Quackers

Seems to me Windows 7 is still just as dire as Windows Vista is, put with a bit of polish squirted on. Here is a link to a Video of 2 identical netbooks. Clicky to view (Might want to right click save instead) Both are clean machines, built fresh, nothing installed yet accept drivers, so no antivirus to be blamed. First PC, Windows XP, Shared area on a Windows Server 2003 loads. Fast, usable. Next it goes to Windows 7, i got so bored of waiting for it to load i stopped the video. This is the exact same problem we had with Windows Vista, anybody else get this issue? I doubt the problem is anything but Windows Vista/7 as Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server seem capable of loading this and other network shares fine. Why can Vista/7 not do simple tasks? Any ideas on a fix? Its not just these netbooks that do it, its ANY computer that has either Vista or Windows 7 on.

Also look at the costs. RM Connect is not a cheap product, and depending on how many stations you have Vanilla could be a lot cheaper. Also when you add on the fact Vanilla will run better on the lower end machines savings could also come from not having to spend money on hardware upgrades.

I've created a quiz in hot potatoes, and if you answer a question wrong, it says sorry try again instead of going to the next question. Am i being blind as i cannot find an option anywhere to make it just mark it as wrong and go to next question....

If anyone is after an inexpensive solution for the real time reporting to parents, have a look at Insight from Tasc software, costs us £500 a year and looks the best of the ones i have seen yet. We have the Sims Learning Gateway but only teachers and students use that, Insight is much better than what SIMS offers via SLG for parents.

I'm sure most of us will do the right thing anyway and pay £30 for a Windows Upgrade licence and install Windows XP.

I agree 7 is better, but only in the way of it being a polished Vista, its still to Vistarish for me. I hate it making every last file icon a preview of the document, i could identify documents very quickly by its icon and name, now i cannot. Turning this off does not help, as now the one type of files i want to preview pictures no longer do :mad XP does this perfectly. I hate this "My Downloads", "My Contacts", "My Searchs" "My Saved Games", and the whole user profile redesign, more useless stuff to redirect causing more headaches. Windows XP/2000/NT4 had User profiles right... I hate the new address box/bar you get in Windows Explorer at the top, i prefer it to be in "C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop" for example not this "SOMTHING>SOMTHING>SOMTHING" I hate the way the icons are designed so big by default they can be seen from space. I hate these new control panel applets, big bulky cluttered things , such as the System one. XP had it right. Its more effort to get the say the Join a computer to a domain screen I hate the new Wireless Networking menu's. In XP it was simple and efficent, now i get frustrated and wound up just trying to add a wireless network, it should not be so dam hard. Why can i not just double click the wireless icon in the system tray and straght away see the wireless networks like in XP? Those are just a few of my many hates for Vista, and 7 has not fixed or solved any of them.

If Windows 7 RC1 is anything to go by, it can go where Windows Vista does, in the bin, and install Windows XP. 7 to be feels just as a pain to use as Vista and gives me the same headache just navigating files. Its a slow, akward, cluttered, painfull process. They need to "de clutter" Windows Explorer, Windows 3.1 was easier to navigate!!!!!

Yes we are using it, some staff use it, just 1 click from the Intranet to load pars, some users use the full client.

We run PARS, i would not do it, biggest reason being TASC Provide the best support i have ever seen from a company so far. Also PARS loads quicker than SIMS, you have PARS Connect offering a web browser based version, so nothing need be installed on the client, which is handy. Suppose they both take registers, just PARS looks and feels better put togeather, IMO its a better product, and our staff like it.

Can we have a party at your house if you get one, its one of the few times i would KILL to be a Beta tester with this technology, it sent shivers down my spine when she passed a real peice of paper to a virtual charactor and it went virtual...

Nobody talking Microsoft Natal???????????? It had me blown away watching E3

The increase in brain tumors IMO is from the increase in Aspartamne in more and more food/drink we digest ie all this nasty "diet" food and drink, as well as it creaping into some normal version of the products now, not Wifi and mobiles. Non industry funded studies has shown to cause brain tumors, and if you go and ask your science department what they teach in regards to artificial sweetners at biology school.....

I currently have a Cisco 800 as my home ADSL router, but i need to replace it, BUT i'm struggling to find a normal everyday router that will do what i do with my Cisco 800. What i need it to do is, my broadband providor gives me 8 static public IP's (Zen). Currently i have the DHCP leased PC's/Phones/etc going through 1 of the public IP's and i have 5 static IP's i can assign to make a machine public. Anybody know of a everyday router that allows you to do this? Most only have 1 tick box for DMZ, not allowing you to assign many to be public..... or if they allow you to that you cannot have 1 Public address for internet access for any machine that gets a DHCP assigned address...

The Asus Eee 1000H Netbook has the same Battery life, has B/G and N Wireless not just B/G and has this weird 1024&768 emulation mode, where it misses a few lines out to get the resolution, i've got both NC10's and Eee 1000H PC's and the only thing the samsung has over the Asus Eee PC is the mouse pad is better. Where as the Eee PC can do this weird 1024*768, has N Capable Wireless , and can be bought for around £240 without VAT.

We are giving every student it KS4 a Netbook connected to schools system from September onwards. Everyone is in support of the Idea, Students, Teachers..... Has any other school done this either with Netbooks or Notebooks? Their are a few logisitical issues we have as yet to decide on, one being can they take them home. I would prefer them to, but one or two people are conserned that once it gets out in the community that they have them, they then become a target for being mugged. Just interested in hearing from schools who have done this......

I'll stick to the Eee PC 1000H, the more i read and see these Dell ones the more i think they are so not thought out. Like AngryTechnician says, the screen res is just wrong, is it to hard to do that extra 24 pixels and get the 1024*600 ? or even better do somthing like an 11" screen and get a good res such as 1024*768 coupled with the low power consumption of the Atom Processor and other items and your on to a winner. With the public pricing too, when you make it actually suitable i.e. put the 6 Cell battery in, add the N capable wireless card the price rockets. Sorry Dell, you've lost your marbels with this product, its dire.

What is that price??

I have not eaten from our school for a few years, its disgusting, over priced, and size of meals are small. I either go to local sandwich shop, chipshop or supermarket. In september they went to these set meals which made things even worse. Then you have the person in charge of catering for schools in Staffordshire having the cheek to say their meals are good. Will be better if the school got rid of the County Catering service and went back to "cook in house" like it was about 10 years ago. They sacked you ? Did you not do as they asked? or did they just sack everyone ? Maybe we should all apply all 10,000 memebers (or how ever many) and overload them with paperwork....

Are there any other companies offering online testing for Lit/Num other than Edexcel's poor Prommisor ? I've been pulling my hair out with this peice of junk ever since they got rid of the Wonderful Exambase. Now were doing tests again, and it keeps dropping off candidates bookings now and again, support say they have been aware of the problem for 8 months but cannot seem to solve it.

Have any of your who have gone to VoIP got a Payphone at school? Were in the installing phase, and i bought a LinkSYS PAP2T Converter box so i can connect our BT Coutour 50 Payphone up. I get no dial tone. Same converter works fine with other phones, i'm pulling my hair out with it. So any ideas on either what to change on the Linksys box, or a VoIP Payphone? I am struggling to find one.

i do not get all these news ariticals on microsoft allowing you to downgrade to xp. Microsoft have always allowed you to run earlier versions of windows. You can downgrade windows 7 to windows 3.1 if you really want.
