It has been 8 or 9 years since I last used WINE but it was very useful getting ancient Windows programs that teachers reckoned they couldn't do without, when Linux was introduced across the site. One particular suite of science simulations ran better on WINE than Windows. On Windows, there was one simulation which would crash the PC and the students would access this so they could talk with their mate for 5 minutes while the PC rebooted. Under WINE, absolutely nothing happened when students accessed this. We have one PC whereby the teacher has file explorer open, she'll browse to her file (say a ppt) and click to open. The file opens with the correct program, but explorer closes. She said this is annoying (although not a show stopper). She also says it used to do it several months ago but it fixed itself, until it started again last week. Any ideas? I am tempted to see if it fixes itself again. Probably a reimage over the summer hols, but it would be nice to know why it is happening.

We use Medial - great product. Full AD integration. If you use Moodle or Blackboard videos are easy to embed in the page. Also includes live streaming and lesson capture as an add-on, which can open up a whole load of possibilities.

It's has been a long time since I installed osticket, but I have installed lots of other WIMP (Windows, IIS, MySQL, PHP) systems with no problems. For MySQL - try here https://dev.mysql.com/downloads/installer/ - it's pretty much click and it will install. For PHP - go to https://windows.php.net/download/ - again it's easy to install, just copy it to where you want and change the php.ini file to suit. The biggest problem I've found is determining whether you need thread safe or non thread safe. I always choose thread safe if possible. phpmanager isn't required. The hardest part I've found is configuring IIS. Just keep fiddling with the config until it works. Permissions are the main problem I've found - include IIS_IUSR and it seems to work.

We just use their student number. The first 2 digits are year of entry and the remaining four a sequential number incremented when they are entered into the MIS system. For reasons that I can't fathom the 15's start at 0000, the 16's start at 2000, the 17's start at 4000 and the 18's start at 6000. I assume the 19's will start at 8000 and then we'll go around again. We don't assign student numbers.

We use Macs and have Logic Pro installed locally. The reason we have that is that is what the teacher wanted - it's his room and he supports it, although we control the Macs.

Control Panel > Default Programs > Set Your Default Programs See how Firefox says it has 4 of 8 defaults. When I click on Set this program as default, it says This program has all its defaults (and my PC works correctly). Does anybody know how to set this either via a login script or GP? I thought a call to dism.ex in my login script might have done it, but apparently not. Thanks in advance.

You can ride a road bike on tow paths with no real problem. I take my Brommie on them regularly and while it might not be the best bike for it but it does the job. Obviously it would be better on a bike with bigger wheels - I've ridden it a lot in Edinburgh and the cobbles are a good test for your fillings! 70 miles are the most that I've done on it - a nice days ride. It's the only bike I've got. Invest in a good saddle. I have a Brooks; they are uncomfortable until broken in but one it has molded to your bum, it's brilliant.

Our yr 13s leave tomorrow and it will be the usual fancy dress day. There will be a bbq and and an ice cream van. The best fancy dress costume was a couple of years ago. One of the girls made Pac Man costume and four boys dressed as ghosts chased her around the quad. I wish I had a picture of it.
