Hi All, Thanks for your help especially Pete who gave me a hint with the path to the exe. I found it on an old backup tape, copied it across and all appears to be well. Thanks again.
-
Thanks all, I've tried re-running the applicationsetup.exe and we have .net 2 but it still fails with the 'File c:\program files\SIMS\SIMS .net\personw.exe does not exist.' Perhaps I didn't explain too well. The personnel application I'm trying to get to run is the old one from the original SIMS Launcher (the one that used the DOS system manager).

Our bursar has been using the old personnel system (the one that runs from launcher) just to get information. Today she tries and gets the message 'File c:\program files\SIMS\SIMS .net\personw.exe does not exist.' Obviously the exe isn't on the c: drive. She reckons she's used it this school year. I ran the September upgrade earlier week. Any ideas whether the September release would have removed the exe, and is there a way I can get hold of, and re-instate the exe - safely? Although I must say I'm very nervous about trying to do it! Thanks for any help

Imagine: Teacher at interactive whiteboard with a group of students around him. He starts to write with the interactive whiteboard pen when the mouse pointer moves slowly away and stops. Hang on the mouse is over on a bench with no-one nearby, what's going on! Teacher moves the pointer back to where he was writing and tries again. Mouse slowly moves again. After four or five goes at this teacher discovers that one kid has tied a piece of cotton to the mouse and is pulling on it !!!! Nice one, makes such a change from the usual vandalism. Anyone got any other amusing happenings?

Since I'm a member of the 'Old Buggas' of ICL (now Fujitsu) I may as well be an old fart too. Ah the heady days of Elliott 903's and 4100's.

Ordered the APC 2200 and if it hadn't been for a delivery firm trying to be too clever and 2nd guessing that being a school we were on holiday, we would have got it next day. Great service. Thanks Simon.

We currently have an APC Smart-UPS 2200. What sort of price would a similar unit cost?

We haven't started yet, but our plan for home access is to use Citrix Secure Gateway into our Citrix/Server 2003 server. The MS Office client licencing issue is a real pain in the nether regions. We are favouring the idea of getting the end user to sign a declaration stating that they posses a suitable MS Office licence for the client PC. Any views on this?

Thanks Chris, unfortunately it's not POE, and I have swopped it with a similar camera in another room, and it works fine in there. It would be a heck of a thing to do, but do you think it might be worth trying to move the mains transformer into the room where it fails?

I have an Axis 210 camera in one particular room which stopped working during half term. I've just got round to trying to fix it, so I've: - Moved its port in the network switch - no joy - Moved it into another room - worked OK - Checked the CAT5e cabling - all connected OK - Tried another camera in the same room - no joy - Tried another device in the camera switch port - OK Any ideas?

Currently I'm keeping it simple with a 450Gb USB hard drive. At present camera settings and schedule mean each camera averages about 5Gb a day, so with 13 cameras I'm going to be running out of space after around 10 days! At the moment we don't have much money, so I'll have to live with that, but I'd like to add a bigger disc - I reckon about 3 weeks seems a good compromise between cost of storage and the number of days generally needed to cover an incident. Can't afford to go to 42 days!!!!!

Has anyone else had the very suspicious e-mail titled 'OFFICIAL WINNING NOTIFICATION. Winnings that are not validated within Twenty-nine working days of winning notification are termed void and invalid. You are required to mention the above particulars of your award in every correspondence to enable the Agent validate your winning. MR.SMITH GRIN E-mail: [email protected] ******************************************************************** The Microsoft Internet E-mail lottery Awards is sponsored by our CEO/Chairman, Bill Gates and a consortium of software promotion companies." If only it was that simple to get money!!!!!!

In the computer rooms we have a total of 13 Axis cameras from 205s to 211s using Milestone Xprotect Professional Milestone - The Open Platform IP Video Software. We bought the initial setup as a 4 camera deal from RM (best available at the time) and it came with Milestone XProtect Basic. We then added 2 more cameras and to overcome the lack of cpu power we installed a second cpu and had to upgrade to the Professional version to support it. Then came 7 more cameras and we were back with with the server processor being maxed out all the time even with the camera frame rate set at 2 per second. I've just bought one of the HP ML115 servers and although I'm still installing the cameras, with 12 installed running at 8 frames/sec the processor is running at around 25% - much better. Unfortunately now I'm going to run into filestore space issues but they're a lot easier to sort than the old processor power one. On the main site we have a bespoke CCTV system which uses DM controllers and a mixture of fixed and PTZ cameras. I don't have much to do with it, but from the parts I have seen I'm not impressed and the maintenace guys are a triffle happy go lucky - I spent a whole day setting up user profiles and passwords, etc. He came in to do an upgrade and didn't save any of it. It was then that I washed my hands of it! Don't forget it's important to get the policies and paperwork established for any CCTV systems. GrumleDook has a very good thread on this in ICT Policies

We are a secondary with a 6th form, and since I'd have to get everybody off the system to run the patch anyway, I ran the May upgrade yesterday afternoon. Still waiting for Admin to check the trial census report to know if all is well. However we now have the Timetable printing problem! "As soon as one door closes behind you another one hits you in the face"
-
I've had confirmation from Capita that if you're a secondary school with a 6th form you need to apply the May upgrade. Although they say they are looking at a patch to 'fix' the faults without having to do the full upgrade. Unfortuntaely that still leaves next to no time before Thursday and it won't get over the old problem of scheduling a session, getting everybody off, etc.!!!
-
Did I read the Capita notices correctly, i.e. on 29th April they said that the May release wouldn't be available until Monday 12th, and yesterday they said the the May release is required for Secondarys for the census on the 15th - just 3 working days to do the upgrade and test/check the data generated. Tell me I'm wrong!!!!

I tried the UPN recon yesterday (after 582 manual updates), got the invalid file as usual. By the way, does anyone know if the Admin Number has to be 6 chars. That's how SIMS stores it, with leading zeros. But when you try to save updated csv file it loses the leading zeros. I've tried all ways; formatting the field as text, custom, etc. but no joy. So if the UPN recon doesn't need the 6 chars it'll save a lot of heartache!
-
Yes, we've been getting the problem for the last 2-3 days. Not exactly sure what it is, but suspect it must be something to do with the moves and the different servers.

On the e-mail front we still have a couple of users who can log-in but can't send e-mail, the majority of users don't have the e-mails which will have been stacking up during the transfer (I could see mail coming in in the e-mail filtering logs but it's not arrived in my mailbox) and nobody has had their distribution lists recovered. I'm fed up with telling users I don't know what's happening or what to expect. Does anyone know what sort of timescales Synetrics are currently working to?

Hi Joanne, Thanks for your response. However I'm looking for schools in Derbyshire with experience of the thin clients so I can get detailed information.
-
I would like to make contact with any schools in Derbyshire who have experience of using thin clients, so I can better understand the pro's and con's. Especially the sort of non-technical information that would support a case with senior management. Thank you.

I'm in Buxton, it woke me up.

We use Groupcall in Derbyshire for reporting attendance back to County. I find SIMS updates never work properly on the Groupcall PC. I have to stop the Groupcall service, run SIMSApplicationsetup and restart the Groupcall service. Seems OK after that.
-
Thanks for your responses. Does the December update have to be run before the Feb one, or can you simply run the Feb one and forget Dec?
-
I've just tried to do the December upgrade and it's failed. As far back as I can recall (at least 2 years) only one upgrade has worked. We always finish up copying files around in the setup/temp and setup folder; running various .exes individually and on a number of occasions SIMS support has had to remote access in to fix the problem. Does anyone else suffer the same? I've raised it with SIMS, but no-one seems to want to try to find out what is wrong with our system to give us such trouble. Thanks.
