Batteries do discharge over time, moreso if they are full. It will keep its charge longer if charged to 50%. I think you may just have to charge it before use as this is not unheard of behaviour from certain types of battery. You could also try keeping the battery disconnected which should isolate it from any leaks in the laptops power system and make it stay charged longer but it will always suffer this degredation, Its not NiCad after all.

Voting systems, there was $4k well spent. 5-6 uses total and now its that old the batteries are dieing, the cupboard mimios, the projectors used as fancy lights. Its not even training, they get that. Its a case of them bothering to use product X that they wined about for months in their classroom.

64bit to everything, better drivers and a single type of drivers, no more messing getting dirty old 32bit printer drivers shoehorned into 2k8 server. It also uses the CPU better but does use up a little more RAM in memory.

Sony and their classic 'quality', probably a bundled driver causing issues. Look for a GPU and Flash update, Flash attempts to use GPUs for acceleration and it not unknown for hosing it completely. You can try disabling GPU acceleration in Flash too or using IE10 which has built in flash and is less likely to chew the system. Chrome also has built in flash if you can stand it.

Lets hope for an MSI or WSUS update not the usual hoop jumping rubbish from MS with their new stuff for old platforms.

Cloud is not 'the way forward' its just another type of solution usually poorly suited to schools with small budgets and shocking, slow, unreliable, non-redundant internet connections. Even with 'good internet' would you prefer you file server to have a 1-20GB dedicated connection or to share a comparatively tiny 2-100mbit connection. No brainer really unless you only deal with basic unformatted text with no images.

RFID is just some passive electronics and a big coil of wire, should be good to at least a couple of hundred degrees centigrade UHF RFID Heat Resistant Near Field Tag , 260-300 for 15 min, if the tank is in that for 15min you are not going to need to refill it, I'd go the RFID route as it is proximity based, long range ones and a scanner by the filler.

Grrrr, why does every *nix vendor go out of their way to break support for Hyper-V. There are kernel extensions, which they exclude and integration components (now up to 3.4) which are never included. Trying to sort out some internet connection load balancing and fault tolerance. We use Hyper-V and it works great with Windows and even Ubuntu. Try something like ClearOS or Zeroshell and your limited to legacy adapters because they have purposefully broken the kernel for Hyper-V synthetic networking. Why does *nix insist on locking stuff out at the kernel level, have they heard of drivers, they are this cool new thing that lets you use non 'sainted' hardware. Sure I can spend another hour or so figuring out how to recompile the kernel and another day cleaning up the mess that makes of the rest of it thanks to the update but it does make you appreciate drivers. My question is why they go so far out of their way to break support for a platform, I can only attribute it to malice at this point.

VirtualBox will do, VirtualPC if your only using Windows.

Yea Smoothwall does do all that stuff, but only in the pay for versions.

pfsense is rubbish with PPTP traffic so if anyone uses that then avoid it. There are others like ClearOS Community Edition | Software Router/Bridge Linux Firewall and Untangle: Network Policy at Work are also good choices that can handle protocols a bit better and include stuff like WAN load sharing.

Have you tried disconnecting the keyboard then trying to boot it, if it has a firmware update that it is trying to apply to the keyboard controller it may fail and hang up the hardware. Have had this before and ended up needing a new keyboard as the chip on it was toast.

Use it at one site and Ruckus at another, both are decent, Aruba is much easier to upgrade - three clicks instead of a month long treasurehunt to get access to the mythical firmware which then still has pre-reques and unsupported upgrade paths. Have found the Ruckus hardware to be a bit more robust given adverse power conditions though, the Aruba stuff can get a bit tetchy if it does not get is daily dose of cherryohms, good breakfast and all that. Signal wise the Ruckus owns the Aruba kit but they both have their good and bad points.

Halo 4 was good, campaign had a decent storyline if a bit short and multiplayer is frenetic. Prefer MW titles for online though.

As above, schools are a varied bunch and sometimes it takes a bit of time and work to figure out the systems, both technical and political to see where any roadblocks are located. Anyhow, welcome to the forum.
