I'm going to reconnect every thing on tuesday is there any thing I have might need to do in addition to this I have tried a few machines and they have stayed virus free over night so its looking good as for how the virus got there I have no idea as it arrived before I did thanks for the info
  3. I have just moved jobs to a new school and they have bought cc4 and had RM install it on the servers for them but we have been installing the work stations. This week we have had a problem with a virus infecting the computers before they have a chance to install the antivirus package and get windows updates we are cleaning every computer and server disconnected from the net work and we think we have got rid of the virus but I want to slipstream sp3 in to the wim file on the server as it should help remove the vulnerability of the PC while installing has any one done this. I can find loads of info on making ISO with slipstreamed sp3 but nothing on wim files sorry for the lack of specific info as this has to be a quick post as I have more machines to scan and rebuild!!!

  5. found this email from collins "Hi Alex - sorry to hear you're having problems with this software. It sounds like you may have tried this already but here is a routine that has worked for others that have had problems: Uninstall completely. Remove any files related to Collins Primary at installation directory. Go to the registry (run->regedit). HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> delete the Collins Primary keys. Then install the software again and make sure you use the default location to install to. If you're still having problems let me know and I'll get someone from the development company to give you a call. Best wishes Nathan and this email Dear Alex This application an be configured to any available port. I have attached an installation Guide and a troubleshooting guide. When you install more than one CD-ROM they will update the installation automatically. You can access the installed levels when you logon to the product. If you are still having problems when you have following the attached procedures than I have attached a questionnaire which you can return to us for further support. I hope this answers your query. If not, please reply to this e-mail with any further information your require. 11. Optiplex GX280 - loud fan at start up and amber power light - does not boot - DELL COMMUNITY looks like the recall for gx280'w without warrenty has ended but still available under warenty mine no longer have it, also I have read its easy to replace the dead caps on the mother board (I have not attempted it yet but will be soon) motherboards were going for about £25 on ebay last month but missed the end.
  12. have you tried reseating the cpu and applying new thermal paste I have stacks of gx280s like this all have different problems but do the same super fast fan spinning trick! there was a motherboard recall on this model so if yours isn't too old you might be able to get them out to relplace it even if you are out of warrenty?
  13. I have been having power problems at the primary school I work for we get over voltages at least twice a day on the UPS I was just ignoring it, until I got called on on monday morning by a teacher saying that the servers had exploded ! when I got to the site the ups was off so I turned it back on and stared up the server. I checked with the teacher who had reported the servers exploding and they said that there was a flash, a very loud bang and everything stopped working. the school is just on the edge of the city and the the power has alway been bad is there andy one I can contact to try and get the power stabised or as all big companies do do they have a disclaimer that the quality fo the connection is "as is" and so long as your getting some then tough? I know most electrical products have tolerances to low and high voltages but to do this to the UPS then whats it doing to the other computers and switches I can't have a UPS for them all ?
  14. I couldn't get access from about 12:00 till after 1:00 today I assumed it was our broadband connection was stressed but if some one else is have in problems I guess its not?

  17. There was a job advertised at a school a near me doing exactly the same thing Im doing now on £3000 more than I'm on so I applied. Got an interview and everything went well they asked me to hang around for a while while they disscussed the interviews, everyone else was sent home so I thought I had the job, one of the interveiwers came out ten minutes later and told me they had decided to readvertise and that they felt I was over qualified, that I would be moving on with in the next 5 years or quicker to a network managers job. So I didn't end up getting the job with this in mind I spoke to HR abouth this fact and asked how this would effect me though pay and (de)gradeing the answer was well it waas up to you school to allocate you to a job profile and that the person working at the other school would be loosing pay to come down to the level that I am at now. I have spoken to other school and found out this is not the case so get ready for the appeals process when ever that arrives as it was due on the 22nd but havn't heard anything yet It is Ideally by council but depends on the delgate at your school putting your job against the right job profile in my case it was the bursar. what does they know about the job I do I don't even work at the same site as them
  18. I have used different brands of gbics in net gear switchs there are a few things to look out for main thing is voltage of the gbics there are 2 different voltages that they work at, can't remember the different values but I checked in the switch manuals before i tried them. The second is the manufacturer they all tend to be made by 2 or three manufacturers finisar being the one I tend to use and have worked with almost every switch I have tried them in but reselling companies put there own brand on them so its hard to tell who has made them. Linksys seem to work well ( with netgear, planet, levelone and 3com. The only switch manufacturer I have had problems with is the newer hp switches which will only use there own Gbics. Gbic is suppost to be a standard interface but has its revisons like USB but manufactures don't always stick to the spec.
  19. I Used Linksys (now badged as cisco small buisness) gigabit unmanaged switchs for 3 primary schools and have had all of them fail (within warenty period admitted 2 years) sent first few back to netherland at £20 each postage and had them replaced with new after but took about a month to come, out of 12 switches 1 is still working. we have replaced them with hp procurve 1800s and they are ace
  20. if you renemed the laptop the same name that was in active directory in the right ou disjoin the laptop delete the machine acount on the server and rejoin to domain should recreate the sid and will then pull down group policy for machine
  21. We had a tower computer once built buy some random company bought before i started work for the school and it developed a problem like that but it would only boot if you pressed your finger on the top left corner of the case? There was nothing near where you had to press only the cd drive we had a an idea that it was an earth problem and when we touched it we earthed ths case we changed power supply but there was no difference spent weeks on it and ended up chucking it. A few weeks later another 2 computers did the same thing we ended up swapping everything out of another same type computer and it was never fixed it always had the same problem ended up telling staff to stand with there finger on the tower while it booted up and replaced them as soon as we had the cash. Dosn't help much but could make some stickers tilt until booted
  22. we have a frog VLE not sure what version we are on but the email side of is not great no pop3 access to mail. staff love it but its not problem free I would speak to some one who administrates it before jumping in I only use it for my school email and vpn access If you are interested I can ask some one who works on it all day to contact you If you would like

  24. hi I have refurb'd a few of those by giving them a good blow out with compressed air and removing the colour correction film from the 3 lens's in front of the lcd screens the glue that sticks the colour correction film on to the lens discolours with the heat once removed they look much brighter but the colour is sligtly out hard to notice when watching dvds but you can tell with a white backgound in active primary If you want rid of them I might be able to pay for the postage and as I could use them as spares for the Primary Schools I work at ?
  25. I have a few of the hl-4040cn and it eats toners compared to the hl-2700 it replaced just looking this morning at refilling the toners ourself as we did with the HL-2700 https://www.tximedia.co.uk/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1125 have started stocking the refills or you can get them to refill the toners for you but I find you tend not to get your own back and end up having problems so i do it my self dead easy and hardly any mess the unit is basically a hopper so there its just pour in the toner and replug This makes the printer about a third less to run. Also re setting the drum and belt counter errors until you get acutal printing problems can save cash as they are on a counter and don't always represent the acutal condition of the part but brother dont recomend any of this and will proberbly void your warenty mine is over a year old so i have no problem abusing it ;-)
