Thanks Joanne. The ThinkCentre is a PC so I meant the BIOS battery; that didn't make any difference. I'll try to find out if I can reset the BIOS using jumpers.

I have a ThinkCentre M71z and I'm getting an "Error 0199: System Security - Security password retry count exceeded on last boot" message at power on / restart. Entering BIOS also requires a password. I can cancel at that point but can't change anything in BIOS. At the error message I can press F2 to resume but then need a System Power ON Password. I believe the workstation has been OK until now and my colleagues are unaware of any passwords; I'm new to the job. I am wondering if a student has set the passwords somehow. I've tried removing the battery for 30 minutes with no effect. Any suggestions are welcomed.

Getting the following error when accessing Exchange mailbox via OWA on a MacBook. The Mac is running Outlook 11. action you tried to perform couldn't be completed because there is a configuration problem on the server. Access via OWA is OK on a PC running Outlook 2010. Any thoughts, please?

Hi, Outlook 11 (on a Mac, obviously?) was reporting no connection to exchange. I followed some instructions to delete the account and set it up again. I've added the appropriate info and set it to configure automatically but it doesn't detect the exchange server. I add the server name in but nothing happens, no connection or otherwise is indicated. I've tried with both ssl on and off. I've reset the password and tried again. Not much info I know but any ideas? Paul.

Thanks so much for your help. I've realised I can add the driver to a new driver group so hope that will help; both drivers will still be on wds.

I'm trying to create a desktop icon for an application called Pivot Animator. I've installed the app to a shared location and have created a gpo which points to the exe. I've attached a screenshot of how I've set it up. I checked using gpresult and it seems to apply. I also checked using iconexplorer and I think the icon index = 0 should work. I have another similarly created shortcut gpo for another application which looks the same and works fine. Any thoughts gratefully received. Regards, Paul.

Hi, So I've found the following entry in compatible ids in the details tab for the driver on the laptop I was concerned about. ven_10ec&dev_8136&rev_07. That appears as an entry in the rt64win7 inf file %RTL8136.DeviceDesc% = RTL8105.ndi, PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8136&REV_06 so I am guessing the driver is compatible. Would you agree? We have several c1765nfw printers which have been deployed via GPO from Print Management. They have, essentially, stopped working. The drivers are being deployed to 32 bit machines from a 64 bit 2008 R2 server but both 32 bit and 64 bit drivers are installed and available. If we install the drivers locally to machines the printer is OK. I've checked the drivers on the server are OK. I have installed the latest drivers, which appear to be the same version, but printing fails even from the server. I know there's not a lot to go on here but any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Regards, Paul.

Hi, At school 1 I have version 7.48 of the rt64win7 Realtek LAN drivers added to a boot image on WDS. I can deploy images to Toshiba Satellite Pro C50 laptops but they don't work with the Sat Pro R50-B laptop; although the laptop PXE boots OK it fails when the install process starts. At school 2 I have version 7.65 of the same driver added to the boot image and that does work with the R50. Does anybody know if I add version 7.65 to WDS at school 1 will it be backwardly compatible? Will I continue to be able to deploy images to the C50 as well as the R50? Thanks, Paul.

Can I replace the "username" part of the path with a wildcard? I'm guessing not. Even if I write a script I'd need to include each user's path separately, right?

A teacher wishes to add a file or files to all pupils' work folders. Is there an easy way to do this? I have heard Robocopy can do so but can't quite work out the syntax for this sort of job. The location of individual folders is \\server\home\students\username\My Documents. Some of the folders appear to replace "username" with My Documents but I imagine a wildcard for that part of the pathway, if possible,would get around that. A teacher wants to be able to assess some pieces of pupils' work but the files are obviously stored in individual work folders on a file server. Does anyone have a method for overcoming this situation? She has suggested naming such pieces of work with the same name within each user's folder and searching for the files with that name and I can obviously give her access to the home folder which contains the pupils' work folders. Thanks. I'll give that a go. I've just deployed the image after deleting the ADUC computer account and a new computer name was generated, as per the format I have specified in WDS. Of course, I'll need to delete that new account if I want to use that laptop to deploy the image to another HDD. Might this (not sysprepping) explain why the NB10 laptops can't identify / install drivers for an external drive (with drivers etc on it) after I've moved the HDD? I've had to remove the drive again to copy drivers onto it so I can install the network card.

Thanks for posting. We use PXE boot ... I'm CSM booting because I understood that UEFI will not work with Windows 7 deployment ... we don't have Server 2012 on this network currently. Not sure what MDT is. I'm essentially following some instructions put together by a colleague; I can follow some of it but can't tweak things very much without advice. It sounds as though there might be a better / alternative method. I was thinking the other day we will probably need another method if /when we begin deploying Windows 8.

Thanks for the reply. That might be the issue. I'm using WDS. I probably need to explain in a little more detail what I'm attempting. I tried to deploy an image to some Toshiba Satellite Pro NB10-A laptops but they will not let me PXE boot even if I flash the BIOS to allow access to the disable secure boot and select CSM boot options. I decided to deploy the image to the NB10 HDDs by putting the drives into some Tosh Sat Pro C50-A laptops - these laptops had already had the same image deployed to them. The image deploys OK but the computer name stays the same. The laptops also appear on the domain even if I tell WDS not to allow that. Deleting the original C50 computer accounts from AD might be the answer but the problem with doing so is that the original C50 laptops will also need re-imaging when I'm done with the NB10 drives; I guess that won't be too much of an issue, comparatively - I've done the drives in batches using only five C50 laptops so only need to redeploy to those five C50s. Does that sound like it makes sense? DO you think the image will deploy correctly if I delete the AD account; ie with a new computer name / onto the domain if I select that option? Paul.

I'm deploying an image but the computers are keeping their original computer names. I have tried setting the naming policy and even stopping the computer from being added to the domain (which doesn't work either; it still is added to the domain). Not using any specific answer files and keeping things very simple. Anyone any ideas? Thanks, Paul.

Also having a problem booting from the LAN on the NB10-A. I've flashed the BIOS to v1.40 and have disabled secure boot then selected CSM but I am still seeing an error when booting into LAN; "Reboot and Select proper Boot device - or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key". I'd be very grateful if anyone can suggest anything; we have 15 of these to image. Paul.

Hi all, hope someone can help me. I have a VMWare host with three virtual servers. One we call the DC, running Server 2012 and AD, GP Management, DNS and DHCP, the other two are Server 2008 R2 and run SIMS and Exchange. The Exchange server was originally a single physical server running all three of the roles now being performed by individual servers so it was a DC; we P-to-V'd the original and we created a new DC and made it the primary DC leaving the Exchange server as a secondary DC, with AD, DNS but not DHCP. It's this new DC that keeps apparently falling off the network. Every other morning or so I need to reboot the machine via VSphere. As soon as it is rebooted users can log in to the network. I would have thought the secondary DC would jump in if the primary was not available but don't have any idea how that process is instigated or set up. In addition to these issues I don't think things are replicating; there are policy files which are not the same in my sysvol folders. I can't see anything obvious in the event logs on the primary DC except a multitude of group policy errors that all refer to the same policy file, which I believe is for IE 10+ settings and which is a file that appears on the secondary DC but not the primary DC. The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows attempted to read the file \\\SysVol\\Policies\{0337B1C4-CA85-4BF8-88B2-1A073A0C2059}\gpt.ini from a domain controller and was not successful. Group Policy settings may not be applied until this event is resolved. This issue may be transient and could be caused by one or more of the following: a) Name Resolution/Network Connectivity to the current domain controller. b) File Replication Service Latency (a file created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller). c) The Distributed File System (DFS) client has been disabled. The other two VMs seem OK and they all use a single physical NIC so I'm not tempted to think it's anything to do with the hardware or host. This may not be much to go on in terms of someone being able to help me out but any suggestions would be very welcome. Paul.

I'm experiencing some issues with wallpapers on Windows 7 clients on Server 2008 domains. At one school I am seeing different wallpapers for different users of the same type (ie pupils) and I'm not sure why that would be. Someone suggested to me that it is because the user profile takes the wallpaper of the first machine the user logs into; ie if the user, for some reason, logs into the Server then it takes the server wallpaper as its own. Some users have Windows 7 wallpaper, some have black backgrounds. At another school I'm seeing a different wallpaper for the same user on different machines; on one I see the Windows 7 blue wallpaper, on another I see a completely black wallpaper. I guess it's not a huge deal but I'm a little concerned that this is a symptom of something else I need to be worried about. Is there an easy group policy method of forcing the wallpaper to something specific; ie the Windows 7 wallpaper? Thanks, Paul.
