I do believe) and everyone can print to it fine from our other various macs. Trouble is when all the kids print and something goes wrong I jump onto the mac the printer is shared off and I can't see any print jobs in the print queue for that printer - so we can't cancel them from that particular mac the printer is connected to. Any advice most appreciated. Thanks

Hi everyone I just wanted to follow this up........... I found out for those 3 macs I can browse to their hard drives from my windows 7 via their IP address but not through their name. So perhaps it is something to do with DNS and the machines have no registered themselves in the DNS server ( I have set the preferences in the Macs to point at our DNS server). It's interesting it's just Mountain Lion macs with the problem.

Hi I can't browse to our Mountain Lion macs from my pc. I can to the Snow Leopard ones. Any suggestions please? All 3 are doing the same so it must be something to do with Mountain Lion. I've tried installing a different Samba on one of them ( was it called SMBUP or something....) but had no luck. It's not permissions I don't think....at least I have set them up the same as the Snow Leopard ones. I am at a loss to know what to try. Cheers for your advice. Mike

I am really curious about this Iphoto thing now. When I try to open Iphoto on a mac that has been logged into our domain , I get the error : The library could not be opened because the file system of the library is unsupported. So Iphoto cannot be setup on an NTFS drive (i.e that being his windows user area). I wonder where your Iphoto stuff is being stored. On the Mac Mini? I found this post from someone else..... iPhoto does not support working with a library over network protocols e.g. CIFS, AFP. This is as true for iPhoto '09 as it is for iPhoto '11. Apple probably added a check into iPhoto '11 due to receiving complaints from users who found iPhoto didn't work over network protocols. It's looking like if I want to use Iphoto and a windows domain I need to purchase a mac mini server. Blimmin' Iphoto!

Hey Carter thanks for your advice as well.....I understand what you mean now ( with the login thing ). It's a massive step forward. The big question for me is Iphoto now and where it stores it's files on a windows network ( it's Art that use the macs of course).

Thanks Kirchie! I am finally getting somewhere. I can try that suggestion now - good stuff. Iphoto contains a library - it's one big file ( like a zip file ). It contains the structure and the pictures. Apple have advised me not to store this on the windows shares, due to the fact it can corrupt ( possibly ) as you are saving over a network to this potentially big file. So I ask myself, should it be stored locally, on the mac mini server, or somewhere else? I am wondering what happens when you use Iphoto with a mac mini server and a windows domain - does the Iphoto file get written to the mac mini and stored there or their 'My Pictures' in their windows home folder....hmm..... So all the work of theirs in your school bascially sits on the windows server......well that's the way to go isn't it......

Thanks for chiming in everyone. I might not be explaining things correctly. Currently the users do have to type in their AD windows username and password on the macs - they first click the button 'Other' then they log in with their AD username and password. Issues are, they want to use Iphoto. Where should they be storing this file? I could ask why bother to buy a mac mini server when they can already login to the domain using the windows domain controllers? If I were to buy a mac mini server and join it domain is there much work to be done on it in terms of setting up users? I read on the blurb Mountain Lion integrates with Active Directory really well. You are not storing work on your mac mini server so the mac mini is serving what purpose? To control logins and desktops e.t.c? Sorry I'm just trying to get a feel for what I should do ( it sounds like I need to buy one!). Thanks for your advice, very useful. Mike
