We had a teacher drop her iPad and we took it to Timpson's. Took a week and cost £100, both exactly as they said. I don't know if that is expensive or not, but it was very convenient.

Windows 7 is a pain with some current software too. If you use The Gimp, you have to disable several features to get it to run under W7, but it runs perfectly under XP. I do miss XP; it was a lot quicker than W7 but times move on. We will stick with 7 and there is no reason for us to upgrade to 8. (I can imagine the complaints from staff if we did go to 8.) I don't know what happens when we get the 60 new machines we've ordered. Presumably we have to downgrade, but that's not my problem.

I wish you luck - it has been my experience that the Microsoft Platform Web Installer can't get to the M$ box which hosts their PHP. When I tried, the instal log had the url of the msi? it was trying to download and a fail message. Post the url into IE and it downloaded fine and I could run it manually. Back to your problem. Why waste time with M$Sql? I would install MySQL (which is proven to work with Joomla) and go that route. We use Win Server 2012, IIS 8, PHP 5.4.9 and MySQL 5.6 on our Joomla 3 box and it runs swimmingly. We use Shibboleth too, but we have a man who set that up for us.

I guess this is indicative of browser use in general. Presumably Blackberry is used by the older user, those that have had their devices for a time, and I doubt they would be looking at our website.

A ticket came in "Computer working but nothing on monitor or projector". Without even going, I knew what the problem would be. The rooms in this building are fitted with VGA splitters from The Dodgy VGA Splitter Company Inc. Of the seven rooms, I have replaced three over the last 12 months. It is the box of electronics which fails, not the power supply. Anyway, off I trot with a new VGA splitter of a more reliable make. I unplug the power supply from the splitter and then I pull it out of the wall. See the result. I think I was lucky, especially as I hadn't turned the switch off. I think I shall make this my new policy.

Something from The French Deli. In the winter it's a cup of soup and a demi-baguette or a couple of samosas. The ploghman's baguette is yummy and they bake the baguettes on site. The only problem is getting in there as it is usually full of our students.

I've only used MySQL but basically it's the same. Joomla can't talk to the database. Check you have the hostname correct. Try using sa as the user rather than a domain user. Also, do you have the pre-reqs? I see there are some specific php dlls for connecting to M$Sql.

I favour body weight exercises where possible, so I do pull-ups and chin-ups rather than pull downs and dips rather than tricep extensions. I also superset these for the extra burn, typically 60-80 pull-ups in sets of 8 and dips in sets of 12. I work out with minimal rest between sets, no more than 60 seconds. For chins & dips, the rest period is walking between the equipment. For bench press and shoulder press, I usually use a Smith machine. I reckon you can lift 10-15 kgs more on a Smith than with a free bar. Actually I use both, as in the Summer I lift in my garage and I only have free weights. I train "close to the edge", which is sets of 10 of what you can lift, and if you run out before the 10, you have a slight rest and keep going until you complete the set. Exercise while you are doing something else is good to. While you are watching the TV, do a set of push ups during the commercial break. I do. I've been wondering if you could lose weight by getting rid of the furniture and watching TV standing up. Actually you don't have to get rid of the furniture, just don't use it. You could do pliés while watching TV for that extra calorific burn. Any exercise you do is good. I have seen those strange bench presses on youtube, but I've never seen anyone do them in the gym. Where I go, there are a lot of body builders and they are always happy for me to join in with them, even if it does mean taking most of the weight off and putting it back on again. It doesn't take very long and I get inspired watch them lift ridiculous weights.

We use sticky labels printed with the name of the college and we write the asset number onto the label with a permanent marker. It's a pity the sticky on the labels isn't better!

I've been having no end of problems with ebay. Thursday of last week, I tried to login from home and I was presented with a message to phone customer support and quote a security code. Did this no problems. Next day, I came into work and was presented with the same screen. After 1/2 hour on the phone, they reckoned they couldn't grant me access to my account, as they couldn't prove who I was. I would have to phone in again later from home and they would sort it. I phoned in and they granted me access. In all three cases, they said I could get in using my secret question. Well you could if the system gave you the chance to do this. On Friday, their customer services bod said they were tracking machine id's from where you access your account. Can you see the problem here? If you access your account from many machines, which I do, I'll have to phone them for each and every machine, that I use. Friday, they said they had "cleared the flag" and I could access my account again. Yes, I could over the weekend, but this morning at work, I'm getting the screen to phone them and again quote the security code. It looks like another 30 mins on the phone. I am really annoyed and I will probably miss out on something that I am bidding on.

Hopefully you CAN get the electricians to provide enough sockets. When the IT office was being rebuilt at my first school, the architect came in and said there would be 10 sockets in our room, that's two each for the techies, one for the printer and one spare. He was horrified when I said we needed 6 each, and that I wanted 4 double spares scattered around the office, so 28 sockets in all. "Let's make it an even 30", I said. I was determined to get rid of the four way extensions on everyone's bench. I don't know if it happened as I left before it was done. There was some muttering about there not being enough capacity in the box where the fuses lived. Where I work now, we do have enough sockets in theory, but they are all badly placed. For instance mine are behind my chair and I can't turn the desk around to face the sockets, so I have a long 4 way to power my PC and screens coming off one socket. So get enough sockets and have them in sensible places.

My mother needs one. It really is about time the police took her licence away; she is a nightmare on the road. Very inattentive. She doesn't have any accidents but she sure sees a lot of them.

We (the junior and myself) have a thrilling couple of days, visiting every PC and making sure all the keyboards and mice are OK. We also have to check the headphones in the language lab and if previous experience is anything to go by, we will have to replace about half. I have a flask of Mrs Unixman's very strong coffee on hand!

Reinstalled my PC, going from Mandriva 2010 to Fedora 20. It has been a bit of a challege. The last time I used Fedora was version 14 and much of the config has changed. On the plus side, it is still quick. On the downside, KDE 4 is even more bloated, but this doesn't affect me too much as I run KDE apps but use IceWM. I have had to abandon kmail after 13 years of use; the new version insists it needs akonadi, which kills the machine. Since I have only ever used kmail to do what the name implies and I don't use the integrated PIM features, I decided to disable the services involved. The latest version of kmail refuses to run without it, and it proved too difficult to get a previous version running, so I've moved to thunderbird.

You read the sonnets but ideally you see the plays. When I was at school in the 1970s, the only things that we read in EngLit I liked was The Secret Agent (which is quite prophetic) and Shakespeare. It's such a shame Bill isn't putting out new material! I absolutely hated (and still do) Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Jude the Obscure, Catcher in the Rye, Lord of the Flies, The Yearling and Nineteen Eighty-Four which we "brainy" kids had to read. The lower stream students had Sword In The Stone, Robin Hood and Robbery Under Arms, which I do lilke. I have always believed that we got the same novels as our parents and grandparents had when they were at school. Give kids interesting books (not those considered "classics") and they will read. When I had one, I pointed him at Build a Six-headed, Six-user Linux System LG #124 and our box of assorted bits and asked him to see if he could get it running. He managed a four head system. I then suggested he might like to push it and explore the limitations, and write it up as a business case. This gave him something lasting that he could wave at employees and universities. He now works as a developer for Redhat.
