All the blocking here is done by E2BN/LEA/SWGfL and they chose to block it for pupils and allow staff to access it :shrug: I have been repeatedly denied the ability to do in-house filtering and so everyone is now aware that I have no power or control over blocking, and that's that. If a teacher puts up a youtube video in their class that isn't appropriate and gets called up on it, it's no skin off my nose; I really don't care about it anymore. hmmm, perhaps it was actually a science lesson and it was Schrödinger's Cat

Priamry school (4ish to 11ish, here we have; 1x IWB/Projector combination for each classroom with 2x "roaming" projectors for use in other locations when required A set of 6 Digiblue cameras which the pupils use for various things, latest craze has been for stop-motion animation, edited with either the digiblue software or Windows Movie Maker (eew ) A fairly good quality digital camera (capable of video as well) assigned to each class teacher for day to day use A few odds and ends like a usb microscope, a couple of hand-held voice recorders (EasiSpeaks) for things like creating podcasts (Audacity), 'special' keyboards such as larger keys and the colour-coded RM ONE 'boards for special needs/young children Couple of TV/Video units and a "as needed" DVD player 30 PDA's (use is not yet decided, but certainly internet research for pupils is a potential) Learning Platform that's barely used at the moment I think that's it, I won't lsit software as we just have the standard stuff from places like 2Simple, RM Maths and the Primary Games series' of software. Ideally I'd like visualisers, a couple of roamers, more 'pupil' laptops and/or a much better ICT Suite, and there are plans in the works for creating "ICT Pockets" in the main corridors outside classrooms consisting of PC's in those desks that conceal everything until you need it. I find the most often the problem is not in the getting of the equipment / software, it's getting staff to actually use it to teach, as there is no specialist IT Teacher here and IT is the one lesson that almost all staff plan to have their PPA time on so it gets left to supply teachers or TA's to do it, much to he detriment of the pupils' education sadly

It have the title of 'ICT Manager' and as was said, it is more encompassing than Network Manager; NM implies that you are responsible for the network alone, where ICT Manager can (and does) include anything from Hardware maintenance to Software training to ICT Suite timetable creation to SIMS development to "can you have a look at the kettle/washing machine/other object with a microchip in it, and so on.

Thanks for the ideas, the whole "rotting in a cupboard" thing is what I can see happening, that's why I;m trying to get as many ideas as possible! I like the idea of using them on school trips though

I have been 'gifted' with 28 refurbished PDA's from a local company, but am struggling to find any decent ideas as to what our pupils can use them for. I know they can be used for things like SIMS registration / diaries etc for teachers but the Head seems pretty adamant that she wants the pupils using them Does anyone give PDA's to pupils and if so, what do they use them for? All I can invisage is them getting broken very quickly as the behaviour here is terrible most of the time!

2 years this July, started right after I graduated from uni Some days it feels like I only just arrived, other days it feels like I've been here forever!

We finish a week tomorrow, and so far we have 1 card between us. Don't expect anything though, at the most I think we've gotten 1 small box of something between us from 1 person. PS I'm half asleep this morning too, took me ages to figure out this thread started 3 years ago!

Is your unorganisation hindering your work? I've found that a great deal of the "organising" we did to start with has worn out over the last 12 months, to the point where we have folders for all kinds of stuff we don't do anymore. We've currently got (physical, paper-holding) folders for; Letters sent and recieved Printing logs Orders placed by us FITS folders ICT Mark folder Helpdesk weekly printout folder One personal folder each for myself and the techie with school policies signed etc. Our ICT policies folder Licenses (software) folder Hardware and Software audit folders I think there's more, but that's what gets used most and it does help keep you organised, so long as you stick to using them, which can be the hard bit! Day to day, I use my paper diary, a virtual post-it note on my screen, my PDA for alarmed important events, the rest I just keep in my head.

Most of the .swf files we have here open in IE7 OK, I've just tested a few and all fine, guess they must have the html tags in place as Geoff mentioned. If you don't want to go down that route though, I'd agree with the suggestion of the EOLSOFT flv player (from mattx's link in his post above), used that before and it's a good'un.

Every PC/Laptop here has IE7, don't see any problem with it. Personally I use Firefox, and a few of the staff have had to have FF installed on their PC/laptop as the LEA's outlook-based webmail doesn't work with any version of IE since they "updated" it last week The head has IE7, FF, Opera.... she likes to try out different browsers I think! lol

Here we are 1:38 now 500 pupils to 13 PC's in a "suite", all our laptops are dead, and no money anywhere to get anything new at all, we even just had our LEA/Governors pay out for stuff to help the teachers/admin (£1000's for a new network) but nothing for the kids. I can't ever see this school getting anywhere close to the 1:8 or 1:10 mark, at a push I'd say that we could get to 1:16, with 15 PCs in the "suite" and 15 laptops, but it'd break our bank astonishingly just to get that.

We have all out cabling done by an external company here, we're not allowed to do it ourselves (save for the odd 1 or 2 that we have run from one side of the room to the other through the ceiling with an RJ45 connector on both ends, so no termination required). something to do with a mixture of insurance on our safety (working in roofs etc.), electrical safety, cable quality/guarantee and warranty should something go wrong at a later date. Can't say I'm fussed much, saves me a lot of work sometimes!

A reasonable request is any request that you can be bothered doing Really though, if you're a Tech then it should be IT-related, or something very small such as helping out with playground duty or lunchtime supervision, on the understanding that any of the other actual playgound/lunch supervisors will be dealing with any problems reported by you to them. If you're the IT/Network Manager, then I guess you could reasonably be asked to do more seeing as how you are (in theory, anyway) in poition of higher authority.

I pretty much hated it, felt like a slower, rougher, more beta-esque version of COD4 if you ask me. Tryarch didn't have the best COD reputation going into this (COD3, anybody?) and yet again prove to be a less able developer than Infinity Ward. Roll on COD6, IW know how to get it right, COD2 was a better WW game than WaW I reckon.

We use tapes for 2 of our servers, they came with tape drives so we figured we'd use them. One of our other servers used a strnage combination of a USB drive and a small-form HDD disk, the other we use a portable HDD. All are stored offsite with relevant people (finance/admin backup with the Bursar, work/files/profiles etc. with us) Would like to change to all portable HDD's or maybe offsite storage done via the 'net, but for the time being money dictates we have to keep doing what we are doing

same here, I'm always told I'm hard to buy for as anything I want, I usually go get it pretty soon after I discover I want it I usually get shirts, socks, shower gels and whatever the new latest shaving craze is from Gillette (fusion Pro vibrating razor which sings to you in the shower or something )

woohoo! I loved the 1st series, and thought the second was good too - in fact, until it was pointed out above, I'd never ever considered that fact that series 2 has very little in the way of actual "IT" comedy in it!

I got mine at 00:01am on Friday morning as well (together with the Locust figurine and CoG Tags). The gun looked like a cheap kids toy IMO, I wasn't considering getting it anyway but after seeing it, no way do I think it's worth £30! Having had yesterday off work, I've already been through it twice on 2 difficulties, and about 25% done in Insane co-op. Its so muhc fun!
