  1. Try here Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin: Networking tips and tricks - SitePoint
  2. Its because the Ubuntu network manager runs as a user, you need to configure the wireless manually and remove the Ubuntu network manager.
  3. Well they managed to go from 97% marketshare of all operating systems in 2000 to 20% by 2012. So 2012 it wasn't really microsofts year! http://blog.seattletimes.nwsource.com/techtracks/IDC%3AGS.png Goldman Sachs: Microsoft has gone from 97 percent share of compute market to 20 percent | Microsoft Pri0 | The Seattle Times
  4. If you want to look into a larger scale managed deployment then look no further than here: Spacewalk: Free & Open Source Linux Systems Management We've been using it for several months now for 70+ centos machines and it works really nicely for imaging, locking down settings, installing new software, patching and running small scripts.
  5. I'm typing this on a £160 tablet with a Bluetooth keyboard. I'm not so sure that Windows 8 is really going to be required for this technology shift. And six weeks is really quite a long time to expect teachers to train to use something. I don't think they will see the benefit if they are using technology already. It just seems like a lot of headache for very little,if any, benefit.
  6. As others speculated this will likely help MS anyway. 2013 will be the year of the windows phone
  7. That is a much better analogy. In the same way that Google didn't have any control over adobe pulling flash support for Android, they don't have any control over how MS license EAS. ActiveSync is still usable on paid for google business services (and educational) you just don't get it for free on free accounts.
  8. its not the same, or everyone cares about silverlight?
  9. In the context of what I was saying, I'm using a lot of virtual machines and tend to treat windows as an application - or rather as middleware to run an application. The majority of applications we run in school can be used from a web browser and there are now only a small proportion of educational apps that don't run this way. Managing a lot of virtual desktops is quite simple, it saves money on hardware and allws non web based apps to run properly on low spec and PXE bootable hardware. It isn;t the best environment for everything - but if you can mitigate against malware and virus problems easily by rebooting the machine into a 'clean' state so continuing to use XP is still a viable option.
  10. odd thing to quote in the 'defense' of windows8 because it also says that tablets really haven't taken off in schools. six weeks ! and that's from micorsofts own research from early adopters. Not exactly an easy transition.
  11. The exchange protocols are still available for business (and education users) and you can't do that on gapps without a business or education account anyway. Its only really a problem for home Google users on windows phones and that phone has such a miniscule market share that hardly any ones going to be bothered unless they are trying to use the issue as an argument to bash google. Its akin to MS not supporting silver light on linux, and no one really cares about that.
  12. CalDav has been in iOS since 3.0 and carddav since ios4. source: CalDAV - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia CardDAV - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I'm not really sure what the fuss is about - like the OP said the advanced features are really only for business settings, remote wiping etc which Google apps does anyway. This isn't going to affect that many people at all - only the handful of windows phone users like yourself who only get the windows phone because of a love for MS aren't likely to be using googles services anyway.
  13. How do you know that? Perhaps MS massively raised the licensing costs for ActivSync, perhaps MS threatened to sue on a patent infringement. Like you say - Office 365 will get a boost because of this so it will likely play out in MS's favor. I don't see why you'd bash Google for not offering support for exchanges proprietary protocols when MS don't offer support for the caldav/carddav standards that virtually every other system uses? They could do it in conjunction with their proprietary stuff unless they were being childish too?
  14. Money and politics. I assume Google have to license active sync from MS. They just replaced a set of proprietary and licensed standards with open ones. (Nothing whatsoever to do with open source BTW). MS could easily implement IMAP,caldav, cardav if they wanted to and run it alongside exchange protocols - most other systems use other open standards so it would make sense to support it. I can't see why it would affect Google account to iPhone sync as apple supports and used the open protocols (I think they wrote some of it). it will be a bigger problem for ms users
  15. 16GB Nexus 7 is sold out too. https://play.google.com/store/devices/details?id=nexus_7_16gb&feature=nexus7_campaign
  16. If you already haven't got that far why did you rule out Google?
  17. I guess. live/365 is a bad choice for anything other than MS.
  18. Not at all - we use it here and it is very good. It is only that the OP is asking for OpenSource software to complement the Governments Open Source Policy. Paint.Net wouldn't fit the criteria.
  19. Google Apps for Education
  20. If they were ours we'd use the management console but we don't manage them at all because they are all user owned devices, they just login with their school account. Its one of the reasons why a google apps domain is a good idea - with windows you can just manage windows (and OSX at a push) with a google apps domain you get more flexibility as you can manage android, IOS and chromebooks and it all integrates with AD. But like @SYNACK says - you might be better off paying the higher price for W8 if you can't get the decent tools.
  21. yes, we have a few.
  22. Works on all five of my accounts Did you not try Settings -> add account -> corporate -> exchange ? I've been free of exchange for a few years now, so not sure how well that works.
  23. You could create another gmail account to import your exchange. or just go the whole way and run this: https://tools.google.com/dlpage/exchangemigration :-)
