What about Google Apps or Live@Edu both free of charge for Education and sit outside of the LA?

We are considering moving to Google Apps for web-based email, etc, and wondered whether anyone has experience of using Google Sites as a VLE?

Sylv3r, do you host your SLG then as our Internet is neither quick enough nor reliable enough to suggest our teachers use the SLG instead of SIMS .net?

They are not comparable in my opinion. The SLG is for sharing documents, attendance, behaviour, etc, with staff and parents whereas Emerge is an App for read-only student and staff data with it's real use being to take Registers.

Android is the way to go....... much more flexible....... (but that's because I can't afford Apple lol)

We are currently trialling Groupcall Emerge on a couple of iPods which are being favourably received by our PE department. However, they would get real benefit by using the App on a smartphone (iPhone or Android) so it can be used out on the playing fields and offsite at sports fixtures. I have seen Broadcom's offering too and see this could be a great replacement for the SLG as well as being viewable on any device with a browser. You pay extra for the App versions. I am undecided whether to recommend Emerge in the short term until we decide upon the Broadcom solution.

Next they'll be using Publisher to make web pages. Aargh!

Hi In the past, I have endeavoured to install SOLUS 3 and hence SIMS to ALL workstations across the school site. This has been handy when Teachers wanted to do some SIMS training in a classroom, etc. however, whenever I wish to roll-out the next deployment I am having to send it to all workstations at the same time (and cause havoc in some areas). Does anyone know of a way, if possible, to deploy the updates to targeted workstations in order that I can do the update on a phased-basis? Thanks Graeme

Yes, we use Pugh and they have been helpful, particularly in providing me with a list of everything we've ever bought from them. Useful for cross-referencing licensing against what;s actually installed.

Ask them to try using a different browser to establish whether it could be the cookies issue you suggest.

We use Spiceworks (FOC) to scan the network and provide an inventory of devices, including HDD's, and software, etc.

We use wireshark, nagios, observium, spiceworks, etc. to see what is happening across the network. In terms of checking speed of the network, I don't think you can beat using a stopwatch to time a user experience, i.e. logging on to the network and opening a word document! We do this across different parts of the school site and using wireless and wired connections on the same device.

My experiences in different schools and authorities is such that Primary schools were early adopters and Secondary schools didn't have the time or resources to make a VLE work for them. In schools where they 'successfully' use a VLE, it is only being used by the ICT dept to host worksheets for the OCR National course. My current school has it on their SIP however, I am trying to steer them towards using Google Apps (at no cost) for Email, Calendar and online collaboration, etc.
