  1. Hi there We've set things up so the macs print to an IP printer on a windows print server. The trouble I'm having is jobs get backed up. When you go to the printers and faxes folder on the individual macs you can't see the print jobs.... You jump onto the print server and they aren't sitting there....but they are being sent to the printer ( loads of Iphoto high res print jobs!) Do you have to use Cups to view these print jobs for all users or is there a way of seeing the print jobs for all users in the print and fax area of OS X? It has been a long term mystery for me how to cancel print jobs and where they seem to be going......(they are not sitting on the printer!) Thanks for your help Mike
  2. I'm not sure what people will be backing up - I am sure people will use it for both personal and work. I'm more concerned about how to back up the apps and the data they do on them. The thing I am thinking is that if you ask people to back things up - they don't do they. With something like Icloud it seems very easy - but of course it needs paying for. We use foldr which is ok but compared to just sliding an Icloud switch - well that's much easier. Would you say Icloud is easier than Google Drive or OneDrive? y
  3. Hi everyone I was going to try to get a feel for what people use for their Ipad backup in schools....for teachers. Do you invest in Icloud backup or are you using Itunes ( or are even people backing up their stuff?) Google Drive is another but it looks like Icloud is the easiest no brain solution.... Just interested in what people do. Thanks
  4. Hi there I wondered if some Visual Studio expert could help out there.....I am so out of my depth! One of the pupils here has saved a project ( she tells me ) in Visual Studio 2015 - it's a .suo file. When I try to open that a) it doesn't associate with it - anyway there's a page of what looks like hex coming up in Visual Studio Community 2015 where she would expect to see her program. Is this .suo file the main Visual Basic 2015 project file? All her other project bits are there it seems.....I can see forms e.t.c I don't know if something has corrupted .....or what is expected! Thanks for your advice.
  5. We found out what the issue was. Well I didn't but my clever manager did. In User Configuration/Windows Settings/Folder Redirection - if you right click over 'Favourites' and go to properties/settings we had to untick 'Grant the User exclusive rights to Favourites' and untick 'Move the contents of Favourites to the new location'. There was an error in event log ( a red error ) that had Favorites in it - it was trying to copy favorites from an old server.....
  6. Hi Chuckster. I can see one yellow warning - The Folder Redirection Policy Application has been delayed until the next logon because the group policy logon optimiaton is in effect. Thanks for trying to help.
  7. Hi there Suddenly it's got really slow for the students logging in here. It's getting stuck at the Folder Redirection Policy. I can't think of anything that has changed here in the last few weeks. This is a big subject I realise but are there any tips or things I might be able to check? The students here use a mandatory profile...I am going to copy the policy and work through it but I just don't know where to start. Thanks for any advice you can give me.
  8. It is something to do with Impero client. We have removed it off the macs for now.,
  9. Hi everyone Hope you can help .....really spent all day frustrated trying to solve this! We upgraded our Macs to El Capitain from Mavericks. Now none of our printers work on the Macs. You send a print job and it just says 'paused' for all print jobs. You can 'Resume' as I added that for all users to be able to do that in Mavericks but that doesn't start printing..the jobs just stay there. It is happening for all our printers - networked and USB. Something tells me it's not drivers..... I can print a test page from Cups to any of these printers be it networked or USB . What does that indicate ? It's like the printing subsystem is a bit screwed up. I did try 'resetting the print system' in the print dialogue by holding down CTRL but that hasn't worked. Any Mac experts out there I'd be so grateful as time wise I am running out of ideas! Thank you.
  10. Hi I want to run a command dseditgroup -o edit -a everyone -t group _lpadmin to allow people to be able to resume their print jobs on OS X. What is the best way of getting this command pushed out to all the macs please? It needs to run as an admin. I think you have to use Automator and run a shell script - I got that far and opened up 'Run Shell Script' in Automator but how do I run it as a local admin without needing to put the password in? Sorry it's basic stuff ! Thanks for your advice.
  11. How are you getting on JGMitchell.....just interested ! Did you manage to get all your apps pushed out to your Ipads?
  12. Very interesting...... I wonder what he bought....i.e. 'something better'. I've heard Profile Manager is a bit buggy but not sure yet as I've not tried it out. JGMitchell: I agree - it's not so bad users having to click 'Install'. Sometimes I find one needs to be able (or wants to ) remote straight onto the Ipad to look at settings.....rather than ask someone for their Ipad.... Anyway I will get stuck in soon and give it a go like jgmitchell.....
  13. Ahh thanks. That's what we have done so far (purchases Apps via VPP/ individual itunes accounts for each Ipad)......so at least we can move over to an Apple Server like you have without too much fuss.....I am reading up about it now ( DEP and MDM ).... It's interesting your experiences with Meraki.....anyway let's hope someone can help you out with a solution to your current woes. I am bound to end up experiencing the same issues!
  14. Thanks jgmitchell. We are in the same boat as you. Exactly the same issue with Meraki. It seems to install some but not others so you have to grab the Ipad ( which is a PITA) . We have a mac mini server here so I might give it a go....I was just wondering if we needed to change something with our purchased apps already...... Did you give each Ipad a separate Apple ID? Anyway sorry I don't want to hijack your thread for some technical help!....I am going to have to do the same as you though in the coming days
  15. Would you care to elaborate on that Brimstone? Only I was thinking of doing the same thing myself. Meraki is ok but I find it a bit confusing......I'm not sure if the 'put a password in on installing an app' has been cured yet..... The trouble is once you start up with one system moving over to something else seems a big struggle. What do you use Brimstone? jgmitchell: May I ask why you are moving off Meraki? .....just interested.
  16. We discovered the command 'FORFILES' in command prompt which can be used to delete these files ( you can use this to delete cookies as well)......we are trying to script this so it just deletes these files older than 30 days with 'FORFILES' Mike
  17. If you open command prompt and do a dir *.* in Recent you can see all the shortcuts. Why can't you see them in Explorer when you browse to them?
  18. Hi there I've noticed lots of files building up in the 'Recent' folder in the roaming profile. It seems to be some kind of folder called 'Files'. There's loads of shorcuts in there.. It makes logging on really slow. We seem to have all the views switched on windows......but you can't browse to this folder ( if it is a folder ). I can also see a couple of other of folders called 'AutomaticDestinations'.....you can browse to these - but it's this object 'Files' that contains all the little shorcuts. Can anyone shed any light on this please? It's definitley causing our slow logons. What is this Files 'thing' if you can't see it? Thanks
  19. Hi there...... I will fire these out into the IT hemisphere to see if anyone has had these issues......thanks for any advice....Firefox just seems to work better that Safari - maybe it's just me - hope I don't start a flame war! I say it works better but then I have these technical problems Safari doesn't so maybe I should take that back Firefox seems to keep popping up on the macs 'Only one copy of Firefox can run at a time'. At first I though it was because 2 users were logged onto 2 macs and tried to open Firefox simultaneously but I have seen the error with just one person logged into one mac. This sort of issue can occurr on a windows network if Firefox locks it's processs..... Can you use Firefox simultaneously on a pure Mac Network? I've no experience of it. Just to add more into the mix we run 'Centrify' here that stores out mac files on a windows network. It could be the issue but I don't think it's a Centrify issue - more a generic one. I read you can unlock the file but will I have to keep doing that every time? I can't see that working... Another question. Can you lock down people being able to install Add Ons? I came across one method but it was so convoluted. I am suprised Firefox doesn't ask you for an admin password when installing Add Ons....considering how potentially dodgy some of them might be. Any advice greatfully received. Thanks
  20. I am narrowing this down. It's something to do with the root IE settings in Group Policy. I will report back!
  21. Just want to add ( not that his helps) when you 'Run as Administrator' logged in as these users IE starts ..... I can't understand why the problem isn't consistent for the same user on different ( but identical) pcs.
  22. Hi I'm really stuck with this one.....I know this is like trying to find a needle in a haystack We have a situation here where some pupils can't open IE. It just does nothing when you click on it. If you move next door to another pc with the same user they can open it fine. If you clear the local profiles from the pc and try it works. The trouble is IE is quite locked down in a school so you can't easily get inside it to see what is going on. We have a generic profile that is non writeable - applied to all the pupils. It doesn't save desktop when the log off. I have seen this issue around the school before.....in the past - all we did was clear local profiles off. When I move the pupil out of the GPO IE starts ok - so it's probably something inside Group Policy....but it's a minefield trying to go through every setting. It could be anything! I am working my way through IE group policy settings but chances are it's not even that. I don't know how to trouble shoot this one. Can anyone suggest where I might look? It's a tough one....I know. Thanks. Thanks for any advice you can give.
  23. Thanks Win. Trouble is we use this user on many pcs be it exams or interview situations so we're not always in the same room. It's handy to know that though. Thanks.
  24. I got this working everyone. You have to go to group policy, look at the Excel 2010 settings, then went to Disable Items in User Interface, Disable shorcut keys - then I typed 118,0 for the virtual key codes and that stops people pressing F7 to get spelling check.
  25. I've managed to switch it off now - it's just a shortcut key now ( which I've tried everything!)
