We've just bought a Netgear ReadyNAS NVX. Bought with 1 TB and got 1 free think the offer is still going. Very easy to set up and you just backup to the network share. Drives are setup in redundant array as well so you can worry a bit less about failiures.

Very odd. I have this dll registered on my windows 7 machine thought it would work the same. I just put it into the syswow64 folder and did the usual regsvr32 command and it put it in for me. Only use it to create new year 7 accounts through a spreadsheet but makes it a doddle

Is this a password to view the file or just to view the vba code. If it is password protected for opening the document you can try importing it to google docs as I don't think it bothers checking. No freeware programs for vba passwords from what I can see. I've had a couple of xls files which can be hacked using the tool on this site How to remove, crack, or break a forgotten Excel xls password but the newer xlsx files are more difficult. You might be able to rename the extension to .zip and see if you can extract them as this is basically all they are.

I got bored today so converted the old adm files that shutdownertron uses to the new admx format. Copy the contents of the zip file to your \\server\sysvol\domain.com\policies\policydefinitions folder. You should get shutdownertron in the list of admin templates by itself and no longer under classic templates Apologies if this has already been done by someone else but I could find it in a search Shutdownertron-admx-1.3.3214.zip

Looks like i may have solved this myself. Already had movie maker installed on my machine so I uninstalled it and moviemaker.msi popped up in my temp folder. Just going to see if it will install standalone on a test machine. Edit (That will be a yes and deployed via GPO)

Has anyone tried to deploy this to machines. I tried adding it to my WSUS server but only the live essentials and photo gallery seem to be there. Is this even possible. Can I cheat and run the live essentials setup to capture the movie maker msi when it gets downloaded?

change the user password? If you do this on the domain controller while the user is logged on it will break the current network connection trust relationships. This will make it ask for credentials again I think. afaik there isn't an easier way to do this

There are 2 .bmp files in the folder. one is for the guest accounts and one is the default user picture. I'm guessing that there should be one for the default logon picture when no user is logged on although have a blank frame with no-one logged in does make sense and could be "by design". Changing the logon background certainly works very easily. as you can see from the attached.

It seems that you're right. Turned off UAC and reimaged. Domain join completed without a problem. Would you know if there is a group policy to turn UAC back on again?

I created a 64bit image to run an unattended installation and had no problems deploying to all IT suites for the students. Following this I imaged a test machine to create a teacher image (just install sims and our instant messenger on top of the students image) and ran sysprep again but when I deploy this image the computer name appears to change but on a gpresult it thinks it's a different name. This means that no machine policies get applied only user ones At first I thought it could be the unattended file but i used the same one as the student image just to check. So now I'm thinking it must be something to do with the prestaging AD bit and it appears it's not that either so how do I stop it happening as the machine is given a new SID so regenerating that won't help Driving me crazy this one and now I'm getting the same with the 32bit images built from scratch for some of the older laptop's that only have x86 processors.

Are you using a local install of audacity? I'm getting a similar problem from a local install because what it seems to do is save lots of ridiculously large files for all recordings in a temp directory on the c drive (That students definately can't write to). Try an Admin log in or try putting it on a network drive and allowing the students modify rights. What would be handy was if Audacity didn't find it necessary to save these file or at least delete them when finished with. I'm bit annoyed with the course content for this as well as they are told to save as uncompressed .wav files which in some case instantly fills their quota.

Been running SIMS with windows 7 with UAC on. The only problem I got on install was errors about the date/time settings which I needed to change for the system account. After that it worked without problem (- 16bit apps obviously). As said above you need to run first as admin to write the connect.ini or send it via a group policy to all staff machines then you can be sure it's identical for everyone.

Work load fluctuates randomly. Can go for a couple of days sometimes a week with no reported problems so gives me a chance to get inventory updated. Recently though been having problems all day every day and now I find myself with a bit of a backlog

This might seem like a daft question but why do you want IE8 on a non-internetted (new word?) computer

I think this is due to windows 7's new system boot partition. I would have put XP on first and then 7 as it will recognise the older OS and put a link in the boot menu for it. I have a similar setup with win7 and ubuntu but had to put windows on first as it didn't recognise the ubuntu install

I've done something similar to this with a testing website for the students You need to set up a log on script with gpedit.msc and some machine system settings. Your best bet is to create a standard user account and remove the computer from the domain. Then you can set the account to log in without requiring a password. Firstly on the computer bit of the local machine group policy go to system\scripts and set maximum wait time for logon scripts to 0. This means the logon scripts will run until terminated or they finish. In the logon script put the following "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -k http://yourwebsite logoff This runs IE in Kiosk mode so no toolbars are visable. You can exit this with the usual Alt-F4 command but then the second line of the script kicks in and logs you off. If you want you can put the script into the startup folder in the start menu for the user. That way if you need to do any maintenance you can just log off your user and log in as admin with no script
