KDE has a kiosk mode which is great for locking machines down. I imagine Kubuntu has this although I've never used it so YMMV. Kiosk mode certainly works well on Fedora. If you look at alternative desktops, such as IceWM you can control exactly what is available to the user, mostly because IceWM has less features than KDE, etc. Don't be put off by that statement; I use IceWM on my machine at home, in preference to KDE as I find KDE4 too bloated. However, I do run KDE apps.

I've got a fake 50p. It's exactly the same shape and size and a real coin, but completely lacks any design. It came out of a parking meter, which is why it was made I guess. The 1 and 2 cent coins were abolished in Australia in the 1990s due to inflation reducing their value, and the high cost of bronze. The actual coins were used to create the bronze medals for the Sydney Olympics. When there were abolished, they was a huge amount of uproar as they figured shops were ripping you off, but we quickly got used to it and worked the system to our advantage. I used to by three bottles of milk from the corner shop and if I got them as a three, it got rounded up, where as if I paid for two and then said that I would take another, both got rounded down, so I was ahead.

We do and most of the staff use it extensively, although as with any system there are degrees of competence. Some go the whole hog and only accept work submissions through it, and mark student's work in it too (proper paperless courses), while others just use it as a dumping ground for resources (like a networked mounted directory). This year SMT really pushed paperless courses. There was a pilot to run more of them, and teachers who signed up got an iPad. Drop out of the pilot, and the iPad was taken away. SMT monitored this pilot very closely and the paperless courses will continue. There is a push to encourage staff to do more and cleverer things with it, and we have some moodle mentors who teachers can contact for assistance. The mentors run workshops too. Takeup of the workshops has been very poor, as has teachers contacting the mentors. I think this is going to change; I've heard there will be a compulsory session at the next inset day. Most teachers come and ask me about moodle problems, as I am sysadmin. I keep pointing out, that I don't actually use moodle and they are better off seeing the mentors but still they come. My first school have one. It bypassed the LEA so it was useful for getting to sites they banned. It was also used by our library system as the LEA banned Z39.50 protocol; they didn't know what it was so they banned it. We also used it as a way into the network so uses could access their files from home; again the LEA refused to allow this.

When I go on holiday it is to Australia so I couldn't get FreeSat even if I tried. On the other hand, I do watch TV down under. It's the only place I can watch Kommissar Rex and Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. I can also watch the amazing Lee Lin Chin read the news or maybe hear Annette Shun Wah on the radio. I don't think Annette on the TV these days.

We use year of admission, followed by a four digit number, which are assigned sequentially, so for this years enrollment 134100 and last year 124100. As a college we only have two sets of numbers. This year it is causing a bit of confusion as 124100 is a year 13 student, although they will be in the "All Yr 12" email group. We are supposedly taking in some HE students, but I assume these will follow the same pattern. Staff have the college initials followed by a sequential four digit number, eg ke1210, although staff who have been here for years login under the old scheme, which was their initials. Eventually, all of these will fall off. All students have an Office 365 account and that email system links to our AD using some magic string, so they can find each other in the address book. I use Outlook, but I can also access my emails in Office 365 and the two are the same, again using the magic string.

The simple answer is budget - BBC Three: £85m vs BBC Four: £49m. According to the press, Auntie has to save £100m and I guess BBC3 is closer to the mark. I've got W7 but with classic start menu, no aero and a few other tweaks, it looks like XP. Now if only I could get it to behave like XP (a search that works and the speed I used to enjoy).

We use Wilko window cleaner1 and a soft cloth. We had a tub of popup screen tissues, but they were dried out. A quick squirt of the window cleaner and they worked fine, but we didn't get any more when they ran out. 1. Other window cleaners are available; Wilkos is the closest place we can buy it.

There really is a piece of technology for everything these days ExtremeTech (surprizingly the link is SFW). I wasn't sure if I should post this or not, but I find it interesting technology. I wonder if you could use it to fill in a face when they blur it in a news broadcast? I have a couple of video enhancers from the days when you would copy VHS but these were simple video amplifiers, so if there was noise on the video signal, that got "enhanced" too! I guess technology has come on in the 25+ years I've had them; haven't used them for 20!.
