  1. If anyone is in the market for a new USB drive, then Lidl got these in yesterday - https://www.lidl.co.uk/p/intenso-ultra-line-super-speed-usb-a-usb-stick-256gb/p10010498 And you get an extra 15% off if you have the Lidl app.
  2. Boy's Life is highly recommended. It won tons of awards back in the day and not the kind of story you might think it is. Childhood (with all it's ups and downs) as it should have been. Apart from the murder mystery! Blue World was his collection of short stories. Pin is one story in there that has stuck in my mind. I won't describe it here!
  3. His book Boys Life is possibly my favorite book of all time. I also enjoyed Stinger. Apparently he stopped because of a fall out with a new editor. I tried to read his book The Queen of Bedlam, but really couldn't get into it. Speaks The Nightbird is rather good though, but it does seem that he's better sticking with horror or slighty quirky books though.
  4. Oh frabulous day! One of my favorite books, Robert R McCammon's Swan Song is to be made into a TV series - https://m.imdb.com/news/ni64413172/?ref_=tt_nwr_1 I really hope this works out as the book is amazing (think The Stand but much, much better). The book has been out of print for some time now and used copies of the original go for quite a bit. Hopefully they will do it justice
  5. I had a chat with more than a few sponsors and exhibitors there, and all were rolling their eyes whenever thay saw 'AI' included in the promotion of even the most trivial of products. I suppose it's easier to type than 'machine learning'. Sadly I was only at the show for a day really, but did notice that the stands were almost all smaller and I didn't see the talks that many stands have areas set aside for taking place. Perhaps they had all moved to the break-out sessions. It was very nice to see so many of you in the real again when you came to visit the stand though, and my introduction to vegan pizza was...well, 'um'.
  6. You may have hit on something there. With 80%+ of English high schools now in academy groups (there are 1170 of these now!), I wonder if they are not paying attention to outlying details, especially once they are cut off from LEA control and all of the infrastructure and support they offer.
  7. Paging @ICTDirect_Dave. He's currently at BETT setting up today, but hopefully can give you some advice soon.
  8. Does that make for the most tedious game of Pong ever?
  9. I wouldn't be too sure about that. Just wait until people get into retro-networking! ETA: There are stil a lot of legacy systems out there, and much information from way back is still helpful to many as not much has changed in some sub-systems.
  10. Moving to the Server 2022 Forum.
  11. Don't be afraid of coming to visit the stand for pizza, we love to meet you all in the real world, and this is one of the few chances per year we get to do so. And as Dave said, we have an arcade cab on the stand this year (which you can win for your organisation) and a comfy sofa and seats to rest your weary legs!
  12. Wait until the avalance of spam arrives!
  13. You can view the page at https://edugeek.me/article/729
  14. Took my son to see The Boy And The Heron last week at the IMAX in the Printworks in Manchester. What a cracking film and nice to Miyazaki on top of his game still
  15. My kids never had The Gruffalo, but loved Room On The Broom. By far their fave was The Wolves In The Wall by Neil Gainman though.
  16. One of my big regrets was not buying up loads of old home computers in the early 2000's before the retro-gaming scene pushed up prices. I do have a nice collection of Sinclair machines though
  17. Love the wood ants pic!
  18. At the beginning of the trailer I kept thinking of The Shoveller from Mystery Men for some reason!
  19. Me too, although it does mean I'll have to sign up for Netflix again!
  20. This is quite a good thread, especially as this is the very thing Ive been giving thought to recently. As a Gamer V1.0 I have found that (apart from the recycling of old gaming themes) online play is just too annoying. I'm in my 50's and compared to teen reactions, mine just have whatever avatar I have in game with a huge 'shoot me first' glowing sign above my head. And they do. I'm wondering if there are any gaming studios out there that pay attention to playability and not needing to have every key on the keyboard in use for an in-game function, or the reflexes of and F1 driver. In particular for people like many of us (Gamer v1.0's), I don't want to spend the best part of a month leaning just to control a playable character\vehicle\ship. There has to be a market for that!
  21. A very good point, I shall amend now.
  22. I think they are largely hamstrung by the x86/x64 architecture, ARM will be like a fresh start I think. I'm also looking forward to more competition in the market. I do have to wonder though whether these chips will be available as stand-alone items or built into motherboards.
  23. I think it’s about time that we had this discussion, what with both AMD and Nvidia saying they will have desktop ARM processors available from next year - https://www.theverge.com/2023/10/23/23929240/nvidia-amd-cpu-arm-pc-chips-2025-release-rumors - and this will have a BIG impact on IT in every environment. These chips will do a lot for the general world of IT, not just in that no longer will we have a binary choice between which desktop CPU manufacturer we can choose between, but also the extra processing power and lower power consumption that they come with could make quite a saving for school power bills. All of this, of course, will depend on the price that CPU companies have at launch, and that Windows for ARM is stable and supports the apps we use daily. Microsoft does say that this won’t be an issue though - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/arm/apps-on-arm-x86-emulation - but I think that we’ve all been there before! Will you be diving in straight away, or waiting a year or so to see what, if any, issues come up? Let us know below, or if you have any other questions about ARM in the classroom, then feel free to post it up and hopefully someone will be able to provide an answer 😊
  24. He must have been in a zen-like state to do that. And 13 year old reactions help too!
  25. He'll also be humming the tune until he's 45
