  1. For anyone who may have the same problem, we've greatly improved the sound quality by changing the sound setting on the Citrix server from ‘Low Quality’ to ‘High Quality’.
  2. Thanks Ric. It's ICA so I'll go through the settings once I get clear of forgotten passwords and 'lost' work!!
  3. I've got the sound working through headphones by checking the approporiate box in ALSA. However the sound is really badly distorted making it almost useless and I can't find any other settings! Any ideas?
  4. Is there a way to stop users logging in to the domain. The reason for wanting this is that when I'm rebooting I sometimes want to stop users logging on after the reboot until I'm happy that any changes I've made are OK. We are windows server 2003, but we will move to 2008 so will the same solution work.
  5. Thanks guys for all the answers. Plenty for me to go at!
  6. I often get calls like "the printer is not printing and we can't delete the print queue because the prints which are stuck are another users". The printer concerned is a locally connected colour A3 printer. I usually finish having to go down to the PC, log off the current user, log on as admin and delete the 'stuck' prints, then hand back to the user. Is there a way I can delete the printers queue remotely say from a run command, i.e. is there a well known path which will give me remote access to the queue to delete the offending files? TIA
  7. What about laptop trolley with wireless networking?
  8. There are many threads covering all sorts of angles on this, but the range and length of the discussions plus the number offerings in the so-called VLE marketplace has me confused going back to basics about what are we trying to achieve. I pose the question ‘How does/will Ofsted go about ticking the box that says the school meets the VLE requirements’. Here in Derbyshire Kaleidos is the County chosen product, but Kaleidos is in itself a made up of a number of elements. Would one have to use the entire product, or just a part of it to satisfy the powers that be? For example we are planning to give students access to the school systems via Citrix Secure Gateway. Therefore the majority of the subject related material together with their own files will be available to students via this method. Would this get the tick in the box? I can see that there are elements of Kaleidos and many other products which will provide added value such as forums, homework scheduling, alerts, etc. So, would a combination of access to the school network plus some of these added features be acceptable? Am I alone in this? Your views would be much appreciated. TIA

    IP CCTV

Originally the school wouldn't entertain CCTV, they got in a firm which proposed analogue with the result that the cost was too much. However because we were getting a lot of vandalism in computer rooms I bought a package from RM of 4 Axis cameras and Milestone software. We are now running 12 Axis 210 camers using the Milestone software (Milestone - The Open Platform IP Video Software - Home). We are really happy with the system and it's very easy to use. Any software problems we have had have been dealt by the Milestone guys without any fuss. We have had some filestore and performance problems, but we bought one of those HP Proliant ML115 with dual processor and attached an external hard drive for archiving images and all now is OK. We run the cameras from 0830 to 1630 5 days a week. A typical days archive is about 5 Gb per camera. In the meantime the school finally got a CCTV system (analogue). I have little to do with it. It has a web interface which is rubbish. It crashes more often than not simply by changing the number of cameras being displayed, and it's capture of images is really clunky. It uses Dedicated Micros servers and NetVu Observer is the rubbishy web interface.
  10. We have a problem with Cover. The call sequence is as follows: Original call at end Sept: trying to print off cover slips. comes up with an error "object reference not set to an instance of an object." Capita Response: Error: 2089-5763-8600 is a known issue and is with our Escalation team. A fix process of being developed. Capita next: Your case has now returned from our development team and the fix will be included in the November release, unfortunately a patch cannot be provided to resolve this issue. Capita again after we'd applied Nov release 2 and it still failed: Unfortunately this was not fully fixed in November release it has again been sent down to escalation for them to develop a complete fix Capita finally: A developer has looked into this issue and unfortunately it is not fixable by a patch and a fix will be included in the December release of SIMS. Roll-on Xmas!
  11. A student has just brought in his Acer laptop. The cat jumped on the keyboard and the 'J' key broke off! He has the key and has bought the 'bit' that holds the key to the keyboard. It looks frighteningly fragile, so I don't want to force it. Anyone done this and can advise on how to do it? TIA
  12. I had planned to do the upgrade on Tuesday afternoon, but after a rush of blood to the head I decided for the first time to do it remotely from home (you don't get the problem of trying to get all the teachers off the system!). So on Monday evening I started, luckily the V2 package was there so I ran that. It seems to have gone without too much trouble - just 4 or 5 clients didn't upgrade properly so I had to re-install.
  13. Refresh my memory, was this the guy who was talking about the problems of signal overlap and interference?
  14. Just debating when to do the SIMS update. Does the absence of any posts mean it's gone well or no-one's tried it. Any experiences?
  15. For those who are already using this technique, what kit are you using for the transmitter/receivers. I've got prices for the AVE 300 system, the ATP-VA39 , but have no experience of any of this stuff. Any recommendations good or bad? TIA
  16. Our librarian is once again getting on to me about a new printer. She had had one new one and two refurbed ones and they all finish up jamming. As it's the only place in the school where this has happened I can only think that the reason is label printing. She says she has stopped puttting through label sheets that have already had some labels removed, but once again the printer is jamming. This raises a number of questions about what do your libraries do about label printing do you: - use A4 label sheets - use standard printers - use label printers (if so what types) - have any other options TIA
  17. Thanks guys - just need the right handle!
  18. I've been asked to look at these devices. Has anyone got experience of them, pros and cons, suppliers, etc.? TIA
  19. Rather than start a new thread this seemed a good place to raise the problem. We have just installed Ranger Remote Control on a citrix box. In the room that has the student thin clients the teacher PC with tutor installed on it is a fat client. The installation has raised two questions: 1. How do you get RRC to show the client name rather than the user logon name? 2. Is it possible to get RRC to show both thin and fat client sessions? This is primarily so that I can see from my PC what is happening in different classrooms.
  20. Our science department is running the tests in November. It's too late to change our existing fat client setup, but I can see more of these in the future and I'd ike to setup a test excercise. Has anyone got the AQA/RM tests running on thin client (citrix)? TIA
  21. Thanks Ric, Yes, Ranger Remote is a badged version of NetSupport. It raised the question in my mind of whether Sentinel had tinkered with it at all or whether the Sentinel version is behind that of NetSupport. However I did ask the question of NetSupport but they returned the following link which makes no reference to Citrix. NetSupport Technical Document 128 As you can guess I'm trying to increase my confidence by finding someone who has actually used Citrix with RRe. Maurice
  22. I've had some words of comfort about Ranger Remote working with Terminal Services, but I am hoping to get it working with Citrix. Has anyone been successful? If so is there any documentation you can point me at? TIA
  23. We are in Derbyshire and are struggling with the e-mail setup. We can't get the bulk uploads to work. Despite numerous attempts we still get duplicate entries. Having spent hours at it we got a response from the Helpdesk saying we'd have to remove them manually from the upload file. The response included a quote from Synetrix which read: "I know this will be a huge time consuming task but I think this is the only way to progress this call." We are now ploughing through nearly 2K entries checking them! And as for the inability to add or remove students individually well words fail me. I'm not convinced that the move to the new e-mail has been for the best!!!!!
  24. One of the tricks they have applied to 'tricky' problems with me is to open one case. Then they give you somthing to try, if it doesn't solve the problem, maybe just move it on a bit, they close that call and raise another. Looks great on their call to fix times but no good to me. If I recall correctly I had one problem which spawned four calls before it was solved.
  25. Yes, I think this would be useful. Unfortunately we are Derbyshire and I don't think they plan anything.
