https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2020/11/hands-on-with-the-apple-m1-a-seriously-fast-x86-competitor/ Preliminary benchmarks of a real life Apple M1 based system. It's impressive.

Am I the only one who thought immediately of this?

Where do you get your internet from?
Norphy replied to mrhall's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
As a MAT, we have various P2P L2 Ethernet circuits and two breakouts to the internet at different sites, all provisioned by Charterhouse Voice and Data. The circuits themselves are all 1gbps and are provided by both OpenReach and Virgin, in an attempt to have at least some carrier diversity. It all works pretty well. -
I was troubleshooting a problem I had with my Amazon Fire TV, where it was refusing to connect to an Aruba wireless access point at 5GHz. The problem turned out to be that the AP had A) put itself on a high DFS wifi channel B) set itself to use 80MHz channels Neither of which the FireTV liked. Setting the AP to 40MHz channels and excluding the DFS range of channels fixed that issue. Could be you’re having a similar issue?

Zoom has pretty thorough GPO templates available for it. See reference guide here: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/360039100051-Group-Policy-Options-for-the-Windows-Desktop-Client-and-Zoom-Rooms?mobile_site=true

Raspberry Pi 400 Personal Computer Kit
Norphy replied to Danp's topic in Raspberry Pi, Arduino & Other SBCs
I don’t think they have an answer to your specific question but Ars reviewed this computer recently https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2020/11/raspberry-pi-400-the-under-100-desktop-pc-you-didnt-know-you-needed/ -
I have little doubt that some enterprising soul will find a way to get a non-Apple operating system on them, but yes, the days of running Windows natively on a Mac are numbered. There will probably be a virtualisation platform at some point in the future that will run Windows, or possibly someone will find a way to run Windows on Arm on them but I would imagine that’s a way away.

If only that were true. They'd soon disappear. Sadly, one is only eligible for a Darwin award if one fails to reproduce -

What, exactly, do they think happens with a COVID test? How is putting a swab inside someone's mouth and rubbing it against their tonsils going to harm them? What a bunch of numbnuts. -
So what you’re saying is... People are morons, no matter what method of transportation they choose? Gotcha.

Cpl Jones comes to mind as well. They're both appropriate. Had to take my 4 year old son to get tested yesterday . The testing centre was in a car park for a recreation park in Hayes, Kent. There were maybe half a dozen cars in the car park but still loads of people milling about going to the park. You'd think that they'd be more careful to close the place off if it's going to be a COVID testing site. Oh well, isolating until we know the results, hopefully won't be afterwards. -
Draining the battery resets the BIOS? Whelp, that’s some quality engineering there boys...

Irrespective of storage medium, I would only use RAID6 in a backup server, where write performance doesn't matter and where storage space is paramount. If this server is a virtualisation host, use RAID 10. Storage performance will be much better and it will still be able to tolerate two disk failures.

and 1m long swimming noodles on their heads which rotate at 1000rpm, ensuring you never get within 2m of one another. -
I tried to like Disenchanted. I really did. However there's something about it which rubs me up the wrong way. I got about 10 episodes in, realised I didn't like it very much and stopped.

The protagonist and grandmother aren’t white Norwegians in this version. Therefore, the world has gone politically correctly mad AND SOMETHING MUST BE DONE!!!!oneoneoneeleven In case you can’t tell, I’m being sarcastic.

Disney+ possibly blacklisting us
Norphy replied to enjay's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Ok, so let’s see: The Netflix link talks about a very specific subset of films on its catalog. The CEFM quite clearly says “Pre-recorded Videos and DVDs. “ The National Theatre one talks about its own collection The ERA one allows you to style and play back recordings made from broadcast TV and video. None of those links say that you have the right to show content from the major streaming sites in the classroom, with the minor exception of the educational content part of Netflix. If I were to show ’Dont **** with cats[/url]’ in the classroom, I’d be in breach of the service’s TOS. -
Microsoft are now recommending the 64 bit version of Office for general use, with some exceptions https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/choose-between-the-64-bit-or-32-bit-version-of-office-2dee7807-8f95-4d0c-b5fe-6c6f49b8d261#:~:text=The%2064%2Dbit%20version%20might,that%20you%27re%20already%20using.

I don't use Classroom myself either, but it sounds like there must be an automated process syncing something like an MIS against Classroom.

I recently discovered that Disney+ has got almost all of the Simpsons episodes on there. I’ve been watching episodes from the first few seasons. They are as good as ever but there are three things which are annoying me: 1) They’ve cropped the original 4:3 picture to 16:9, so the top and bottom of the picture is cut off. 2) Whatever they’ve used to upscale the picture to 1080p and deinterlace it is friggin’ AWFUL. 3) The Disney+ app on the Amazon FireTV is incredibly annoying: slow, dropped frames and takes about 15 seconds to pause a video.

Certainly sounds like it! I've got into the habit of doing "wri mem" after making any series of changes now. I've lost one too many switch configurations to not saving and the switch rebooting.
