I know they are a pricier than some, but a lot of RM's kit comes with the option of XP Pro downgraded from Vista Business or just a plain install of XP Pro SP2.

I've used Zyxel wireless routers personally (i.e. at home / uni) before and they all seemed fine to me. Quick and easy to set up, and once done they just run happily.

I had 3 heaving boxes of power cabling here. Then I decided to have a clear out. Threw out all the old ones, tatty ones, short ones, and kept only the decent newish ones. Now I have just 2 heaving boxes Same goes for network cabling as well - I've got CAT5 coming out of my ears! Isn't it funny how you keep all this "spare" kit "in case you need it", and then the 1 thing you actually DO need is the one thing you don't have?

Never underestimate the speed which staff expect! Anything that can speed something up, I'd consider (well, within reason anyway!) We are making the move to gigbit soon too.

I've had my 4Gb eeePc for a couple of weeks now. Its great for surfing the net (especially in front of the TV), and its real nice to be able to sit in the pub using thier free wifi to email while enjoying a cold one I haven't used it much at work TBH (I bought it for me personally anyway) as I can't really see much application for it. OK, so the Small+Light factor means its easy to take with you anywhere in school, and you can remote in using it if you need to (contrary to what others have said, I find that its very good for remoting in; the built-in remoting software works with a variety of VNC-type remote programs, the screen adjusts to the correct size etc. which is more than can be said for my PDA ) Me and the Techie had a few good games of Frozen Bubble over the wireless here, that was a laugh Its nice to take to meetings to make notes etc. and being able to connect to a projector to make quick presentation I image will be useful at some point too. Unlocking it into "advanced mode" is good IMO (doing this gives you a more regular-looking desktop environment as opposed to the "so simple a kid can use it" menu system, which although good, I personally didn't like much); its just a shame that a further bit of coding is needed after doing this in order to get it remember your desktop icons, otherwise they are lost when you turn off. Still, even for a n00b to Linux-type coding it was pretty straightforward (apart from the school filters not letting me access Updates! ) Other bits; The webcam is not bad quality The wireless can be a bit buggy (doesnt like spaces in SSID's and wont accept a WAP key ) The voice command doesn't work properly, and isn't worth the disk space it takes up No optical drive, but can do everything via external or network to another PC's drive so no biggie really Go for the SD card or USB stick for more memory, upgrading the 4Gig flash inside will be a nightmare (not to mention wrecking your warranty!) Overall I like it, its not the most versatile or powerful bit of kit, but for Internert access, simple word processing and speadheeting, it beats lugging around a heavy laptop, looks nice, and for any non-techie people, has the additional "wow" factor that we all love to see in their eyes (c'mon, you know we all do)

Installed this morning on my PC here, and seems fine. not noticed any difference with anything so far, but at least all is still working and it's not slowed down!

We're having this done here too, the company who is putting it all in just said they'd "knock a hole in the wall, put the cable/s through then fill in the hole again" hmmmmmm....we'll see how it goes, I guess............

Teachers get laptops as standard, and only teachers. Everyone else only gets one if it is deemed they need it for their job (i.e. the 2 SEN workers have 1 laptop each for the pupil/s they work with all day to use). No TA's or any of the Admin staff have a laptop. And yes, no-one is "entitled" to a laptop unless the HT / SMT / LEA / Governers say so. Even the techie and I have to share 1 laptop between us! but then anyone can get access to a desktop, and there are more than enough to go around when they are needed.

ah yes, there's nothing nicer than ripping into the packaging of a new bit of kit..... especially if its something you didn't have to pay for yourself! speaking of new kit, think its almost time to open my new eeepc...... I was going to leave it until after school dunno if I can wait though.......

Cheers for all the responses guys I went ahead and ordered the 4Gb White 701 edition of the Asus eeePc. Will just have to see how it fares once I get my hands on it tomorrow I agree that the HP looks nice, but I bet that it overheats especially when placed on your lap, not to mention that the touchpad looks nasty with the buttons at the side. There are a few other UMPC's around, but after reading lots (and I mean LOTS ) of reviews, it seems that the low price tag and the ease of use of the eePc 700/701 means it's still the most popular and well-rated UMPC around
