Won't a simple alias in DNS do the trick? Also, you could add an entry to the hosts file for a quick and dirty way of doing it.

BLOXX is a good solution but it's around £3K per year. Can't help you with BYOD though as we don't allow any personal devices at all. If it's not school equipment it doesn't get anywhere near our network and that includes external trainers or people coming in to do talks or assemblies.

We use BLOXX. It's fairly expensive at around £3K per year, but for ease of use and featureset I can't complain, and it has completely killed ALL anonymous proxy use. The pupils hate it!

I don't think it does happen when using SOLUS3, but there are occasions where a manual install is needed and it's from this that I want to block Adobe Reader

Change Request: 1310-1220480 When running SIMSInst.exe it installs Adobe Reader with no option to deselect it. We use FoxIT PDF reader in school and have zero need for an extra install of an unwanted product. The installer SHOULD be checking the registry to see if there is software registered for the .pdf filetype, but instead it appears to be simply looking for Adobe Reader itself, and installs it if not present which smacks of lazy practices. SIMS is introducing new unwanted software to a production environment when this is completely avoidable. - Has anybody else found this, or is there a workaround to block the Adobe Reader install? Thanks.

I normally clear out: Windows Temp Temporary Internet Files User's temp folder Windows Updates from C:\Windows ***NOTE: Do NOT delete the folder C:\windows\$hf_mig$ but you CAN delete any folder starting C:\windows\$NtUninstall*** (If you do the above, you cannot uninstall any applied updates!) net stop wuauserv Delete the contents of C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution The above should save you anywhere between 2 and 6GB if that helps. EDIT: Just re-read and didn't realise the OP was from 2009! Also had a chuckle at those of you thinking that 12-28GB is big for an image! Current image size with compression: 45GB

Hi all, Although there are probably numerous threads on this subject, I wanted to come at it from a slightly different angle. What I'm looking for is criticism and questions! Let me outline what I do on a Windows 7 image: - Put a new HDD into the PC/Laptop (this HDD NEVER gets Sysprepped) - Install Windows 7 via USB stick - Add all drivers from Dell CD - Install all Windows Updates via the web - Install all departmental software and essentials such as Java from our shared "Software" drive that sits on an Application server, and register all software that requires it - Final check for additional Windows updates - Scandisk & Defrag - Reboot to Ghost session and capture HDD in image file - Swap HDD back out and place in safe, insert original laptop HDD - Deploy image taken previously - Reboot and allow laptop to settle down installing hardware if required - Reboot, run sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /unattend:c:\windows\system32\sysprep\unattend.xml - Boot to Ghost session and capture SYSPREPPED image to network - Reboot laptop and allow sysprepped installation to run through the oobe, join domain etc. - If successful, deploy sysprepped image to second laptop for testing I don't use Microsoft RIS, or any other deployment tools other than those listed above. My question is this: Am I making work for myself? Doing it wrong? Leaving myself open for malfunctioning images? I've done it the above way since Windows XP and any issues I've had were usually down to me not doing something properly! Came across this thread and had a thought about it - apologies for bumping such an old post. The ip4 issue seems to be when DNS contains multiple entries for a host; probably due to having LAN and WLAN configured and active at the same time. Log on to your DNS servers and scavenge stale records, do a ipconfig /flushdns on your Solus3 server and also an ipconfig /registerdns on the machine with the ipv4 issue. You could also reboot here but I'm not sure it makes a difference. Finally delete the machine from Solus3 and then re-add it. It should now be able to reach the machine.

Oh dear, the motherboard battery appears to have fallen out...

I just called One Connect Ltd who have taken over from CLEO. They were very abrupt and basically just said "It's our box and you can't have the password." I said "What's stopping me removing the motherboard battery?" Them: "You are not allowed to do that. It's our property and you would be in breach of contract if you did that." Me: "I don't have a copy of this supposed contract. Can you send me a copy please?" Them: "No. I have no idea where they are." Me: "You might want to stop referring to yourselves as a 'helpdesk'. 'hinderdesk' is more appropriate" Them: "Was there anything else?" Haha.

Cumbria secondary school here. We purchased a BLOXX appliance a few years ago and loved it so much that we upgraded to the 1250W. The appliance is excellent, support is good and proxy abuse is now practically zero. It will cost you a fair bit of money initially, but I cannot speak highly enough of it.

Does ANYBODY know the BIOS password to get into one of the CLEO NED boxes? They were the original cachepilot replacements. I want to re-use the box but cannot boot to anything other than the HDD because the BIOS is locked. Obviously I could remove the motherboard battery but I thought I'd try here first. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

UPDATE: The new NSS v11.00.001 fixes a lot of these problems - if you are having similar issues I advise to download asap!

Hi, RE: NSS v11 on WinXP SP3 clients, self-built using Asus M4A78LTM-LE boards that use ATI Radeon 3000 onboard graphics. After no end of trouble using machines with AMD/ATI chipsets, I am about to restrict our IT purchasing to Intel and Nvidia chipsets only as I NEVER have any NetSupport-related issues using non-AMD/ATI chipsets NetSupport's stock response is "use screen scrape, and yes we know that AMD drivers are rubbish" which doesn't help me in the slightest. Does anybody have any tips or suggestions on how to get NSS v11 and AMD/ATI VGA drivers to play nicely together? Many thanks, Jason
