also check if they do virus scanning on your mails coming in if you send your SMTP mail via the ISP first and then onto you. Personally I'd recommend using Office 365 or google instead. Dave P.S Let me know if you need a quote for Internet connectivity

hi @RiversideICT, you just need a firewall for the other connection that's also plugged into your local LAN. Give that device an IP address on your local network and make all your computers / PC's etc to have the default route to be this. You can then either put a static route on that firewall saying for traffic to the council network (e.g.10.10.0.0/16) send it to the IP address of the councils current router /gateway. Alternatively put a separate route on all computers to do the same thing. I know which one I'd do though to save time

@dezt such a shame. We are a lot cheaper now than we were as we have some new interconnects and also new pricing from our carriers. We'll always do a price match on a genuine like for like quote from any supplier too. Enjoy your Virgin line! Cheers Dave

In a nut shell yes. The database is very specific to education and we find fantastic to use. If there's a new site then it'll get categorised within 24 hours. All non categorised sites can be automatically blocked. You can of course allow the site yourself as well. Ref MDM, with iPads the only way to get them working is by use of their global proxy. We set the iPads to go to our hosted Lightspeed Rocket infrastructure. All traffic then goes via this connection. This is the only way Apple allows it. Our hosted Lightspeed Rocket infrastructure is connected via multiple 10Gbit links and protected by carrier class Fortinet firewalls. One of the advantages of our service in particular over using onsite proxy servers is that as the Lightspeed Rockets are in our data centres then any bandwidth / speed used happens here and not down your Internet connection. This is left for your schools general use. If you do 1:1 iPad deployment (as many schools are doing) this will help keep bandwidth away from you school which is a good thing. I believe Android + Windows 8 tablets work a little differently. They merely do a lookup against the URL list on the Rockets. The Rocket then allows the site through or not. Thanks Dave

You don't have to have the client installed although we prefer to do it as you don't have to rely on windows server auditing of user logins if you do install it so therefore it's much more accurate. The agent is a piece of cake to roll out via group policy. There's no dynamic filtering. We don't find this a negative though in the slightest. I know many may disagree but for an end user experience there's no difference in actual day to day use. Dave

Sure, it can be done via either a private DSL or 3G which is filtered at a network level. We've done quite a few roll outs of 3G connectivity with our Lightspeed filtering and integrated MDM on Android and Apple tablets. PM me if its of any interest as its not ridiculously expensive. Thanks Dave

You need a decent filtering solution. Perhaps one that also supports Youtube for schools so you can make your own channel and only show videos that you want allowing. We offer this via Lightspeed based filtering solution which is part of our broadband solution. You can also use Fortinet or Smoothwall too. Thanks Dave

I'd agree with this. If you take the firewall out of the equation and the issue stops then it's your firewall doing something. Have you tried looking in the firewall logs too? Dave

who knows. I bet they are not using dialup anymore that's for sure More and more school broadband connections have moved from leased lines to DSL / FTTC. However in the future I suspect more will be moving back to leased lines to guarantee bandwidth as more and more applications become cloud based. Dave

I highly recommend Lightspeed MDM. Although Meraki is good, Lightspeed is specific to the education market so you can easily have different apps for different lessons that teachers can control easily if required rather than IT staff which saves you time.
