And you get proper notation? i.e. you can actually read what it says? I have mine set as user options but will test with the computer config side too That seems to be fine.

Only other thing I can think of at the moment is are you able to open the xml file and edit it? I had this problem when I didn't specify the file type to be XML on the command line so I ended up with a bin file with an xml extension.

I would expect to see the file inheriting permissions but stranger things have happened. I've just been back to my setup and I did use a domain user to create the layout. Made a user account just for this purpose with domain admin rights so that they were able to elevate the powershell prompt. Last thing to look at is if you have the group policy set to remove the all users start menu folders. (user setting/admin templates/start menu & taskbar/remove common program folders from the start menu) A lot of the tiles will relate to the all users start menu and if this setting is on they disappear. This caught me out as the resulting start layout had no desktop, pc or IE tiles.

Have you checked the file permissions on the actual xml file itself? Which account did you use to create the xml file in the first place. I used a local machine account to do this but I'm unsure if using a domain account will give you a different file. I placed mine in the netlogon share for the domain as I was guaranteed everyone has read access there.

Which version of windows are you attempting to deploy with this. I had an enormous amount of trouble with some hp 655 laptops http://www.edugeek.net/forums/o-s-deployment/129863-frustration-lan-driver.html There are some tools that use can use with winpe image to see what drivers are loaded.

Kind of. The design software and players run on Adobe Air, but you can just run it on IE in kiosk mode and it will do the same. Can be seen anywhere though so the head even take a laptop with our signage web page on any primary visits\conferences.

I did use XIBO but now I use this FREE Digital Signage for everyone Has a nicer interface I think and is cloud based so I don't need a webserver for it

OK back to the drawing board for that then. It seems to be the downloading of the drivers that takes the longest but why it has to download them every time is beyond me. Can I ask what other Group policy settings you have in relation to this (point and print restrictions etc)?

I've found GPP printers to be very slow but I like the way that you do it @mrbios even if the computer names are a bit suspect . Do you find that these apply quickly enough in day to day login? My setup for this left it taking nearly 2mins to log on sometimes always getting "applying GPP printers policy" on login screen

I've been playing with the uptime tiles feature and following the instructions in the userguide have added one for our main server. It shows that the server is down but the server is definately working as the VM for HAP+ runs on this server. It even says the localhost server is down whether I use IP or netbios or FQDN. Any ideas how I get these working. HAP+ VM is running server 2008R2 and is a member server in the domain. All other features work fine just the live uptime tiles. Thanks

Finally solved this but feel I need to give the absurd solution. BIOS update needed but to make it difficult not the bios update on the HP support page, one buried in the forums. Technically this is microsofts fault for changing the way win8.1 allocates resources but the least HP could do was make this bios update available on the correct page on the website. After applying this bios update winpe works fine as does win8.1 once installed.

Update: using the tools on this website Alternative to device manager of Windows I have been able to see that the NIC drivers are loaded however a lower version number than the one I injected. I have discovered another Realtek device without a driver so I'll see if I can inject that one. Think this will have to wait for Monday now

It appears that HP are not so on the ball as DELL so they don't have a driver pack for WinPE 5. I have tried to boot these now with the boot.wim from the windows 8.1 media directly through wds but I get a "no DHCP server found" error which obviously means the driver isn't loaded. As a last resort I have burned my custom windows image to a dvd to install manually instead.

Thanks for the replie. I have found the hp win pe pack and will try with those once downloaded. I mounted the litetouch image to verify the driver had been injected and it has, however there is a native windows driver in the image as well for the same hardware. Should the driver I inject override this one? I tried with a flat litetouch image just to see whether this driver would work but it doesn't. I also tried the drvload command in the flat image and get the same error 80070103 which still means that it thinks it has a better driver than the one I'm trying to add. I've never had this problem before with new machines it was always a simple case of getting the drivers and injecting them job done. I'm going to add just the driver for this hp machine and see what result that gives me.

I'm having a little trouble with some new HP laptops. I have downloaded the newest driver from HP for the LAN (it's a Realtek 8168) and added it to my WinPE drivers, then updated the deployment share to get the litetouch wim. I then copy the wim to windows wds and pxe boot the litetouch image. The issue I'm seeing with these laptops is a failure to connect to the deployment share. It gives the PCI\VEN string of the device which is the Realtek NIC that I have downloaded and injected the drivers for. I have tried the drvload command from here as well with the driver on a usb stick but it comes back with an error 80070103 which I have found (with a lots of googling) means the driver or a better one already exists. If a better driver exists why do I not have any connection to my deployment share? A quick ipconfig confirms no LAN devices exist. This is proving to be the most confusing bit of troubleshooting I've ever had to do so I'm hoping someone else has had a issue similar to this and can give me some pointers. Thanks for any help you can give.

Have you tried using file system security policies for the machine not user. The public folders only ever have read access for users unless they are administrators (Which I guess your teachers are not) so a log on script will not be able to alter these permissions unless you can find some way of elevating. If you go to Group Policy/Computer Config/Policies/Windows Settings/Security Settings/File System you can add the public desktop and change the ntfs permissions just as you would with a network share. You can then tailor the permissions to suit and ensure they are propagated to the files in the folder.

I've not used this but I have had to set up programs that say they need to run as administrator. Generally it's because they need read/write access to files in the installation directory. You could try allowing standard users read/write permissions to the coffeecup installation directory. If this works then you can probably remove access on things until you find the file required. This can be done through group policy if needs be through the file restrictions policy.

We are using two way at the moment teachers2parents and Moodle integrated with SIMS. If we need to send a letter we use Moodle forums and for quick messages we use teachers2parents. Seems to work fine so far and has been a big step toward going paperless.

There is a way of preventing access to anything that is typed into the address bar of explorer, unless you need that functionality for something. GPO location user settings/admin templates/start menu and taskbar/remove run from start menu. this also prevents typing unc paths into explorer

Does this group policy object have any deprecated settings. I'm thinking of legacy internet settings or something like that. Can you run GP modelling on a machine/user combination that uses the policy?

Hide all of the folders/shortcuts so it will just appear empty but the shorcuts will still run. I'm a bit confused as to why it's a problem for them to browse there if they are allowed to run the applications anyway?
