I voted "Yes" before the "guest SSID/VLAN" option was available. I don;t think a VLAN in itself is good enough for BYOD, it has to be firewalled from the other networks.

Should kids use iPads for textbooks in school?
CyberNerd replied to timbo343's topic in General Chat
39% of children read daily using an electronic device. IMO its crazy to stop children learning on devices that they are already comfortable using. Some really odd comments here considering this is primarily a forum for ITStaff in schools who don't seem to want IT in schools?!?!?! How can Microsoft compete with this licensing?
CyberNerd replied to bcsdtech's topic in Licensing Questions
This is *exactly* the problem we faced. Combined with the fact that we would have to pay even more for terminal services licenses because MS don't actually supply a version of office for the devices the kids own! The solution was fairly simple and even means we don't need to pay for EES! We moved the whole school to a mix of Google apps and libre office. We still have a few copies of ms office for certain tasks. The transition was relatively painless (some whining but very few legitimate problems). -
I'd use 10GbE SFP+ cables and put a 10GbE switch in the server rack , thats what we did anyway. Failing that I would use rapidnet. RapidNet HellermannTyton RapidNet Category 6 Short Link Sets

Flash isn't supported on the Nexus 7 so perhaps its related to that. Try installing the Youtube app once the port is opened. -

[sims] SIMS - best way to produce video or help sheets for teachers
CyberNerd replied to number34's topic in MIS Systems
99/100 teachers won't bother reading or watching it. You'd be better off using the documentation from Capita. -
I'll recommend axis cameras. We use them with Zoneminder (free). Just requires a server and cameras. Very cost effective solution compared to off the shelf setups if you're willing to invest some time setting it up.

Could also be that their pipe to the internet is contended with other schools, so whilst you're paying for 100Mb you only see half that.
-
I just install it on the client machines and point the google drive to the network share. The teachers need to log in to their google drive after they logged into the computer.

should be a one liner with bash find c:\home\username\mail\ "*.pst" -exec rsync -R {} c:\wherever ;\ -exec setfacl -R -m user:username:rwx c:\wherever\{} ;\ not sure if the setfacl will work with cygwin as this is a unix to windows translation.

we just put in a simple linux virtual machine for relaying internal email to gmail - a lot simpler to look after than a full blown exchange server. It might be an option for you. Otherwise, the internet says you can do it on exchange like this: PeteNetLive - KB0000542 - Allow a Server to "Relay" Through Microsoft Exchange

An Open Letter to Mr Gove about Teaching Assistants
CyberNerd replied to sonofsanta's topic in General Chat
I completely disagree! The sweeping statements are totally well informed and history is Mr Gove's adviser! In the late 19th century we didn't have teaching assistants, coursework or local authorities and the country was great! We need this country to be great again and the way to do this is to make sure that the privileged kids get a good private education and that the poorer ones can be servants and navvies. People need to know their place! Students should think themselves lucky that we're not getting corporal punishment back which is what Gove would really be after if it wasn't for those pesky lib dems! /sarcasm -
[ipad] Help me, please drag me from this pit of despair
CyberNerd replied to mrbios's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
don't worry about them - they use tcp/ip too Papercut has some good options here: webprint works for us. We just put appletv devices into the same subnet as the wireless devices (stafff wi-fi) works for us. Google drive is the key. Sync the desktop files to google drive, install the app and hey presto. THis is for staff though. I can't see a way of them being multiuser. yeah. An apple server can install them I think (colleague did that work so I'm not sure). Ultimately its departmental problem as far as I'm concerned. So all in all ipads have worked out fine for us with very few issues. We only gave them to 8 PE staff so it wasn't quite as epic as your dilema and I already stated to HT that we'd be happy to give students ipads - but they'd not be able to share them - one student -one device -
Setup centralised authentication (Linux & Windows)

In that case: Install MythTV MythTV, Open Source DVR Install MythWeb MythWeb - MythTV Official Wiki Install Mythtranscode Mythtranscode - MythTV Official Wiki Install MythTranscode Moodle Plugin https://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=mod_mythtranscode Buy An ERA+ license. At that point you've got a TV recording service - users loginto mythweb and schedule TV programs to be recorded, then students can play them back on their iphones etc on Moodle. The bit I'm not sure about is how to upload and catalogue your old collection. I think you'll need to upload them to mythTV then get mythtranscode to encode them to a suitable format for VLE playback. Let me know if you get this done as I'd like to do that bit here as well. right now we just tell staff to upload it to Google or Youtube.
-
For TV recordings we use MythTV and have a link into our VLE so that staff play TV shows on a browser through Moodle. I'm sure MythTV could be extended to add pre-saved files. The issue you'll have is with cataloging them.

Active Directory works. Either the MS version or Samba4.
