Best bet for a DSLR is a Nikon D7200 and 2 lenses. Best for just Photography and good for Video. But I see you want to Video as well with the DSLR, so checkout the Canon range that you can install Magic Lantern on. It turns a Canon DSLR into a Full HD camcorder. So that will give you the best of both. Preferably get a Canon you can plug an external Mic into. What model you choose depends on your budget.

Yes we just started using RULER connect. The one BIG disappointment is that to make AD and O365 accounts it relies on an email address for your organisation being present in SIMS. I don't know of any schools that put School email addresses in SIMS. That is the biggest setback in setting it all up. There is still some manual intervention required. Whereas SALAMANDER tools will create new users in AD and Office265 from a rule setup using an algorithm from a users Firstname Surname and year of intake etc,.... So there is no manual intervention needed when a use Pupil or staff member is added into SIMS..

For us we gave up on redirecting the Windows 10 Menu and tiles. We just let Windows 10 build a standard menu on the installed apps on the PC, and then added menu shortcuts and tiles to it with an XML file.

Try this to see if the database name is correct on the client. Go to C:/ Programdata, then go into the Discover folder. Within that, there will be a Config file. Open the Config file, and where it says “Database Name”, change it from “Discover” to whatever your discover database name is. It was wrong for me now it works.

I do agree the Casio XJ-M130/M140 range is by far the best overall cost effective solution. We have over 40 of these now bought over last 2 years. Very Bright, Very Quiet, No bulbs to replace, no filter cleaning except the occasional wipe off for a dusty top surface. In maintenance man hours saved and cost of bulbs saved the extra purchase expense pays for the projector in 2 years in a classroom. Plus teachers are happier projectors are better and don't break down. I would definitely recommend these. There are brighter bigger ones in the range for main halls too. And with the 5yr warranty for education and 20,000 hours life expected you win all round.

We have been using TMG for a number of years now. It works fine and category filtering is great. Recently though the popup for Windows Security has started popping up on certain websites like AMAZON for instance. A use can type their network logon and password and tick “remember my credentials” box, but it keep popping up. I cannot see what the solution is. It is baffling. The TMG logs don’t give any clue either. Happens for all users going through TMG, even us administrators. Anyone care to hazard a guess on what this is please?

I totally agree. It is a design fault on these projectors. And the deep optical clean is a swizz. It does not clear the fault with sutting down. Either the fans loose efficiency or the Thermister becomes faulty and cuts out.

Well we stripped down the projector, cleaned it and put it back together. It is still teh same fault. Powers off after 10 mins and fans spin up high. Classic overheating. Not cost effective to send for repair.

No we don't have a good sensor unfortunatly. Can't remove a good projector either to swap parts. .. Although Sanyo say fans ?? Is that just a guess by Sanyo, I wonder, or a known fault. Not very good that these projectors all show the same fault after 3 years.

Fans clean and spinning up fine (not noisey) All heatsinks and heat ducting pathways are OK. Bulb is brand new. (we always try that first) Sensors are clean andc working as expected. (barring testing them under heat with a meter)

Problems...Problems...Problems.... We have about 10 of these Sanyo PLC-XE32 projectors. All installed in the same year (2008) In the last few months they have started randomly shutting off. It seems like it's overheating somehow. Luckily one was still under warranty so we sent it back. (to Sanyo repairer TP Matrix) They said it needed a new set of fans under warranty and a Deep Optical clean at £95 extra. (I suspect they were just cashing in) So we had 3 that were out of warranty that was cutting out every 10 mins. With nothing to lose we stripped on right down, quite easily. There was not much dust or debris inside at all. The fans were surprisingly clean and no signs of heat build-up anywhere. No optics were dirty or melted and all seemed to be OK. (We have seen projectors that are older than 5 years in a worse state that didn't cut out and jsut needed a clean) So the question is, is there a inherent design fault on these projectors? Do you have this model and is that showing the fault? How did you fix it?

We, like many orther schools, have gone for PCounter. There is a free trial you can download and loads of add-in extras. As soon as we impelmented PCounter our printing costs, paper useage and toner purchasing went down substantually. Now I can spot abusers and control costs. Only had it for 6 months but I would highly recommend it. Now we are all ready for sending quartely printing invoices to each dept from April when new budgets start. Happy days.

Well Motorola have just released the DROID in the USA and it is getting some great reviews. It has the Google Maps Sat Nav installed and its free. Others are set to follow with their own models. I guess this may well be the IPhone rival we technical people have been waiting for. I think My Windows Mobile 5 phone may get an upgrade.

Whatever you decide as a job title, salary, benefits and job description whatever you do do not change it after TUPE. When you change one thing after TUPE you loose all teh protection offered under the TUPE agreement. So as a sly way to make to redundant teh TUPE company might offer you a promotion and then a P45 6 months later. Consult teh union if you are in one. if not then join now.

BSF and IT SUPPORT There really are a few important elements here. IT Support needs to remain a permanent people resource on site in high schools, colleges and universities. The IT support staff needs to be there for instant on site actions such as setting up equipment, moving equipment, fixing faults, etc... It is important for trained and knowledgeable IT Support staff to be on-site being involved with teachers, the curriculum planning, pupils, the school’s leadership/management team and the Local authority. Managed IT cannot even hope to understand and be involved to such a degree. You have to be there full time and be involved to fully understand. I agree with the BSF strategy that can see centralised purchasing agreements for bulk buying servers, networks, Laptops, software and other such supplies. The LA or a major supplier could easily have an agreed shopping list for IT managers to pick from at agreed prices. That makes some sense and does help to unify and bring all schools up to a agreed level of resources and technology. BUT that does stifle those schools that are really innovative and have an existing excellent IT provision. We all can see that some schools do need a leg-up when it comes to IT management and provision. This needn’t be done with a fully outsourced IT service. In fact it is better not to farm-out IT support totally. What BSF should do is offer the best of both for schools. The schools should retain IT staff on site, employed by the school or LA. There should be meetings and forums setup where the LA or a single supplier would meet with school all of IT managers and agree what should be supplied and how. That way all schools can input and innovate and all schools can get on a more level playing field. Then local IT managers can liaise with the School leadership and move IT forwards in schools. Sharing best practise, ideas and knowledge can also be achieved between schools. There should also be a second level of IT support available again from a single company or LA employed that is available to schools as a technical resource working across many schools to ensure IT is being implemented in a consistent manner across the LA. If you like this level of support is your MS accredited and technical expert that the school cannot afford to employ full time. No-one gains from outsourcing IT support and resources except the outsourcing companies who have to make a profit. So either service is cut or prices increased form initially agreed levels. IT expertise is lost form schools and local authorities. IT support and innovation becomes distant and hard to reach. IT becomes less important to schools and starts to diminish and be less innovative. The use of Open Source and other great innovative and creative services would cease to exist as we now see happening. In short IT support should not be outsourced because of BSF. BSF money should not be used as a noose around schools necks or a bribe to get schools to make bad choices. I used to work for a company that was heavily into PFI bids and managed services. The level of detail even went down to what toilet roll was provided when taking over a building management contract and what type of mouse to use when taking over an IT facility. So the outsourcing supplier really does end up going into ridiculous details and then the company or authority is really tied to that for 5 to 10 years. That really is a big constraint. The level of details also means the outsourcing supplier then starts to increase prices when extras and changes are required (such as different soap in the toilets!) and that is where the big money is made and the LA or school ends up being forced to accept less or a service or pay more for the same service they would have got if they have not outsourced in the first place. We need to learn that PFI and BSF in its current all-or-nothing existence do not really work. So let’s take the best bits of BSF and use them, and make the rest of our schools support and provision of services work for us in a positive manner. Will no-one ever learn from mistakes from the past, or are we just destined to repeat the same mistakes. Just look at the privatised industries left by the last conservative government and this Labour government. We now pay more for poorer services. I can quote gas, electric, trains, buses, post, telecommunications etc..... These industries were sold off to raise quick funds in the short term and the long term financial and service planning was completely forgotten about. It makes me wonder if these sold off industries had remain nationalised if we would have been hit quite so bad by the current credit crunch. I am happy in my IT management job and as my school has good IT support and provision we should be able to opt out without being penalised financially.

I'd go for a Samsung NC10, good batt life and great keyboard. The 10.2" screen is the perfect trade off between size and portability. We have 35 of these in school. If you need a cheaper option the Acer Aspire One series is a good 2nd choice, especially if you buy the Linux version.
