Both of us here don't get provided with a laptop, we have 1 that the techie uses but only because we managed to keep it a secret! I've gone through about 6 laptops in the past year, as each time I aquire one from somewhere, within a fortnight someone else's breaks and needs to be replaced, and guess what? mine is usually the only "spare" one going I've given up on having a laptop now, I'll stick to my desktop and I've always got my own personal eeePC (XP Pro) and HP iPaq to take with me on my travels

7 reasons why I dont want kids!

OK so in lots of posts now I've seen people saying that they're ignoring Vista, staying with XP etc etc So, for those who are set in their XP ways, where are you getting your laptops from now? Everywhere I look now, there seems to be either a bunch of medicore XP laptops left in stock 'cos no-one'll buy them, a bunch of very expensive XP laptops left in stock 'cos no-one'll pay that much for 'em, or 1 or 2 stock of an almost decent laptop which isn't enough for what I need. Replacing 12 laptops (and this time next year will be 30+) I really could do with them being the same make/model, for price and ease of maintaining, so getting a few from here and there isn't really good enough. Best I've found is "downgrade" options from places like Dell, but that has the potential to screw up without drivers / codecs etc, plus I'm sure I've read that it invalidates the warranty too? Not to mention that I really don't want to have to pay an extra 50-odd quid to get rid of an OS that I don't want in the first place!

this is what I want to get around - I want to just have the 1 profile for use on either OS at any time, as we'll have a mix of Vista laptops and XP PCs. I've read how it can be done, just wondered if anyone had actually done it.

have you got a) your vista machine/s connected to your domain and b) roaming profiles If so, how did you solve the problem of profiles moving between Vista and XP? I have read that adding the ".v2" extension to profiles solves the problem, but have no way of testing this myself (yet). If you used Folder Redirection to get around the problem (as recommended by MS) then what effect did that have on the ability to access profiles outside of school? Its looking like we'll be getting at least 9 Vista laptops here soon, so I'm trying to get as much info as possible before being launched into the situation! Cheers guys. Pete

I had just the 1 Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop throughout my 4 years of University, never needed anything fixing hardware-wise, and of course having XP meant it was pretty solid OS-wise too so my vote is for a Toshiba

From my experience, a laptop used by pupils, and charged & stored in a lapsafe every night might make it to the 18 month mark. MIGHT. Far more likely that the battery will be dead at around 12 months. Of course, there are exceptions, and no doubt someone will soon post that they've got laptops that are 3 years old and still going. Fair enough, but thats just not been my experience.

yup, I live at home with my brother and our parents. after 4 years of Uni, almost £14k of debt, and bringing home less than £1k a month, I can't afford to pay out over £600 a month to have food, electricity, heating and a roof over my head together with paying off my student loans and having a little free money for my own interests thats not to say I don't give my parents rent, but they charge me far less than any other landlord would As for the "extending parents house" idea, seems like a good idea to me! Why bother scraping to try and get a new house, when you can just build an extra room or two onto the existing house? Within my parents house I have my own bedroom, my own study / living room, and me and my brother share a bathroom - so its actually *better* in terms of space than renting with other people too! I think, what with the increased costing and everything, the idea of the "geeky guy living in his parents basement at the age of 35" is fast becoming the norm, and for financial reasons, not the whole "parents cant let go / kid is too lazy / sad to move out" thing besides, if you all still live together anyway, you're already well prepared for them living with you when they get old and retire!

Ah yes, nothing nicer than sitting outside in the sun with the laptop and a (in my case) nice cold Strongbow eeePc's were MADE for this!

new maps arn't that great, had them for the Xbox 360 for a while and Killhouse is the only decent one. Creek and Broadcast are just annoying levels for sniping, and chinatown is just a remake of a COD2 map!

The kids here are hyper enough, without adding Caffine to the mix! Never have these "energy drinks" myself, don't see the point...... although Red Bull and Vodka is OK

Site is fine here, as are all of the files within the folders (I didn't have to do the "Extract" to view them, but did that as well and its fine both ways) Dunno what the problem is, must be an id10t error

the problem I have with that is XP driver availability, how long / for what models, codecs for DVD drives, and the general uncertainty that the unit will still work 100% after Vista is wiped and XP is installed. Oh well, at least a few places still have it for now if we're desperate

Well, from looking at sites like Dell, Dabs, HP, EBM, Lenovo and Ramesys, it appears that XP Pro is well and truely gone No pre-install options for it, no downgrade options to it, no licenses being sold for it... anyone seen it anywhere lately?

try using a recovery program on the recycle bin, at least it'll show up if anything was deleted and maybe get them back too? Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File Recovery - Home Recuva is a good one, posted here the other day, free at the moment so get it while it is! Also, the way that only the non-basic icons were missing from the dekstop and his wallpaper being gone sounds a bit like a temporary profile was loaded instead of his own? happens to the pupils here with the laptops quite a bit, they only get the default windows background and the icons in the "all users" desktop folder, and of course no network drives or work. worth a check in the documents and settings (if you havent already) to see if the work is in any of the folders in his own profile there (and if there is any evidence of a temp. profile there too)

any 1 of those 3 things would please me! lol

Our server room / our office has some windows covered by both vertical and horizontal black bars, which I can only see if I get up, turn around and walk 20 paces to the other side of the room. then I get a lovely view of the manky old half-dilapidated huts, the KS2 playground and a bin. Lovely.

In this day and age, where people spend more time online than outside, I think it's a justified way of meeting someone. Personally I've never, and would never, pay to join of these sites. But to those who do, fair play to ya.
