What is Stas please James? ( The fact I am asking means we are probably not using it!) Which settings are you after ......... Thanks for trying to help - I really appreciate it!

Thanks for trying to help me. We have an on going problem about this that is causing everyone lots of headaches.........it's very annoying. It seems that when people are signed into the UTM on the macs via the UTM client, after a period the macs seem to 'sign out'. The UTM client looks like it is signed in (not being greyed out).......but if you go to any https site Google Chrome reports NT CERT INVALID an attacker might be trying to steal your information ....if you refresh the page the page then loads. This can be happening an awful lot in the day. It means if people are signed into Microsoft Outlook Web Access (or any site ) they end up losing their work. Also in Media, the pupils might be uploading videos to youtube ( via the web browser ) and they walk away........come back and the video upload has hung ( yet the client is still signed in ). So this is causing lots of problems. Before we used browser based authentication but this caused issues ( you have to keep the tab open and allow pop ups) ). People kept on closing the authentication tab that was open ( and people were complaining ) so we moved over to the UTM Client. This problem means that people are having to keep opening new tabs in Chrome then refreshing the page - whilst it doesn't sound like much it's highly annoying for the users. If this issue happens we suggest going to http://www.bbc.co.uk then it seems to load that page and allow them to carry on. The trouble is exorted .mov Final Cut videos hanging when uploading to Youtube is not acceptable. I've tried it from both Final Cut and Directly to youtube in the browser and it seems to fall over.......not always. Our PCS give us no issues at all with the UTM. This issue has been occurring on both AD joined macs and standalone macs. Our DNS is set to our DNS Server/Domain controller. The Sophos UTM client certificate is set to Trusted in System and also I copied it to Users/Shared on the macs. One thing someone has tried is to run a page refresher which one person has reported 'has stopped him signing out of the internet'. I am not convinced the client is actually signing out of the internet as it is not greyed out but purple. This problem is happening around the school. I have spoken to Sophos and they suggested running Wireshark to capture on port 9980 but invariably I start it off then come back at the end of the day and it has crashed or not captured. Very frustrating. Sophos are trying to ascertain at what time does this occur vs looking at the log files. We use Mavericks on a lot of Macs and El Capitan on the more recent ones. I've noticed up in Art when searching in Safari sometimes you get the 'this website is not secure' message about google or the bbc.........so it happens up there.... So to sum up, when the page stops they refresh it and it then loads the page - it seems to be only for https sites........it happens in Safari and Chrome on different macs...... We are using Sophos UTM client 1.50 ( I can't see an update to this ). Sophos say none of their other customers are experiencing this issue ( to their knowledge ) . We have updated the UTM firewall to the latest version but alas this made no difference. One thing I noticed was in Media Studies I set the macs not lock the screen with a password after 5 minutes as I noticed this was causing it to drop the internet when they got back to their desks if they were to pop out. Maybe there is a setting in the Firewall somewhere that causes this timeout? We've been looking everywhere but can't spot it. Thanks ( and sorry for such a long post!)

Hi everyone Is anyone here using Sophos UTM and macs please? We have an issue here we can't resolve and it would be helpful if someone else is using this with macs. Thanks

Hi Antonio We have been using these macs fine with Final Cut for 5 years now - zero problems. So whilst 8gb is not as ideal as 16gb it has been fine for us for 5 years ( for 5 minute movies ). I have asked them to quit applications. I don't think it made a difference.

Hi there. Thanks Antonio. I thought at first it could be Adobe as these macs had Adobe CC just installed on them - but we have others with it on as well. They haver 8gb RAM / Core I5s ......not joined to AD just using local accounts. I wonder if it's because they have lots of apps open. Trouble is in a subject like media they will use Final Cut, After effects, ITunes, Photoshop, Word,Garageband. Things have been fine so far but this issue has cropped up since I installed Adobe CC ( that is not to say it's causing the issue). I can't take any macs out of the suite at the moment as I don't have spares and all their work is on them. Thanks for your help.

Hi there I've noticed a couple of macs here on Sierra are just going black when you log out of them. You then have to force power them down. The cursor is moving so they aren't freezing. Has anyone got any advice please on how they might troubleshoot this? They have all our Final Cut stuff on so it's making me a little uncomfortable. Thanks a lot Mike

Yes thanks sted. I will delete the other device or disable it just to be sure........ I've got a feeling this problem is not going to be straightforward ( as usual ). -

That is a good point! They use a USB standard connector to standard power connector so yes Michael that would be the next logical thing to do .....thanks -
HDMI Sound dropping are splitters the problem

Thanks Michael. The splitters are powered by USB from the computer . We have 30 of them or so here. -
Hi there Has anyone come across audio dropping in HDMI.........sorry that sounds vague ...........these problems are a devil to solve. We have various monitors screens here which use HDMI.....but we split the HDMI signal so one goes to a monitor and the other to the big screens (various makes). In Device manager you get 2 sound options - realtek audio and Intel Audio - it's set to Intel . The monitor is not appearing as a sound source. Periodically the sound goes when you are logged into windows -. I am trying to see if there is a pattern here but of course it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack. It seems when the pc is logged in the sound will suddenly stop randomly and only a reboot will cure it. Does anyone else here us HDMI splitters and have you found any problems like this please? The picture stays on fine when the sound goes............and the Intel Display Audio device doesn't dissappear. The HDMI cables aren't that log for most rooms ( say 5m or less) and are good quality. We have Dell and HP here ( although both Intel chipsets ) so I am wondering if the computer/ drivers could be at fault or the HDMI splitters.. Thanks for your help and advice.

That's great Arthur .....really helpful to us all ....thank you .

Sorry Stormborn..........I didn't reply here ( I thought others might have something to say about it ). If you create a new keychain then as I understand it forgets all your other previous passwords to sites e.t.c so these need entering again ( which is a pain for a lot of people with remembered passwords). Update keychain would be the thing to use.......

Yeh so sorry I went a bit offtopic on this post...... If someone could explain how their home directories are set up ( ie how you map from mac>windows with e.g.Documents, Pictures) I'd be grateful - I'm still a bit confused how it works when you mount a windows home directory on a mac and when you save where does it go (e.g Pictures>My Pictures) e.t.c Thanks
-
Cheers diddylord. The trouble is people don't know what to select when this message pops up and what consequences it will have. It's not the most descriptive of boxes if you ask me.

Sorry for this extra question but suddenly thought of it. The other thing I was going to ask concerned keychains. What do you all tend to do about this on your windows network ( with macs ). If someone resets their windows password do you delete their keychain folder? My experience is it's nothing but a complete pain seeing the keychain window popping up all the time. Utter pain!

Thank you for all your help and posts over this. So I am curious........if you open their My Documents on the Windows network - how does the mac home directory sit inside that? (Or do they save locally then copy the data across to their Windows My Documents?). How do you map the Pictures folder from the Mac to the Pictures folder on the windows network? ( as you are using Samaba and NTFS I presume) Thanks

Hi there I might regret posting this ! Can anyone recommend a good 100 inch TV with good sound built in / where to buy one from please? We've been looking on the web ..........sorry not being lazy - have used the popular companies in the past (high street) but this is a bit more specialised......I guess they don't want to spend too much ( isn't that always the case!) Thanks.

From memory ( as I wasn't the person who put our mac system in) the reason we went over to Centrify and Acronis had to do with home directories and Mac users having to log onto the same mac for certain programs ( as some software wanted to save to the local drive) That was years ago now. Do people here just mount windows home shares via samba and save all their mac stuff into a folder in their windows home area over Samba ( and use Magic Triangle ). I seem to recall the mounts not staying/being persistent..... Of course I will go through setting up Profile Manager....just wanted to know how others approach it (

Hi there We need to upgrade Mac Server soon........and move on from Workgroup Manager ( which has been simple and stable ). I was just wondering what was involved in getting all the users from Workgroup Manager into Profile Manager. I wanted to put some feelers out as to what people use with their Macs and Windows servers. Currently we use Acronis Connect and Centrify which on the whole is fine but we are having one or two issues.......Acronis is good in that you can save through AFP to Windows NTFS and Centrify works well with their AD logins. Can I ask other people use setting up a Mac Server with windows shares ( and pupil shares / home directories ) - do you use Samba ? I've read Samba isn't too great and I recall years ago my colleague trying it and running into problems mounting shares and keeping them persistent e.t.c I'd be interested in hearing from anyone else who uses Centrify and Acronis Connect and the reasons for doing so - or how you set your Macs up in a windows network ( do you save to windows shares / mount their window home directories / where do you store their Mac desktops and home areas?) Thanks for your advice

Hi there We have a Windows 7 PC that reports Windows 7 won't activate. When I try to run slmgr /ato it reports Error Product key not found. It can find a Key Management Server (it reports software licensing service version with a number which is reporting the same number when I try it on other pcs) If I do slmgr /dlv it reports the same. I've tried clearing the KMS cache and re-joining it to our KMS server ( which it says it has found). DNS is not an issue either. Short of re-imaging it which would be cheating can anyone thing of anything else I could try please? I've tried removing from the domain and re-adding - no luck. Really stumped. Thanks for your help

Hi there We've got some Kyocera printers with our macs. They seem to be quite slow printing to them in a class. They are fine with PCs. I am done spending too much more time on it now. It must be the drivers What colour laser printer makes would others recommend for Macs that might be quicker please? We normally use HP here for other printers around the school - I've not really experimented.... Any feedback would be most appreciated. Cheers.

Hi. We have an issue with our mini Optiplex pcs and large screen monitors here. It's driving everyone crazy. The sound in the day will periodically drop from the tv/desktop pc until you reboot them. They are plugged in via HDMI. I've disabled the other audio device in Device Manager ( the onboard Realtek ) but it's still dropping audio. Has anyone had this issue before please? The pcs aren't going into any kind of lower power mode ( they aren't even set to do any power management from what I can see). Thanks for your advice.

Hi there Got a bit of a weird problem on Friday afternoon ( of all times ). On our mac mini server I've been locked out of the local admin account. Fortunately I created another local admin account ....so can log in with that. I tried changing the password of the first account in Open Directory manager ....but when I try to unlock the local admin account it doesn't work. What figures ! I can see User and Groups in the System Preferences nd see the original Local Admin account here but I can't click on it to select it- it's like it's greyed out.....is that because the Local Admin account is logged in and I can't unlock it with the password? What could have happened.........it's odd. I could reboot the mac mini but I don't really want to at the moment as I have some kind of access to it! Any help greatly appreciated ( on a hot Friday afternoon!) Thanks

Hi We've got a weird problem here for one particular user. Her email is defaulting to 365 on the IOS Outlook app - you can't set it up with her Exchange. We tried another Ipad and still the same. Tried deleting her 365 account and re-creating it again - but it's still the same . Can you think where the setting might be where this is happening? We've tried it on a phone ( Android ) and it is still defaulting........we've been searching all afternoon and come up with nothing. Either it's in the profile somewhere........any ideas gratefully received. Thanks
