Slashdot is reporting that Chromebooks are the top selling laptop (netbook) on Amazon right now. so you may have a point here.

well half the core operating system files, utilities and gui's on redhat are the same on Solaris, Ubuntu, BSD, HP-UX, AIX and OSX but they are not the same. Linux is a kernel - nothing more, nothing less. Saying Android 'isn't linux' is just stupid.

It would be interesting to see if this is quantifiable - say compared to spending £250k extra per year on getting better teachers. £250k would barely pay for 5 "excellent" teachers and wouldn't lower class sizes that much in a school of 1200. It would only cost £160k to provide them all with a nexus7 at a 50% breakage rate thats only £80k per year - or the cost of a deputy head. If the exam results, behavior and attendance really do improve then thats quite a good investment. But it does need to be quantified properly.

Sort of like saying windows 7 is not windows - although it shares parts of the same kernel as windows server it doesn't include many of the utilities....

All but the osx which is Unix. But yes huge number of systems run a Linux kernel. Windows has a majority of desktop PCs but is in a minority when it comes to computing devices. With regards to the usability issues and following a question I posted here on edugeek where the feedback was to stick to win7 , I discussed these issues with our senior leadership team at the end of the last term. I provided slt a couple of sample systems and detailed the issues. I gave the SLT a couple of basic things to do eg shut the machine down, launch sims, get to their H drive etc. We were told - in no uncertain terms - that were not to deploy win8 because there will be too many staff training issues. We devised a 5 yr plan based on win7 with some Linux PCs.

Android IS Linux. You need to add the android/linux figures together. I'd be quite surprised if the dell and Acer CEOs collectively said that they were selling crap and invoking the Ratner effect.

We use a published app over Citrix for SIMS. It works rather well on Chromebooks. Chromebooks work with proxyconfig so internet access isn't an issue.

The bandwidth for google apps is actually quite minimal. When we converted 2000 we were expecting a large rise in internet bandwidth but it only turned out to be around 5-10MB/s over what we used to see. Each 10Mb/s increase in bandwidth costs us £1000 so the google apps wasn't a real issue. Authentication is local and of course we have redundant internet links. You can also save Google apps stuff locally to a mapped drive and have that sync to the cloud using google drive if you wish.

I appreciate you are planning Single Sign On later, so when you roll it out to everyone you won't need to distribute passwords at all.

Disk I/O should be significantly faster than your network @1gb. A lot of it will be cached anyway so I doubt this will be too much of a problem.

Android phone, platform for computer science lessons
CyberNerd replied to NikChillin's topic in Hardware
The MIT Appinventor uses the android emulator. We use this but also allow the students to download the apps they create to their phones. MIT App Inventor -
lol. Rather than have two files - you create a symbolic link so that if one file is edited so is the other! example ln -s wpad.dat wpad.dat?
-
symbolic link them.

Lets hope they don't run the Merakai brand and products into the ground like they did Linksys.

Single Sign On ?

LDAP authentication to MRBS on linux
CyberNerd replied to prashant47's topic in Network and Classroom Management
the ldap host should be that of you domain controller, not the mrbs server. my working config: $auth["type"] = "ldap"; //# 'auth_ldap' configuration settings //# Where is the LDAP server $ldap_host = "192.168.0.5"; //# If you have a non-standard LDAP port, you can define it here $ldap_port = 389; //# If you want to use LDAP v3, change the following to true $ldap_v3 = true; //# If you want to use TLS, change following to true $ldap_tls = false; //# LDAP base distinguish name //# See AUTHENTICATION for details of how check against multiple base dn's $ldap_base_dn = "ou=staff,dc=example,dc=college,dc=internal"; $ldap_user_attrib = "uid"; // If you need to search the directory to find the user's DN to bind // with, set the following to the attribute that holds the user's // "username". In Microsoft AD directories this is "sAMAccountName" $ldap_dn_search_attrib = "sAMAccountName"; $ldap_dn_search_dn = "cn=LDAP,cn=Users,dc=example,dc=college,dc=internal"; $ldap_dn_search_password = "xxxx"; -
Google docs does even work with the legacy file formats. If you add the google apps plugin for MS Office - the files are instantly uploaded as binary files to Google apps when the file is changed in MSOffice. It is actually free for education - the same service that costs business £30 per user per year. Some quite large firms are using it now. Jurnalists at the guardian, who you might expect to be using traditional office apps, have been using Google apps for over three years

We have the same, also for about 5 yrs and it has been great. We'll likely upgrade to DS3512 next year.

I've not actually done this in Ubuntu, so i dont have any config details.but that was the general principal. I'm 99% sure @dhicks uses this method for connecting Debian "chrome books" though... Apologies if this was a rather slack answer but I've not got a Ubuntu box now.
