Storing backups on the same SAN as the original data is bad. But this ^ is the kick in the balls. Report states the firmware was out for weeks - if it was out for weeks from say 1st Jan I wouldn't be scheduling in the upgrade until the half term anyway as I'm not able to be onsite out of hours when sufficient downtime can be planned for during term time. And the they sensibly bought enhanced support when buying the 3PAR but did HP come to them in 2015 and said we now do this better support, give us money. Bet they didn't. The rest of it, ok get your backups in order but they haven't put a fair enough amount of blame at HP's door in my opinion.

Its the use of the 3 core & earth that is confusing in this situation for me. I don't want to suggest something that will burn your house down. As @Seb1780 says it's a job for someone with the knowhow. My next question was going to be what cable is visible at the lights. The twin + earth or 3core +earth? From the pictures of the lights it looks like neither. Then that last light switch pic complicates matters further - it looks like L1, L2 and COM are in use which as seb1780 says means there's more than one switch in the circuit. Hi all, Currently the school has their servers in location A. In there, there is also our ISP connection and a few links to some of our edge switches. There is also a link to location B (only 8 cores) where the servers used to reside. In location B there are fibre links to around 16 cabinets. There is a mix of fibre grades, at least one OM1, some OM2 & some OM3 from location B to the edge. What I would like to do is put in a bigger fibre from A to B and patch all the edge switches currently going to location B back to location A so I would be operating more of a star network. If I put in an OM4 48 core link from A to B, would it be backwards compatible with the OM1, 2 & 3 links or would I have to match each of the grades currently coming into the cabinet? Thanks

LGfL will pretty much always want to give you a 255.255.248.0 IP range at the most although they might not think you're big enough for that range. As for changing the network range that is probably a certainty with the LGfL. They operate clients on a 10. range so if you currently use 192.168 or 172. addressing internally you will definitely have to change. If you're currently on a 10. range it may be that your internal addressing is used by another LGfL school. I have had the "we can't give you addresses without proper justification" response from them. We were running out of addresses on our BYOD range and there response was literally change your DHCP lease to a shorter time. There shouldn't be an issue with them giving you a stub network. And smaller random IP addresses from across the range. ie 10.212.64.0 255.255.255.0 for admin 10.188.185.0 255.255.255.0 for voip etc. My point being they definitely don't have enough clients to have saturated their IP addressing and not have enough smaller subnets to meet your needs. Hopefully that makes sense EDIT: Forgot to add that my advice would be to get a leased line or alternative provider. You will almost certainly save money unless you are going to use all the services the LGfL offers. Also find out what they are going to do to secure your SIMS share. If its just permissions I'm sure you do that already. Good luck

Whilst this is useful, the last time I used it, it didn't mean that there was SSO for the LGfL's webmail system. The users it was making were auser3 in AD but LGfL use auser3.319 (319 being the DFE no for the LA the school is in)

You have an EES agreement, with the EduDesktop pack @ about £30 per FTE staff???? If so, that should include the Client OS (Win 10 or below upgrade), Office 2016 or below ProPlus, and CoreCAL. CoreCAL includes Windows Server 2012 CAL, Exchange Server 2013 Standard CAL, Skype for Business Server 2015 Standard CAL, SharePoint Server 2013 Standard CAL, System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager Client Management License, and System Center 2012 R2 Endpoint Protection. So are you sure you don't already have the correct CAL on your agreement. Unless you are referring to CAL costs of SQL for SCCM. If so there are no CALs needed for SQL specifically used for SCCM.

Yes I agree with the above. The CALs allow you to manage desktops and users. ie WSUS to staff desktops, rollout FMS to users in your Finance OU, imaging non-server OS. But as soon as you start managing server operating systems - ie having SCCM manage windows updates on a server OS, or Endpoint protection on a Server OS - then you need to buy server management licenses as an additional product on EES. Or more simply with DPM, back up a server - need a DPM server ML. Back up a client desktop need a DPM client ML (included in the Enterprise CAL).... I THINK @Fazza - with MS licensing I always say 'I think'. I really would be shocked if the guy that makes MS licensing up could explain it coherently. And if what I say above is wrong it only means paying less £££

If the SQL is on the SCCM server and is purely for SCCM to function (ie doesn't do SIMS at the same time) then its free EDIT - it's not free, its included

Can you tell me why you think it's free? I get the Core CAL part has the Client Management Licenses and the core cals are included with a EduDesktop agreement so most schools have this already. But the System Centre Server license (which is a general purpose license that may cover one of Config Manager, Data Protection, Operations Man) - more specifically the Server management license is an additional product on EES and is licensed as standard or datacentre per 2 processors. Would love if I'm wrong but I understood it to be this way.

Sounds like a subnet problem as said above. Places to check 1. Server running the controller. Is the subnet there correct. -also can recommend running on a small linux vm. Runs all the time without service tinkering and is apparently more reliable 2. In the controller config there is a Networks setting. It puts in a default subnet and gateway. May not be related. Do the aps before adoption show an ip. Is it on the first 254 ips or the second set? Just some late night ideas

If you haven't done it already move PARS/Insight to a different server all together. SIMS SQL will hog up all the memory in most cases and the PARS/Insight webserver won't get a look in. Can't remember all the steps but it wasn't too difficult. Just like doing the installations again but on a different server.

Hi, it's kicked off a bit here so struggling to find time for a comprehensive response. What subnets are these on? Roughly how many devices on each range? (This paragraph could be wrong but..)Looking briefly at your switch models they are all only layer 2. You need at least one layer 3 switch at your core to act as a router between your switches. Are these switches all located centrally? The LGfL need to be aware of every subnet on your network that you want internet access through. My first basic idea would be 1. Get your new POE switch, layer 3 capable and use it as the core switch. 2. VLAN your curric as (for example) VLAN100, admin as VLAN200 3. Get a new stub network on VLAN300 from the LGfL to service your school owned WIFI clients 4. Get a further stub network on VLAN400 for guest wifi if that's useful. 5. Do away with your 2 8 port switches(or use them as some sort of storage array only link for failover etc). 6. Your new core switch will be able to be configured with ACL to not allow traffic from VLAN300 to Admin, VLAN400 only to internet etc. This would be a good start. Further tasks could be vlans for printers - these don't necessarily need internet access so could be done without begging the LGfL for new subnets.

Maybe so you have a bit of knowledge before engaging a consulting firm you could post up your current switch layout (ie Visio diagram) and the model numbers of what you've currently got so we could give you some pointers and things to ask the consultants about. From my experience of being in your situation proper knowledge of what ports are connected to what devices, ie knowing your printer is on port 15 of switch 2 so that it can be properly untagged on the printer vlan is an essential part to the planning. And with school budgets as they are if your switches are capable of VLANing then use them. Then once you've proven the VLANing works upgrade your switches (unless of course you need upgrades to POE as part of the wireless rollout). As a London school are you an LGfL school? And if not are you restricted by your ISP as to which internal IP addresses are used (eg for filtering)? And more out of curiosity are you buying the recently bought by Fortinet Meru kit or original Fortinet wireless? The Meru stuff can use tunneled vLans so only the controller has to be tagged rather than every single AP.

I use security groups. The way we do it is also manually create an account for each department. That account (using the security setting of the account) is only given to the corresponding group. Our staff have no individual user budget. They can only use a department account. Staff are added to the correct AD security group on creation by script (or manually with a role change like becoming SLT). Let me know if you need more info.

Also, don't know how often you can do this but when you go over your user count you usually have 45 days to rectify. I've always rectified so don't know if you can go over next term for another 45 days for example.
