  1. DMZ is still best practice, but does your firewall have Intrusion Prevention System (IPS)? IPS will be more helpful , these are the attacks for our site just this afternoon. Our firewall spotted them and blacklisted their IPs. It looks for PHP, Joomla, RDP, SSH and over 5000 other attack types. If you don't have IPS and have a few internet facing services i would get one.
  2. Our 3 domain controllers will hit 10 years old this year. Still working fine.
  3. in 2004?! I had just moved from CC2.4/Win98 to Vanilla XP. Well at least WfWg 3.11 had no WiFi issues
  4. My mistake , i just remember back in 2004 when i put WiFi in the school that the machines with Intel Wireless cards could not see channel 12 and 13 unless i changed country code, and others could not see it at all, so just avoided 12 and 13 ever since.
  5. 1-6-11 as 12 and 13 are not for use in the UK, and a lot of network cards won't see those channels on devices with a UK location as the driver says no.
  6. I would say 7 because its still supported, but i do understand that XP will run much better on them, and more than likely actually make them usable. If you were to go down the XP route i would make sure you don't use Internet Explorer, also use Windows Steady State so they go back to clean when rebooted if you use disk protection. Also if possible VLAN them off from the rest of your network so if they do get a nasty worm its only place out is back on the internet.
  7. Well i've just logged into my Apple Developer account and there is a beta of OS X Server 5.1 with the following notes. So guessing the other MDMs will start to have these options soon. What’s New In OS X Server 5.1 • Support for new Education features in iOS 9.3 Profile Manager • Support for Shared iPad - Configure Shared iPad - Some settings can be applied to specific users on a Shared iPad: Home Screen Layout, Notifications, Restrictions and Safari AutoFill - New commands: Force User Logout, Enable/Disable Lost Mode, Get Device Location • Support for Classroom - Create classes - Configure Classroom • New payloads (supervised only): Notifications; Lock Screen Message • New Restrictions (supervised only): Allow Apple Music; Allow Radio; Allow Notifications Modification; Apps Shown on Home Screen • New Restrictions: Allow iCloud Photo Library
  8. Over the last 3 years i have got my Mum, Dad, Aunt, Nan, Sister an iPad as presents for either Birthday or Christmas , and most of the remaining famley have one now too. For some reason i don't need to be tech support anymore, my weekends and evenings are mine again. No reinstalling Windows on Saturdays, no removing malware on Tuesday evenings. I'm happy, they are happy everybody wins.
  9. I hope this on screen testing is web based with no flash , no silver light , no other weird plugin and works across many platforms and browsers i.e. iPads, Android Tablets, OS X, Linux and Windows. If not thats when i will be annoyed
  10. I would expect so, we get PARS support direct from TASC Software.
  11. Hoping somebody else has had this and knows of a fix, as i really don't want to phone Microsoft support. New user created on local Active Directory. New user appears on the Office 365 admin portal, is enabled, and licensed correctly. User cannot login to any Office 365 services or login.microsoft.com says username/password is wrong. If i use the same login details locally to login to our domain user works fine. I have tried resetting the password and it makes no difference. Anybody else ever had this?
  12. You could also go to an Apple Store Genius Bar and explain the situation, they might choose to 'Surprise and Delight' with the other company going under, worst case you get a price for fixing if its hardware related. They did Surprise and Delight on me a few years ago, spent £1000 on a brand new Macbook Air 2012, about 3 weeks later i spilt a pint of water over it by accident. It was screwed, booked an appointment , played dumb, and they fixed it for free. They said they found slight water damage, but since i had only had it 3 weeks they waved all charges. Was nice seeing the invoice with a breakdown of parts and cost then £0.00 at the bottom.
  13. Yeah I like them, the sun always shines on tv is my favourite , followed by Manhattan skyline and train of thought
  14. Fortigate 200D would handle that a breeze. You would be looking around £5000/£6000 for that UTM, and then around £1800 a year for the filtering updates and support. I would not give up my Fortigate for anything. FortiGuard.com | Home is their threat centre which is worth a look. You can see all the standard category filters you can choose too.
  15. I hate the Control Panel/Settings in Windows 10, its horrible. I hated the Category view that XP introduced but at least in XP, Vista and 7 you could put it into Classic view so it looked like Windows 2000's Control Panel. No idea about 8 as i completely ignored that version after the time i spent 10 minutes looking for the shutdown button and ended up loading command prompt and typing shutdown. . Windows has just been a big mess for the last 3 versions. 8/8.1 and 10 and i don't see it getting any better.
  16. We have been 100% Mac clients side for 2 years. I did run 100% Windows for my first 11 years here. I can tell you the Mac setup is my preference now. Whilst they might cost more initially, they cost less to run over time and have more residual value. Our old IT Suite PC's were running at 110W each average, our iMacs run at 33W. So 77w per machine per hour less in electricity. Which when you multiply that by 90 machines is 7kW or £0.70p an hour. (bursar says without VAT we pay roughly 10p a kWh We also because they are so low watt don't run the 3 Aircon units we have as the rooms no longer get hot enough. They ran at around 3.5Kw each, so thats 11.5kw saved an hour or £1.10. So now we are up to £1.80 an hour less to run the Mac's or £12.60ish a day. £63 a week, £2331 a year (37 weeks), or of the 5 year span we want for them close to £12,000 less in electricity compared to running the old computers. Also after 5 years we could sell them and get hundreds per iMac back. Today a 5 year old used 21.5" iMac goes for between £300 & £400, our old IT Suite machines after were worth sweet FA. Vandalism to the IT Suite in 2 years has been ZERO. So we have not wasted man hours sorting that out, the kids really look after the Mac's. With the iMacs being so slim its has free'd up lots of desk space so the IT Suite rooms when not timetabled can be used very easy for an non IT lesson without they computers being in the way. OS X has been also less troublesome for us. Was it trouble free at the beginning? Nope, as i had come from over a decade of managing Windows so had a steep learning curve. I love the fact that in the last 2 years we have had zero malware/virus instances. Then in the class room each teacher having a Macbook (and iPad) Airplaying to the projector has given them the freedom to move around the room and rearrange the room how the teacher wants, not where IT has put the network sockets. This has meant some teachers moving their desk to the back of the room so the kids cannot see the teachers face when working so they don't know where the teacher is looking improving classroom behaviour, also declutters the teachers desk from big bulky desktops, and of course the power savings again. The battery life of the MacBooks is all the working day, they are light weight, half decent screen res compared to the previous junk, and even the staff who could never use trackpads before and had to have a traditional mouse have no issue using the trackpads on the Macs. Staff also update the Mac OS X them selves, install software them selves from the App Store so a lot more self managed which is good for us. Almost all staff have bought cases/protective covers for the Macs using their own money!! NEVER before have they done this, so they are respecting and appreciate the equipment a lot more. We recently had a Macbook Air stolen at an open evening, but within 45 minutes we had another one in the staff members hands with all the documents and settings on exactly as it was at 5:00pm the evening it was nicked, even had the programs they had open reopen when they logged in, Time Machine is just great, try doing that on Windows! Students in KS4 (our Year 9,10 & 11) have 1:1 iPads. The Apple world is VERY different to the Microsoft world. Facebook have over £13,000 Mac's deployed, Google 42,000 Mac's deployed and IBM is now moving over 2000 employees a week to the Mac as in now up to 30,000 of them hoping to be close to 200,000 deployed over 3 years. So some of the biggest names in the Tech industry have now moved away from Windows. I could have listed loads more things moving to the Apple eco system has opened up, but its more to point out there is more to it than this PC costs £X and this Mac costs £X.
  17. Download wineskin and create a 2D design package. 2D design works fine under wine.
  18. I'm going PS4 this time for Christmas I have the Original Xbox and an Xbox 360 , the main game I want it for hitman world of assignation has extra content on the ps4, plus when Microsoft came on stage and announced the Xbox one with tv, tv, tv, tv, tv, tv, tv, tv, tv it kind of put me off the Xbox as it felt like they don't get why I get a games console, hint, it's not to watch tv.
  19. Selective Sync, and on the Windows side Group Policies to control certain things.
  20. Anybody managed to get the new Sync client MS talks about (both for Windows and OS X), signed up a few days ago and still waiting... https://preview.onedrive.com/sync desperate for the new Mac Client as the previous beta was not great and last updated in January 2015.
  21. Both the Head and Assistant Head have £1600 Macbook Pro's. Everybody else in the school has the Macbook Air.
  22. My close friend works in the oil industry and use to work for Shell (geologist) he said supermarkets get their lower grade fuel.
  23. Does anybody have Veeam using the newer subscription option? We use the Veeam free version and would like to use the full version. I asked for a quote and got 3 different things back and don't understand what they cover. Veeam Backup & Replication Enterprise Plus Subscription License for VMware 1 Year Subscription License & Premium Support - Education Sector Veeam Backup & Replication Standard Subscription License for VMware 1 Year Subscription License & Premium Support - Education Sector Veeam Backup & Replication Enterprise Subscription License for VMware 1 Year Subscription License & Premium Support - Education Sector Whats the difference between these? and does the subscription cover an unlimited amount of HyperV Servers? (They have quoted for VMWare when we want HyperV but I'm sure that will not change the price too much if at all) We just have 9 physical servers as HyperV hosts, and 1 box with 36TB's on that we want all the backups to go to and the jobs to be run from. Just wondering what others have paid for Veeam.
  24. Im guessing its slow because the ~/Library folder is on a network share, and all these applications will be writing and reading lots of things to it. We force local home folders and then create symbolic links for the documents folder as a login script as to avoid this kind of performance issue. This thread might help http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mac/155273-shared-windows-mac-networks-what-others-doing.html LSDWho posts a link that may be of help.
  25. If your current one is almost 5 years old and you want another 4 years out of it and it will be on 24/7 i would get a new one in place now. They are not super expensive. You could always use the 2011 Mac Mini as a dedicated caching server if you have iPads.
