Yet so many schools use it, including my son's previous school. I find that completely mystifying.

We're selling SIMS. Oh good, no-one can be worse than Capita Hold my beer... Hopefully, this legal action has some effect.

In theory, the advantage is that the TV supports apps and streaming services out of the box and you can watch your content without third party device attached to it. The drawbacks in practice, however, are quite severe. Unless you’re very lucky, the devices are either never updated or updates are few and infrequent. Considering how frequently Netflix et al update their apps on other platforms, that’s a massive drawback. That said, getting a TV with an inbuilt FireTV or Chromecast mitigates that issue, at least until the hardware becomes outdated. They have a habit of sending adverts to you and reporting back to base your viewing habits and other metrics. I’m sure a ChromeCast, a FireTV or a Roku would as well, but I find Google, Amazon and Roku to be marginally more trustworthy that some random manufacturer or even Samsung. In my opinion, if you can find a dumb screen, you’re better getting one and plugging in your streaming device into it. However, the challenge is actually finding one. It’s pretty rare to find one that isn’t these days, unless you get a large computer monitor but that comes with its own drawbacks.

The FTC aren't the only ones who are looking closely at this takeover. The NCSC is also raising concerns: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2021/11/uk-announces-national-security-probe-of-nvidias-54-billion-arm-deal/ I think a large part of the issue is, Softbank want rid of it to cover the costs of other investments that went sideways. I doubt they care too much who it goes to, and from a competition point of view, Nvidia are probably the worst company who could buy it.

I Don't Understand (and at this point I'm afraid to ask.) Profiles?
Norphy replied to JRA's topic in Windows 10
Folder redirection carries its own risks and drawbacks, especially on laptops which are taken away from the building. There are apps which don't work properly if AppData is redirection, modern Adobe stuff among them, and the MS Teams client can do funny things if AppData is redirected as well, if it's being used on more than one machine. I think the only folder I'd think about redirecting these days is possibly the home drive, and even these days with OneDrive being able to sync the Documents folder etc I'd think twice about it. If you're desperate for a roaming profiles style thing, U-EV is worth a look (It's similar to Roaming Profiles in that settings for apps are copied to a user share but it's done on a per-app basis and settings are only roamed if the app is run), Enterprise State Roaming with Azure or if you have an appropriate license, FSLogix where the user profile is stored in a container file which is attached on logon. -

Just came here to post the same story from the BBC. What a prat. The sad thing is, I'll bet there are people out there thinking "Hmm, what a good idea" -

As I've mentioned in another thread, I've just moved up to Scotland and from what I've seen they're taking the wearing of masks a lot more seriously up here. A trip to Tesco's yesterday and I'd say not more than one in 20 people didn't have a mask. -

Good. They should never have been made optional in the first place. -

I might be wrong, but I think that with desktop Outlook, a user’s signature is stored locally in Outlook rather than in the user’s Exchange account. I know that every time I’ve changed computers or used someone else’s I’ve had to redo my signature in Outlook

Am I letting the side down having a BT connection?
Norphy replied to nicholab's topic in General Chat
I've not had one for the past five years. We mostly use our mobiles, but I also have a VOIP line from Vonage which we use across our Virgin Media connection. At the time, getting it like that was cheaper than getting the combined phone/broadband package. -
It solves the issue when you're mapping a new printer queue and you get either 0x000006e4 or 0x00000709 error messages, a fault that was introduced with the October patch. If you're using Point and Print and installing printer drivers when you're mapping the queue, you still need to put in the AllowNonAdminsToInstallDrivers registry entry, or whatever it was called.

In preparation for my move up north to the middle of nowhere, I've ordered myself one of these: https://www.broadbandbuyer.com/products/37640-poynting-5g-xpol-a0002/ What I didn't realise is just how friggin' huge it is! Here is a picture of it with a 4G dongle attached: Oh well, hopefully it will help.
