Yes, we use Puremessage AV and anti-spam, I think the argument is that with epals staff will have control over where pupils can send messages - only within our school users group, to other schools and outside of epals (though chrb thinks this it may not be possible to send outside epals and I can't find any info on the site to counter this)

I'm not, Head of IT is................... Basically her reasoning is epals is free, has AV and Spam filters built in and in fully controllable - more so (and, I believe, easier) than Exchange.

I've been asked by our head of IT to look into using epals (schoolmail) for pupils here. I'm reluctant to introduce another system as we have Exchange installed which is currently used by staff and sixth form (Rest of school pending) and management use our LA e-mail system. Does anyone have any experience of using epals schoolmail? (apart from chrbb - thanks for reply)

1 NM (me) and 1 tech asst for approx 500 machines (inc 100 laptops) 7 servers, 25 aironets, split site (2 miles apart), 1200 pupils and approx 120 staff. I also teach 4 hours a week (was 8 hours) and do first aid.............. I managed to get requirement for an additional technician mentioned in the inspection report a year ago, I'm still waiting............

Similar here, I negotiated the regrading though, it helped that U had an interview lined up elsehwere (for a £26k+ job) and that I do some teaching here. We're currently going through JE, I hope it'll help my techies pay (but not affect mine!) as it's shockingly bad

Thanks for that, I'll look into it more tomorrow. On the face of it as a penpals tool it seems good, as an e-mail tool (which I think she wants), not so.........

@chrbb - have you actually used epals, if so how do you find it? I've just had an e-mail from head of IT who wants to use it in school. Not sure why as we've budgeted for exchange for all pupils from next year!

We use the free version of Ilient here and are very pleased with it, it allows users to e-mail requests in or go to a web page and fill in a form. I'm hoping to buy the full version next year with asset management and other modules.

I use Sophos in school, and on my home PC. I agree it can be resource intensive (SAVservice is using 46MB on my home PC, but can be significantly more on the console server in school!), but I have few issues with it, and have found support to be good on the rare occassion I need it. And yes, it's legal to use at home as it's licenced (as standard for free) for home use by education staff. Haven't used anything else for years so can't really compare

That is a lack of planning on the teachers part, and it is most definitely not your job to plan/teach. Also, why is someone teaching IT if they can't actually do it??

@halfmad - agree with all you say. @pete - I'd have a chat with your union rep. It's one thing to advise, and assist, but to write teachers lesson plans is taking their workload agreement to far!!

Thanks Nick (and others!), I've had a chat with the dep head and we're going to discuss this with the prefects and head of sixth form.
