Like we didn't see that one coming. The new "Win 10 Education Pro" seems to be designed to avoid "stop advertising to kids" complaints. It'll be interesting to see the response from people who paid for a copy (i.e: not a "free" upgrade) only to have adverts thrust at them.

Wifi Internet access reporting
pete replied to Carrot63's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
If you're using user auth for RADIUS on the wireless, you'll have a log of accounts associated with each device (AD account + MAC is logged by default). Look at event id 6278 and 6272, for example with source "Network Policy Server" (assumes Windows Server providing RADIUS). If you can tie that to DHCP leases at that time of interest, you know who* was accessing what on which device. or rather, whose account is tied to the device. -

I've submitted the .dll to Avast and they say: which is nice. -
[sims] SIMS + Avast = Microsoft.Win32.TaskScheduler.dll flagged as PUP
pete posted a topic in MIS Systems
Came across this when poking around SIMS doing a test restore to another directory. Microsoft.Win32.TaskScheduler.dll is being flagged by Avast Business as a potentially unwanted program. It lives in \\path\to\sql\MSSQL11.SQLINSTANCENAME\MSSQL\Binn\CLR\ VirusTotal analysis: https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/60b6175e3f224f0d753bf284e8f893f4c09c4e37a1ae14919dc0306cc78359be/analysis/1469534573/ @PhilNeal - Avast ticket is #93152- 1 reply

I'm assuming you want a school office-friendly tool? Try using PDFCreator to make the PDF - it generally produces smaller files than Office's built-in function. Play around with the settings until you get a balance between "small file size" and "still looks OK". For non-office friendly, ImageMagick and Ghostscript.

I use WSUS Package Publisher* (SCCM-lite). Grabbing, testing and pushing out to initial test groups for a flash/java/reader update takes maybe 15 minutes. Let it sit in the test group for a day or two (assuming it's not an actively-targetted 0-day) and then push out everywhere else unless there are problems. Updates for desktops are installed at 4pm or later, depending on when the machine is shut down. Installs can happen on a daily basis (if something's really behind on patches), but patches are pushed out midday on a Thursday for install late that afternoon. *https://wsuspackagepublisher.codeplex.com/

SamSung annoying Sign-In to Network - How do I kill it
pete replied to Davit2005's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Is it a random Samsung application or the default Android dialogue? What do the logs on whatever's handling the captive portal say? See if there's any "@Davit2005's phone did something odd/didn't respond in time so I kicked it off" messages. I've got unadulterated Android (Nexus) now, but my previous Samsung (before I put Cyanogen on it) had no problems talking to RADIUS-protected WiFi. -
Ah, we use Group Policy to push them out and set a sensible default. I did have one person with an odd spooler issue the other day and wondered if it was related to this, but restarting the spooler let them carry on (and mapping a printer as them worked).
-
There was a reddit thread about it here (which veers off into drama about mid-way down, but there's various people reporting success/failure with the workaround): I haven't had this yet (*touches wood*).

Open Evening Advert at @Sagima's school - "Now with more Pokemon than $other_school". Auditors later question "lures" line item in budget.

^ Reading the Arstechnica.com article here: Some public places want more Pokémon Go?but the Holocaust Museum does not [updated] | Ars Technica It looks like the response it "open a ticket", but you need to know the name of the Pokestop. Yes, that's the Holocaust Museum. Whoever should have been looking over the map data at Niantic to avoid PR disasters needs firing (or, more likely, hiring since it seems no-one's doing it).

There's a couple of popular zones near the school, one of which is centred on a main road, according to student gossip.

I've just poked around a bit more and the policy settings are currently working for me deployed as a computer policy. This is using the windowstore.admx dated 14/11/2015 in a standard Central Store (\\domain\sysvol\domain\policies\PolicyDefinitions) setup. See attached: That's Windows 10 enterprise 1511 using a test machine with a computer configuration GPO at the closest OU level and it appears to be working for me. The settings are a bit inconsistent because we're doing the "what Store apps do we want to keep, if any?" discussion and how blocking the store affects updating said apps etc.
-
Even after applying the 1511 .admx files from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48257&WT.mc_id=rss_alldownloads_all ? Honest question, poking around with a 1511 Win10 build and there appeared to be a new windowsstore.admx included. Edit: I'm using Win10 Enterprise for my testing.

Yeah, it was an outside chance and you'd end up having to mirror python.org etc... I emailed Jetbrains support (they sent me a "how are we doing?" email) and my request was tagged onto the end of the ticket here: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-144263

^ Given it's likely flipping a command-line switch in Ghostscript, that seems excessive. Is that under a government procurement contract or something else? There's fixed negotiated prices for additional stuff post-purchase on the gov contracts.
-
OK, follow up for the next person finding no results. Roughly £650/year for the programme, which includes 30 exam vouchers, of which 20 might be useful. You'll need to purchase additional vouchers on top of that. We spoke to couple of Unis and HE colleges running the program and they all told us they wish they hadn't bothered due to the faff involved in dealing with Pearson. So we're knocking the idea on the head for now.
-
^ Yup. We added it for a similar (but smaller-scale) archiving project and I knew that the default PDF options would make it largely pointless and create needlessly bulky PDFs. Most copier manufacturers should have it as an option, either built-in from contract start or a one-off purchase per copier. For Konica Minolta it's: and requires a KM bloke with a USB stick for ~10 minutes.
-
If you use an MFD, make sure it creates text-based PDFs and doesn't just sling an image file in per-page. On KM kit it's about ~£100 to add the ability to spit out searchable PDFs.

That's odd - after quick test here, a manual install (allusers, Win10, 64bit version) does show up in a Programs & Features. Ignore the CVE entry - it's a test Win10 vm.
-
^ So assuming they're writing it to sensibly resize/change UI at different resolutions, where does this leave all the various mobile apps?
-
^ what happens if you open a command prompt and type: where python.exe and (if it finds it) python --version I haven't tested 3.5.2 yet but I spotted your other thread. If what you've done so far isn't successful I'd be tempted to use @Arthur's method in a custom update, do a full install for allusers and base my "can it be installed/is it installed" detection on the file version of python.exe (greater than or equal to, so it doesn't clash with newer versions of python you push out).

Criminology (Sixth Form) & Web Filtering
pete replied to Tefters's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
The problem is that Smoothwall (for example) categories don't (historically) make value judgements within categories. The abortion category contained, the last time I checked: Useful medical and legal information about abortion. People having sensible discussions about abortion. People being crazy and violent on both sides of the argument. As someone who did a couple of criminology modules at Uni*, I'd leave the proxy as is and look through the course topics to tweak where needed. I don't recall needing to look up anything more contentious than crime statistics online and news reports of particular crime, but then we did have a whole wing of the library devoted to books and journals on the topic. I'd have met @dapaulio's nascent criminology dept's request with "haha, no - show me your course guide". *I'm aware I'm verging into "as a mother" territory here.
