I first installed Redhat 5.1 and I've carried over into Fedora and I've always found it very stable. My only criticism is their seeming random naming conventions Red Hat Linux and List of Fedora releases. Fedora started with cities, and moved to scientists, with a few random things included. (What is a 'Beefy Miracle'?)

You get what you pay for. At my last school, we had an expensive 3D printer (binder type) and it gave no trouble, apart from the time it took for objects to print. The DT guys used to run it 24/7 to get though the work. I guess we all would like a photopolymerization printer; I know they have come down in price so maybe soon!

We're a college and we run our own. Currently it's based on a rubbish, custom written CMS but we are moving to Joomla. Actually, all of the intranet has been on Joomla for a year or so. Can't get SMT to make a decision on the new designs to go live. (We've been waiting for 9 months and doing double updates is very tedious.) Joomla has loads of themes available and is very easy to use.

We use them on about 1/3 of our doors and they've been fine, apart from one belligerent lock which constantly broke down. The installers reckon they replaced it, after the initial failure but it kept on refusing to work. Since we haven't had a problem for a while, I guess they finally did replace it. I suppose they were trying to save money. The other doors use ASSA locks, which I find easier to change the battery in.

How long are they? My last boss seemed to think "Why use a 1m when a 5m will do." We had many 5m cables being used as patch leads in the cabinets, which made shutting the doors difficult. You could do the same. Our last junior techie had the same motto. During the summer break, I found a 25m cable connecting a PC to the network port under the desk. Stuff them all in a bin bag and keep them for when you have a work experience person in. Have them sort them out by length. Keeps them quiet for hours.

When we had this problem, the students had self enrolled in the course, and the course was set to un-enroll students who had not accessed the course for 30 days. For the teacher to access the submissions, they had to enroll the students manually and "Recover old grades if possible".

Whenever staff complain about this, I show them that it all works perfectly in anything that isn't IE. So why do we force IE? The MIS system only works in IE, so rather than fixing that, we potentially break every other website.

We have a college FB, where we advertise forthcoming events. We also have a college Twitter where we tweet school closures, progress on the new building, messages to students, etc. We have this mostly because when the college is closed, posting the info on the website causes our poor server to grind to a halt, due to the number of hits. We also have departmental Twitters, setup by the dept heads. One is the IT feed, which is supposed to be used for server outages, but the boss hasn't tweeted for over a year. Finally there is FB and Twitter for admissions. The admissions tweets were a complete waste of time over the last two years, so this year they setup an FB, but they haven't done anything with it. There may also be dept FB's but that is down to the individual depts.

This Bulk Rename Utility can rename files according to a delimited list (so says the help page). I've never done it but I've often used it for regexp renaming and it works superbly.

You can, of course, run php from the command line (or cmd is you're under windows).

The final word in your post, isn't one you hear every day! The change to energy saving bulbs didn't benefit this particular consumer. My entire house is lit with 100W bare bulbs (I do like it bright), with five in the lounge room. When I tested energy savers with my light meter, they were no were near as bright.

I wonder how long it will be before vacuum cleaner upgrade kits appear on the market? The EU might have banned the sale of powerful vacuum cleaners, but not electric motors. When they banned 100W incandescent light bulbs, some enterprising people started to sell 100W mini heaters. Mind you the light bulb ban was ineffective, as it is still very easy to buy "proper" 100W-ers rather than the newfangled dim energy savers.

I've always had carp Freeview reception. When it rains, the picture breaks up, freezes, or just isn't there. I never had this problem when we had proper analogue TV. A bit of snow and/or ghosting happened during rainstorms. I live in the wilds of the Black Country and I can see the Sutton Coldfield transmitter, so there should be better reception. Luckily, I have FreeSat - lots more channels in any case.

I suspect the answer is no, but is it possible to have a passcode for just the settings? I know you can completely remove the 4 digit passcode. We want students to be free to use the iPads but not change anything.

A big welcome back to my thread! I left Demon for some proper Yorkshire broadband, PlusNet. OK, so it's BT in disguise, but there hasn't been any problems, apart from a couple of hours downtime a few months ago. Leaving Demon was a pain. I needed a MAC code from Demon, and they said they wouldn't accept a request for one via email (even though they email you the code). I had to either phone them up or write to them. I chose to write; if I had phoned them I would have ended up swearing at them. I heard nothing back, and a few days later I emailed them. They asked if I could email a copy of the letter I had posted, which I did and they emailed the MAC code. So the will honour an email request for a MAC code, if you push hard enough. Anyway, good riddance to them.
