LA stands for Local Access. An EAD is a direct piece of fibre from one location to another within about 25 km. the LA variant must have one of its ends terminating at the telephone exchange. It's therefore cheaper than a normal EAD circuit. We use this technology to form the last bit of our leased line services. Dave

Hello everyone, we're looking to trial a new GEA-FTTC product from one of our carrier partners and I'm looking for any schools interested in testing this for you and having the service at cost for 1 year as well as us paying the installation. You can have this with or without our content filtering / security service. So a little on the technology GEA (Generic Ethernet Access) FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) This is a new wholesale version of traditional FTTC (also known as BT Infinity). It works by using high speed fibre to the BT green street cabinet, then copper from the cabinet to your school. Unlike normal FTTC, GEA-FTTC uses BT's National Ethernet network and not the normal shared 21CN broadband network. Therefore a 1:1 contention ratio can be supplied giving leased line performance. Speed available still depends on how far away the school is from the street cabinet and this gets slower the further away you are. The specific product we are trialing guarantees a same speed upload / download of up to 20Mbit (depending on actual speed available on the line) but you can burst up to the maximum sync speed if spare capacity on the network is available. Therefore the offering is quite unique giving a minimum guaranteed speed but the availability to go faster as and when required. As part of the install we will send an engineer to site, install a fully managed Cisco router and we'll help integrate it into your existing network. We'll also let you know what speed to expect. Costs will be sub £2k for an Internet only variation which when compared to a 20Mbit full fibre leased line costing in the region of £5k - £6kpa is a bit of a bargain. No phone line needs to be installed as this is included in the installation charge we pay. Please note this service is only available where FTTC exists at your current exchange and street cabinet. sure do this en (this puts you into enable mode) conf t (this allows you to change the config) int dialer0 (selects the dialer0 interface) no ppp chap hostname gotadsl.co.uk/xxxxxxxxxxxx (removes the line) ppp chap hostname (puts in a replacement line) ppp chap password 7 (puts in replacement line) exit (takes you out of config mode) exit (takes you out of enable mode) wr m (writes the config to memory. Make sure you've already taken a backup of it!) How ever there are a few issues with your config. I highly suspect that TalkTalk Business does not support multi-link PPP which is going to be a big problem as this is what is used to do bonding. Also if you go to 1 x ADSL line get rid of the bandwidth 8000 lines under the atm interfaces. In fact thinking about it you only want 1 x ATM interface. Best put up the whole config as this will screw stuff up later too. Thanks Dave

Hello Edugeekers, I’m sure you’re all probably aware that in one way or another BT Openreach has something to do with the installation and service of the vast majority of full fibre leased lines throughout the country. I must admit I’m pleasantly surprised by BT Openreach’s announcement on Tuesday this week. Ofcom (The UK’s telecoms regulator) has ruled that BT Openreach held significant market power and therefore should be subject to tighter regulation of pricing. Although this was supposed to be on high speed fibre leased lines of 1Gbit and above, BT Openreach has also slashed costs of leased line connectivity of BT Ethernet Access Direct and BT Ethernet Access Direct Local Access circuits. Discounts on rentals of 25% on wholesale EAD LA circuits and 33% on point to point EAD circuits by BT Openreach on 100Mbit circuits will help drive the installation of faster Internet and point to point leased line circuits to schools and educational establishments throughout the UK. The average 100Mbit direct leased line connection when using BT fibre has now reduced by nearly £1,000pa compared to our old pricing. We’ve also passed on the £1,200pa saving on all point to point EAD leased line circuits immediately. Slashing the costs of 100Mbit circuits by BT will help drive faster speeds for primary and secondary schools throughout the country. Although the new pricing doesn’t come into effect until 1st May we are already offering the updated pricing on all quotations. Hi @sven FTTC = poor SLA and no guaranteed speeds Leased line = 1:1 contention ratio, dedicated SLA and speeds as fast as you want / can pay for. For a school of your size I'd always recommend a leased line over FTTC. I'll send you a PM. Thanks Dave

Evening all, I'm now back from London so can commet on this. Enta is one of our wholesale providers therefore this only affected a number of our customers and not our entire base or our own core network. Enta were hit with a bit of a double whammy, one was a major core network fault and then the next day a line card fault on one of their major ADSL interconnects with BT. See http://noc.enta.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Incident-Report-25032013.pdf We kept our customers informed as best we could as to what was happenign and when and apologise for the inconvenience this has caused. As with all leased line outages every customer can claim compensation and we'll automatically credit this from your last bill. Unlike many providers we pay where 1 hour downtime = 1 day credit. we did our first BETT show this year I'd recommend the following 1. Book your accomodation as early as you can for everyone. Don't stay right next to the BETT show as there's not much to do. 2. Definitely where comfy shoes! 3. Get other people to make your stand so you can just walk to it and all is ready. I know it costs more but trust me its worth the extra. 4. hire bar code scanners. 5. be nice to everyone that comes on your stand. 6. 6 years is a long time for a contact. Not even BT go that long. Our stats show that an average secondary schools with 1300 pupils do an average of 43Mbit per day. This is only going up and up though at the moment. We do put some schools on a 1Gbit bearer with 100Mbit as standard. I'd recommend all secondary schools bar small ones to have 100Mbit. FYI you should be paying about £6,600pa for a 100Mbit/100Mbit leased line on Virgin and about £8,495 for a 100Mbit/100Mbit on a BT based line. We of course do them so feel free to get in touch if we can help. I was just speaking to another potential customer and he was quite surprised at the good pricing we could offer him. It is just not possible to do 1:1 on normal FTTC. There is GEA-FTTC which can give you a 1:1 contention ratio but I believe only up to 20Mbit and this is much more expensive than normal FTTC anyway. Now don't get me wrong a 70Mbit FTTC will normally outperform a 30Mbit leased line (except for the upload of course which is restricted to a max of 20Mbit) but the SLA's as standard are below which are nowhere near a leased line on fibre. FTTC with no EVE (Elevated Best Efforts) - BT will guarantee a speed of 12Mbit for 90% of the time during the busiest 3 hour period. FTTC with EVE - BT will guarantee a speed of 16Mbit for 90% of the time during the busiest 3 hour period. Then there's also the care level which I'd highly recommend putting on A) the phone line and B) the broadband connection. Standard BT Wholesale SLA on the broadband is 24 hour response, 48 hour fix. With Enhanced care that'd reduced to 6 hour response and 24 hour fix. Standard BT wholesale SLA on a phone line (care level 2 is standard) is clear fault by 23:59 next working day. Monday to Saturday only. You can also pay for high care level on the phone lines which are Care level 3 - report by 13:00, clear by 23:59 the same working day.
