When I see women my age dressing in very 'revealing' clothes and then whacking on a pair of 3D Glasses and calling themself "Geek" to make them seem less of a --.. that's when I know it isn't a positive term. Back OT though: I get called various, I never actually know which one I am - I suppose really we should just consider ourselves another supercalafragalisticexpialadoshus sentence but with all names relating to 'Geek/Nerd' in it instead. I would say it is a positive term now, especially as society have finally realised we're not all trolls who have basements for bedrooms and refuse to utter a single letter out of our mouths to people we come across. sorryifthisisinthewrongsection Hi all, I've been in my job just over a year now and I've absolutely loved it, and this place has been a great help too - lovely bunch! Anyway, enough of the brown-nosing. I've been really keen to learn more about general networking and working with Windows Server in more depth because I'm looking to progress further in my career and the more practical aspects of IT/Network support level is where I'd like to be in the future. I simply haven't got the time to do any of these fancy (albeit expensive) courses right now though, but I don't want to just sit back and leave my skills sunbathing on my current college-leaver/junior bench. (Some may think I'm being naiive/stupid because I'm only 19 and a newbie to this industry, but that's the stereotype I'm trying to break out of. I want to progress) I've considered getting hold of a basic PC and maybe a Server 2008/2012 OEM disc and doing some sort of test lab at home - would that be a good option? And could anybody point me in the right direction to some useful guides/materials? (a bit like the self-paced training kit things you can get for the Microsoft exams) I'd appreciate any input/suggestions thanks.

Thanks for your input everyone, I will try Robocopy and see how she gets on with it. Yeah, it's encrypted. It was me that put the order through for it we make sure any External HDD we buy has hardware encryption on it, mainly because some of the staff here can't be trusted to keep a standard one safe. Yeah, we're very lovely Unfortunately they refused to buy one of those fancy ones with the keypad/code entry thing on them though, I would've loved to have a play with one of those. Blast

Hi all, Our SENCO woman has asked me if there was a way she could backup her External HDD to a folder as she now has a Deputy SENCO role that's not long been filled and they need to share files. She told me that at the other school she works at they gave her a batch file that just copies the drive to a directory somewhere. I knew about XCopy already, which is what I assumed she was on about, and was half-way doing the command line for it until I noticed there's also something called Robocopy.exe So just asking: Which is better/which one should I use? I looked at the robocopy.exe /? and there's a great big list of flags compared to XCopy but I've got no idea which one I'd be better off using. If anybody can tell me I'd appreciate it, or if they know of any better solutions I'd appreciate that too.

We're still XP/2003 here (roughly 150 clients for the lot, that includes laptops/netbooks.) Originally the plan was to upgrade to 7/2008R2 but then my boss decided after dealing with it/setting it up at his other schools it was "a sack of $h1t" and didn't want to do Windows 7 - then of course 8 was released, so the next plan was to upgrade to that (which wouldn't have gone smoothly as we'd already bought Server08 and not 12) - now my boss has decided that Windows 8 is too "hand wavey washy/touch-screen related and all the important bits we need are hidden away" and so he's reluctantly decided to go back to upgrading to Windows 7. Don't know if I'm coming or going! To be honest I think the only reason we've been on XP for so long is because it's just so 'graphic-y' and kid friendly. When you have pupils that don't even know their surname, keeping it kid-friendly is a vital thing to have (I should point out we're a small primary.) We should hopefully be upgrading to Windows 7 at the start of the summer term, or we will do it during the summer hols. Though we've had our copy of Server 2008 since last summer and we've only just started migrating tic-tac chunks (I say we, I mean my boss. me no allow touchy )

Had a bit of light snow here but it stopped very quickly; apparently I'm "Scrooge" because I wasn't getting all excited about it and that was from staff, bloody mean. We've had a warning from the Met Office for heavy snow tomorrow early morning. Hopefully it'll be before the school opens

Not odd at all, yes you do! Weren't you given any prompts about proxy settings when setting it up? (just curious, it's been ages since I used WSUS) If the proxy's in WinHTTP that's all you should have to do.. otherwise I'm out of ideas.

That may be well and true, but HMV doesn't have f***ing annoying shoppers who randomly stop right in front of you - or think their trolley is a go-kart that can magically go through people!!! (Yes, I am an online shopper.) Sad to see HMV go down to this but I could see it coming. Their prices weren't at all reasonable (bar a few bits and bobs) and as has been said, they weren't keeping up with the digital times. I expect our store in Gloucester will suddenly get the bargain bunch rolling in. When our Comet store was closing, people were coming from the Forest of Dean just to buy printer paper. LOGIC!

If I remember right it's something to do with duplicate SusClientIDs, the conflicts mean they won't appear on the console. (It might be something else but it sounds it's most likely this issue, though I'm sure one of the veterans will correct me if I'm wrong!) Can't say I've used it for the best of 4 years now, and even before that I rarely went on it. At least the world will be ridden of that annoying "DOO DEE DOO!" sound everytime you get a message.. unless EduGeek decide to upgrade their PM system. OH GOD *runs for the hills* I think this was wayyyyy too late to happen anyway, it was ruined after Windows Live 2009 (and even WLM was pants.) - It's like when all the teenies went through the Bebo to Facebook transition, MSN is 'sooooo last year!'
