Am I letting the side down having a BT connection?
Norphy replied to nicholab's topic in General Chat
I don’t see why you’d be letting the side down. The vast majority of internet traffic in this country goes over OpenReach’s infrastructure even if you’re not paying BT directly, so who cares really? Only reason I’ve used Virgin here is because it’s the best value in terms of price/performance compared to what else is available here. If BT offered a better package here I’d have no hesitation in moving to them. -

(Hopefully Simple Question) LACP Switch To Switch on Flat Network?
Norphy replied to JRA's topic in Wired Networks
As long as both switches support LACP LAGs, then yes it’ll be fine. -
Any of these work? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/keyboard-shortcuts-for-international-characters-108fa0c1-fb8e-4aae-9db1-d60407d13c35 Or alternatively you could use the on-screen keyboard? https://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/type-accents-on-windows-10/

That advert implied that there are people who like Bounties. That can't be right. Surely not.

This is just awesome: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-59348823 If it wasn't on the wrong side of the country, I'd be there like a shot. And I want one of those dinosaurs. -
Got this in Sainsburys as it was the only small carton of whole milk they had in today: Putting aside the arguments for and against tetra packs for a minute, the ‘70% less plastic’ claim is believable but why put the plastic lid on it? I remember supermarket milk before they started using plastic bottles; they used tetra packs like this without the spouts and they worked quite well. Covent Garden still use them for soup. The spout seems unnecessary.

The NHS booster booking site is allowing bookings for 40-49 year olds as of this morning. I've managed to get a booking for Thursday afternoon. -

Coronavirus: General discussion (see opening post for rules)
Norphy replied to Dos_Box's topic in General Chat
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-59343987 Austria has introduced a full national lockdown for everyone and is making vaccines mandatory from February onwards. I wonder how many nations will follow with both of those? -
I've had it as part of Apple One for the past few months. It seems to work OK, but out of all the streaming services I've used (Netflix, Prime, Disney+, iPlayer and this) it has by far the worst interface and the least content. Still, For All Mankind was bloody good.

IME when you have ProSupport the phone is usually answered very quickly and the engineer on the other end of the line listens to you and just gets it done, especially when you get someone in the Irish call centre. I don't know what's going wrong with you today. Are you getting through to the technical reception?

In think that most of the time, they don’t do it on purpose, it’s the CMS trying to be too clever for its own good. I’ve seen Wordpress do it before.

What remote monitoring system of servers do you use?
Norphy replied to a topic in Windows Server 2019
I think it can monitor anything that can talk SNMP, so as long as you have a MIB for your printer and know what OIDs to monitor, you’re golden. -
There is a Plex app for the Fire TV platform. I have it on my Fire TV stick.

Wikipedia is wrong: https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2021/11/16/how-to-get-the-windows-10-november-2021-update/ That post from Microsoft says that 21H2 LTSC is being supported for five years. The IoT version is getting ten years. Interestingly, the blog post also says that future Windows 10 releases are going onto a yearly release cadence, like Windows 11. They will just be getting H2 releases from now on. /edit just looked at the Wikipedia article and the table you're referencing. It's badly labelled. There's a footnote which clarifies that the mainstream LTSC version is getting five years and the IoT version is getting ten.

Similarly, pressing CTRL-END or CTRL-HOME takes you to the beginning/end of the document, rather than the line. Holding down SHIFT while doing one of the above highlights the word/line/document.

Ubiquiti CCTV system fell over - Need solutions ASAP
Norphy replied to Warwick_Tech's topic in Physical Security
Hikvision camera hardware is reasonable, but unless you want to be completely in their ecosystem they might not be the best choice. Them and a lot of other Chinese camera manufacturers got kicked out of ONVIF alliance, a standards board for CCTV companies. If you want to use a third party VMS system like Milestone or Genetec they’re not the best choice because the VMS companies won’t support them as they can’t guarantee that they support the latest standards. In my experience, Hikvision software is diabolical so a third party recorder might be needed.
