Our Mac Mini running OS X Server which has Profile Manager on for managing the Mac's, Caching Server, Time Machine Server (for over 100 Mac's) and Deploy Studio is a late 2012 i7 2.3Ghz with 16GB RAM. We have some external Thunderbolt WD disk drives attached to for extra storage. It originally came with 4GB RAM but as we added more load the RAM was the first bottleneck we reached so max out your RAM , the 2012 had removable RAM, but the latest ones don't so make sure you get as much as you can afford in it now.

Found word, excel PowerPoint and one note crashed like mad on el captain, outlook crashed and would not load again without rebooting the OS, macrumors at the time had many users saying the same thing and then a article said Microsoft and apple were working together to try and resolve crashing issues of office 2016 and el captain, not sure if they have been fully resolved yet.

Yes, its an OS X program

If you don't have one already, get Deploy Studio installed and running to image your Mac's over the network. Its all no cost. Also get Munki going as its ace for pushing out things like Flash Player which seem to have no end of updates.

Administrative Access and the works
Quackers replied to GRitchie's topic in Learning Network Manager
On shared computers you lock it down to maintain a consistent user state so it does NOT effect teaching and learning. If its a 1:1 allocated machine you could argue to make sure unlicensed software is not put onto school owned machines and remind the head that its them facing jail time for unlicensed software on work machines. -
You need the Windows Performance Toolkit (Its available for Windows 7 too although the link is for Windows 8/8.1) https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/hh162945.aspx There was a trace tool in that kit we used when we had 1 suite of PC's talking 10 minutes to login it showed us a graph with each process and how long it was talking to run.

No, we are just moving from OS X Mavericks to OS X Yosemite. We stay 1 year behind on what should be the most stable release (normally .5). I was tempted with El Capitan to skip Yosemite as i thought it was very good for a .0 release, but then found Microsoft Office 2016 does not play nice with it.

What are other schools using for grade and level assessment software? Our SLT are currently looking at what options are out there, so far they have looked at 4 Matrix ( Welcome | 4Matrix Online ) , there must be more...

Im a little confused, you link to a DEP guide, if you are using DEP you should not need to supervise them or use Apple Configurator as DEP supervises them over the air during the first run setup process.

I have a First Gen Air, and an iPad Mini 2 at home and i use the Mini most. Its just more comfortable to hold with it being smaller. Only time i seem to use the Air is for using Microsoft Office or playing some games, everything else i head for my Mini. Don't forget there will also be the iPad Pro from next month to add into the size question.

Disabling SELinux has fixed it, thanks never even heard of that.

I've double checked the permissions and even as a temp measure just to try and get it working give 777 to both folders and it still errors. Can anybody see anything wrong? Its Cent OS, the httpd service is running as the user apache , so i've made apache the owner to /var/www/cgi-bin and /var/www/midas and yet the bloody thing still moans it don't have write permission.

Any linux guru's know how do i give perl write permissions to certain directories? Trying to install some web based software and the install errors saying perl cannot write to the directories i've specified. Im familiar with the chmod and chown commands as i have to use these to give the apache account certain privileges, but i've never done anything with perl before.

No i was told this in person from a Senior iOS engineer at Apple.

We have had a Fortigate 200B as our firewall and filter since 2010. Never missed a beat and love it. I'm guessing they run light speed along side it because the Fortigates logging needs other parts to work such as Forticloud, and light speed is an education aimed product.

I would abandon it, Apple don't advise Profile Manager for large deployments it does not scale well.

Does anybody have Policy Central with iPads? We don't currently have Policy Central but we are looking at what monitoring tools their are for iOS due to all this radicalisation legislation that came in July 1st. Currently with the iPads we just log internet traffic, but i believe they want more securus style monitoring? What are others using?

The 5p Plastic Bag Charge: All You Need To Know - BBC News
Quackers replied to 6Foot2's topic in General Chat
Yeah like a 5p charge is going to make me take bags back to the supermarket. Pee's me off, they assume i drive to the shops and keep a stash in boot, i don't i walk, and they also assume that i have planned to go the shop, i'm normally out walking and decide to nip in while passing, i don't do weekly shops so to reduce food waste since i eat a lot of fresh produce. Safeway had it right in the 90's on how to reduce bag usage for those who go weekly, and that was self scan + those large green plastic containers and trollies made for them. But they went bye bye and no other supermarket has taken this approach. -
Apple not using the Microsoft Windows logo when the occasion calls for it
Quackers replied to 6Foot2's topic in General Chat
To be fair, its inline with how bad Microsofts logo's have been recently. Just compare Windows 8's logo to Windows 1.0 in this image.... http://winsource.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/windows-logos-640x255.png Yet all the other Windows logos are nice. -
I don't think i will ever see Exchange 2016, we are still (and 5 other sites we manage) on Exchange 2010 and started the transition to Office 365 on the main site, having their mailbox in the cloud. Gave everybody a quota of 1GB for mailbox staff wise originally years ago, and its just not enough and teachers just don't have time to delete emails so always getting asked to increase it which i do, because if i say no they go to SLT who come to me anyway and say please increase it email is important to us. Our mailbox database store is almost 600GB and backups are starting to take forever. Plus add that we have more devices than ever connecting, iPhones, iPads, and then there Mac on top its just makes sense to dump this load in the cloud as we have a decent leased line.

Try this per user setting (open terminal, paste, then logout/login) defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true Every time Mac OS opens a folder on a network share its create a file that stores info , a bit like the desktop.ini that Windows does. That tells it not to which made a big difference on Mavericks for us, so might do the trick on Yosemite for you. You can always re run with false if it makes no difference.

What happens when you use the FQDN instead of just the computer name? i.e. \\stm-sr-002.stm.internal ?
