The story so far. I'm tending to think that this may be a overheating problem. I put some new thermal grease on the bottom of the cpu heat sink/fan. The PC started up in safe mode, stayed on for a couple of minutes then switched off again. Tried what Kmount suggested with the desk fan. The PC stayed up for about 10 minutes before switching off. Actually did some driver updates. The paste didn't seem to cover very well so I am going to get another tube and apply this. Any other suggestions in the mean time would be greatly appreciated.

It doesn't switch off when its running from a boot disk (ERD). It stays on until I shut it down. It's only when you try to boot from the normal hard drive. It did actually get into windows on a normal start up and I thought that the problem had gone but a couple of mins later it switched off.

Old motherboard was a Foxconn new board a MSI (Vista compatible). Brought PC up in safe mode but as I went to install drivers it switched off again.

I have had to install a new motherboard in my home PC but the trouble is when I boot it up it comes to the point where it asks for safe mode, last known goog config etc, plus a message saying that there has been a hardware change and windows needs repairing. I have tried all these options and they all get so far and then the PC switches off. It don't think it can be anything to do with the hardware because if I boot up from a boot disk (ERD) it will stay up forever. It just when I try the normal boot or to repair from the windows install disk it switches off. The O/S is Vista. Can anyone shed any light on this or should I just reformat the hard drive and try reinstalling everything.

We use Heritage here. The Librarian seems content with it. The DB can screw up every now and then but our Librarian is quite good and backs it up every night. I used Eclipse in my previous school and that seemed ok. Pretty simple to use, it had to be the librarian there was pretty simple. The backup facility was a bit beyond her though.

Not sure what the legal implications are but it only uses one copy of XP or whatever O/S you use. The rep implied that eas all you needed. I thought CALs were machine based. This is only one machine but with 6 logons running simultaneously. I think this is the rather grey area. The company don't normally put the prices on the site but as I mentioned in an earlier post ours will work out at just under £1900 for the 6 screen setup.

The motherboard is a Foxconn 945G/P7MA. The manual actually says - "This motherboard includes four 240-pin slots with 1.8v for DDR2. These Slots support 256mg, 512mb and 1gb DDR2 techmologies for x8 and x16 devices and support a maximum memory bandwidth of 8.5GB/s using DDR2 533 memory. 10.tGB/s using DDR2 667 in Dual-channel interleaved mode. Yo must install at least one memory bank to ensure normal operation" I installed the 533 version.(All four cards).

Forgot to say. The 6 screen setup was just under £1900.

Each user has it's own sound card(usb). There is also a 4 way usb hub per user for keyboard, mice, pen drives etc. Another saving appears to be with software. 1 licence.

There are 4 slots 2 black and to white (creamy).Originally there were 2 512mb cards in there and I wanted to add 2 1gb cards. Making a total of 3gb. The 2 512 cards were in the black slots which all cards fit but neither go into the white ones. I have PC Wizard 2008 on this PC which tells you that all the slots are the same and what type and amount of memory you can have. I trusted this because it got the original 2 correct.

Hi all I have a problem with a PC. I bought some extra memory to beef up a PC but had trouble fitting it in the 2 spare slots. I swapped the new with the existing memory and they went in fine. Now the PC won't boot up, it recognises that the memory is there but it gets so far and hangs. I took those out and put the old back in but that does the same. Tried resetting the BIOS but now I can't even get into that. Can anybody help me with this please?

We are going to buy a 6 screen set up to use in our music department and load it up with some processor heavy programs and see how it performs. (Sibelius, Cubase etc.). It has a quad core processor (E6600), 4gb RAM, 6 19" monitors plus all associated hardware (keyboards, USB sound cards, Graphics cards etc.) all for just over £2k inc vat. If this shapes up well we intent to buy some more.

Hi all Just wanted to know if anyone has had any experience of this product. I had a short trial of it and it seemed quite good but couldn't really give it a good hammering in the short time we had to test it. Here is a link to the site. Good Luck with that, they are a nightmare.

Definitely leave them but be careful how you do it. They kept trying to charge me for their service for a couple of months after I had left. Naturally you refuse to pay for a service you are not using and they handed the dept over to a dept collection ageny (for £35). Fortunately I managed to get it sorted but be warned. The payments and services departments do not speak to each other.

I have just put a new IDE cable in and it's working fine again. Thanks for you help.:-)

Must be in the wrong job. Can't afford any of them.

The drive dissappears completely. I've just checked the BIOS and it's not in there. I haven't tried a new IDE cable yet. I'll will try that later when I have a bit more time. Machine won't even eject, as if no power were going to it.

Do you have the drivers installed on that client machine.

I have a problem with my admin PC. A little while ago the DVD drive disappeared from the system. It just couldn't be seen. After a couple of reboots it appeared again and was usable. It then disappeared completely. Assuming that it was a faulty drive I replaced it with a nice shiny new one. This had been working fine for few weeks, then started being a bit erratic and has now disappeared completely again. Can anyone shed any light on what might be causing this?
