Have you tried completely removing the AV and rebooting, some - eset - can and will happily kill all network traffic if they get provoked and need to be uninstalled entirely then put back on.

I don't think it is any of our views that they just work but it is the view of the people who push for and buy them, largely thanks to the amount or misinformation that gets fed about them. At least it seems to have worked its way through that managing pcs is a good idea, iPads, that whole half the investment thing is left out in favour of 'but its what plants crave'.

Yeap, we use them and they are great, quiet, quick and small with vPro. We have a bunch of them and have had no issues with them. We are running Windows 8.11 but they were 7 when shipped so should run both, I'd put 8 on though as I love the 5 second cold boot time. We standardised on their predecessor the Elite 8000 through 8300 series and they (largely the same hardware) have been great also. I think we have had one or two stuffed PSUs over a hundred or so machines in four years and that's about it.

And generally their own device, sorry MS we don't all live in the US where you can buy a tablet for three dollars fifty. Here and I'm sure there, in the poorer areas there is no way the families could afford that. The other route is school owned BYOD which is not really BYOD anymore and the funding for that does not exist unless, like Google here you have a charity that backs them and works out a big hire purchase deal for Chromebooks. If MS is going for this model they have already all but lost it. Every school that has done 1:1 around here that I know of has gone chromebooks, the hardware is junk, the OS is slow but they are manageable and thanks to that and some - I'm sure - 'scrupulous' dealing with the MoE and its OSS zealot advisors GAPS and chromebooks rule here. We have gone 365 in several schools and are trying to go for the MS tablets - as they are faster, more varied uses, better integration with existing systems - but it is a loosing battle, GAPS now has Classrooms for free where as you need to build everything from scratch in sharepoint on 365. They have chromebooks that can be managed for all apps and can login to their school account rather than having to create a separate liveID for every student if we wanted even free apps.

Hmm, but you don't need to buy SCCM to install an application on a couple of computers without touching them and computers at least have the assumption that some infrastructure may be required. iPads 'just work' which is complete rubbish and because of that all these costs are not put forward at all to begin with. Also you expect a tool to be able to do its job at least a little, Apples MDM is junk and can barely make a dent in the configurability anyway even if it does work that one day or so. You also don't need to go and buy a bunch of very specific hardware then layer on more and more management just to get the basics. You get Windows Server and with AD it manages Windows clients, if it does not do something you want it to you can script it. Apple is different, like a Porche dealer, every little thing is extra and if your really lucky they will charge you double for a version with all the features stripped out that's 'cooler'.

I have had the exact same conversation, and this one... Them: We need to have App X and iPads Me: Why? Them: Because school Y uses App X Me: If school Y paid $500 per pupil to jump off a bridge...

Which makes it doubly sad that it is required in the first place to make the devices usable with metro apps, what's the other option, 600 years of manual creation and meddling with liveIDs or reimaging every device every time you want a new app. I like the tech, but its like there was no thought put into anything other than the marketing agenda and its a long road back to a usable system.

Just waiting on my second IBM SAN, its smaller around the DS3500 size connected by SAS and apart from the IBM software being insane in size (like 4GB for a simple config and monitoring tool) the original unit has been good after a few initial hickups. The secondary controller would not update and required a new flash module. The next one is replacing an old HP MSA 2012i which is now slow in comparison. Went with ibm as we can actually get that here in NZ, it was the most cost effective - cutting 1/3 off the hp price - and had a lot of the extras like easy-tier (ssd cache) for free. The new one, when IBM ships all of it should have a couple od SSDs then the rest fully populated with near line SAS for massive storage capacity with rather decent speed. IBM's support can be a massive PiA though as you need to navigate through their usually half broken site to find the appropriate filing cabinet in the appropriate basement to file your support request in but they do get back to you and seemingly have people who actually know a bit about the products. Have not dealt with the others but thought anecdotal input was better than none at all.

Nice find, I think the thing to watch out for is the install location may be cached on the client so if it needs to do a repair or per user config it can still fail out as it will try referencing the old location and prompting constantly for the new location.

Tried that multiple times and could not get past it in the NZ or US region. Someone else said that if you add the step of setting up iCloud first it may then allow that hack but that is getting up into the half hour or more per account. A huge time sink. No proxy, but their is some weird filtering in play, this is New Zealand so the junk that flies here would not be tolerated in many countries. Still, nothing else has a problem and iPad apps still take hours to install on our 100Mbit fibre. Perhaps not the apple team themselves but rather the team of technology illiterate ex teachers who make their living showing off the 'revolution' of apps instead of teaching. These are probably the same people who let TV raise their children as it is the same kind of mentality. These people will lobby and convince with no regard for setup, possibility or legality and should be made to pay greatly. As to the amount of problems, you are right, there seem to be hundreds and half of them are to do with Apples greedy politics, the other half are technical as their aversion to the error message that makes problems solvable and their shoddy work on OSX Server just make it hell. The little brand new top spec mac mini is crawling and takes a couple of seconds to open a new tab on safari, it has just run its required upgrades and had configurator and Server installed on it. Its like a Windows 98 box that has been running for seven years and it has only been, at best 7 months. Shockingly bad, I don't know how people find Apple products even tolerable if this is even remotely usual. I should not have to do a full reinstall for an Os hotfix or even a point revision. Windows 8 - 8.1 went fine and that is a stack more complex driver wise.

Good to hear it works for someone, Configurator can't even manage to enter our WiFi properly, have to add that manually after supervision, have checked everything even in the actual XML of the profile that gets pushed, the key is right it just refuses to use it. Utter junk - apples config tools - the whole way through. It makes me yearn for Windows NT4 which at least made a passable attempt at being manageable.

I am so done with Apple stuff... I tried but it is unmanageable junk. After months of juggling just to get a hold of A working VPP account and some credit to go on it plus struggling to keep their flimsy pile of simpering junk they call a 'Server app' going they have pulled yet more stupidity. After generating the third token for the VPP to get Profile manager fired up again and running another pile of updates on the now snail pace - brand new - Mac mini, seriously I don't know how something with the spec it has can go that slow. They now have a nice little game where you can no longer create an iTunes id without adding money of some sort, not even with the hack. So to use it you have to waste half your budget on iTunes cards that ideally will never be used as it should all go through their barely working VPP. Share an AppleID... sure that used to work but now even VPP push requires a signing on each app even when pre signed in via a backup so back to square one after about $2000 worth of folly. If I ever get handed another stack of iPads I will straight up walk out rather than deal with them. Working with them is literally not worth employment.

A few places have been talking about real time programing apple seems to have got something out the door first. Looking forward to the hopefully lower costs and higher avalibility of home automation stuff now apple are involved I just hope for everyone's sakes they have not got the whole lot ties up in patent knots to ruin it for everyone else.

Yea, was on a phone and don't deal with Dell gear so had no idea of the age, all the ones I have setup have had the appropriate drivers going back a fair way though so never considered it. Glad the OP has found a solution, I know there are some pro grade - firepro ? - cards that can do quad head output that someone was using in Multipoint setups but if the motherboard is a pig then it may not have worked with it anyway.

Not sure I understand the question, why is disabling onboard a requirement, I have windows 7 machines running eight moniters using onboard and three dual head gpus, why not just leave it enabled and uses a dual head card or use onboard as well for three. You are right USB is terrible and even with displaylink and usb3 it is still never going to be as good as onboard let alone discreet.

@jamesbmarshall you say that MS has heard feedback about actual app deployment will be worked on 'soon', what real timeframe is there on that 'soon' as 8 has been out for some time and had several large updates so far non of which has fixed this major flaw. We are pushing out Windows 8.1 everywhere at the moment and it is better than 7 but we may well have the purchase of a couple of classrooms worth of MS tablets blocked and have to go for a different brand entirely as we can't wait. This may well lead to MS tablets never being used in that school as they will already be on a different path. Personally I like the W8 tablets and they can work well but I am not sure MS understands how badly they are doing themselves over with the lack of real management tools to make this work.
