I can imagine a few unscrupulous salespeople who sold a school SCEP/FEP as part of their ESS agreement get in touch and let them know that it wont install with Windows 10 and see if they want to buy an Antivirus program from the. Schools/Academies with a dedicated IT Services/Support department will tell them where to go but any that dont have their own IT Support department (mainly Primary education) may end up parting with some cash to buy a third part piece of software. I've seen schools purchase thousands of pounds worth of unnecessary things like this and until someone puts them straight they simply trust the salesperson who called them.

I can see sales of third-party antivirus/antimalware software increasing now then.

We use Microsofts System Center Enpoint Protection as out antivirus/malware protection and after installing Windows 10 Educational edition it tells me that SCEP is not compatible! Has SCEP/FEP been replaced, if so with what?

It's pretty random I've got 2 computers from across the school in IT Services and have been rebooting them all morning and they've both blue screened at different times, the PCs can be working fine for hours at a time (or sometimes just minutes) before it happens.

"Recovery point creation failed" error message on some servers in SCDPM 2012 R2. In the Event Viewer is says "VSSError: The specified object was not found" The object in question is the partition that that particular backup was being performed on. So, I went in to the DPM Administrator Console and stopped the protection of the member is question and deleted the disk replica but not the tape ones. I then re-added the server to the protection group and it then started to backup some of the data but then failed with the same error again. There is 10TB free in the disk pool so why wont it just use that to backup my server??? Surely deleting/removing it from the protection group and then adding it again should re-allocate new space from the 10TB of free space?

Mutiny all the way! As an educational user we get around a 90% discount! We have a wallboard shown on a wall mounted monitor in our room so we can see at a glance what is going on and we get email alerts from it telling us when RAM and CPU are running high (you can set what percentages it notifies you at) along with telling us if a server has just rebooted or has disconnected from the network. It's free to use for up to 10 devices so you can give it a go and bung on a server or two along with any switches you have and see how you get on.

HP told us over the phone to remove them from the faulty switch as the ones they send out do not come with them.

You should use the OEM recovery disk(s) that came with the computers (or the recovery partition if you havent wiped it), else you will have to format the hard disk before selling them off. As far as I am aware, technically the OEM license is only valid for the original purchaser/business so if you sell it on (certainly from a business point of view) you need to get a 'Refurbished Licence' from Microsoft (I dont mean a second hand licence, they actually have cheaper licences for this sort of thing and they call them Refurbished).

One of our very old HP switches has been playing up and had a noisy fan so we rang HP up to take advantage of the lifetime warranty and after 20 minutes on the phone yesterday they are despatching a replacement switch to us today! We are then to use the box it comes in to send back the faulty switch. I was expecting to have to send them the switch in the first instance before they would do anything, but no! World Class service from a World Class company!

We seem to getting this message on a BSOD across a fair few of our machines ranging from a new Intel Core i5 to an ancient Core2Duo computer with the same build (excluding drivers of course) on them. In the Event Viewer it simply says Bugcheck 0x00000050 which when you look it up simple means "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" which is what I already knew! I could understand it it was on one particular make/model as it could be a driver issue but it's happening on brand new PCs as well as older ones. Any ideas what could be causing this to occur on random student machines??

Yes and no. Yes on older computers, no on newer ones.

That's what I used too, very helpful. SCCM isnt perfect, well actually it's the Driver manufacturers that aren't perfect especially on the cheaper models of computers the drivers tend not to get injected correctly. If you buy a business grade computer from the likes of Dell or Lenovo they actually have SCCM driver packs ready for you to import in to your SCCM server. If not you may have to mess about with silent install .exe files which are hit and miss sometimes. It's not as quick as Ghost, but then that is by design so it doesnt grind your network to a halt. It's less interaction from a techie point of view as once youve set up your Task Sequences you either PXE boot and run them or you can use the Software Center that it installs in to Windows and then you leave it along to do its magic and then they're all ready to go!

PROBLEM SOLVED - after approx 48hrs it seems to have sorted itself out as I've just looked again and it's now in the right place so I can now back it up with SCDPM HOORAY!

The other day I needed to move a VM from one Hyper-V host to another (both Server 2012R2). Using SCVMM 2012R2 I moved the server with a Live Migration which worked a treat. Now to update the backups... we use SCDPM 2012R2 so I needed to tell that to backup the VM from the new host, however when modifying the Protection Group it wasnt listed on the new Hyper-V host, but was still listed on the old server and backups are failing as it isnt there any more as I've moved it! I'm replicating the server now to one of our replication servers in a different building so I at least have some sort of backup but I need to get SCDPM sorted out, so help!!

So what MDM solution do you use then?

I guess what I'm looking for is for a couple of companies that can provide this kind of solution to come and chat with us as the school involved to discuss their requirements and then to see if/how they can help provide this. I can remember seeing loads of companies at the Bett show I went to a couple of years ago but as it wasnt something I was looking in to at the time, I didnt make a note of any of the companies.

On of our schools has 60 iPads that are not currently managed so I'm looking for recommendations of an easy to use MDM solution for them - if you use an MDM solution for your iPads and like how it works, please can you recommend it to me? Do you also use some sort of portal from the same MDM solution provider to easily enable your pupils/students to access network resources like printers and network shares for saving work etc. then please recommend that too? I'm looking to make sure that the school can easily and effectively make full use of these iPads as they are already used a fair bit but with the right MDM and portal type solution I think they could be used even more. Thanks.

We too have this issue, from what I gather it's a known issue and despite various so-called 'fixes' we still see it with random users. All the fixes seem to be part of Windows Updates but even after ensuring all have been installed we still see the issue happening now and again.
