Staff and students can buy software via the LEA here. It is the same price as the school would pay plus the VAT. I don't know if they can supply hardware in the same way.

The issue I had was on a Vista machine but the problem was it wasn't detetected by the BIOS and this does seem to be fairly common fault, if the help forums are to be believed.

I was a Rank Xerox engineer in the 70s. Then a photocopier was good if it went 2000 copies between callout and each machine was monitored for the number of copies it did between failures. My father in law was the bursar at a tech college a few hundred yards from where I lived and they really clobbered their copier. However, It's failure rate was very good because he'd get me to go in after work if there was a problem, which I never logged. But it always went wrong at lunchtime on a Friday. I'd have a freebie lunch in the staff canteen, give the machine a quick clean and then go home knowing he'd cover for me if the office called. All the engineers hated schools because very teacher seemed to think they could fix anything that went wrong. Apart from any other damage, their repair work always included scraping half the selinium off of the drum.

Here's the advice from Crucial. I've not tried it yet. The purpose of performing a power cycle is to allow a seeminly dead SSD to be detected again. 1. In a laptop, install the SSD, power on and enter the BIOS. 2. Leave it in BIOS for around 30 minutes without using the laptop, then power off and disconnect the SSD altogether. 3. After 30 seconds, reconnect the SSD and repeat steps 1 and 2 again. 4. Power off, take out and reconnect the SSD and power back on. After the above steps, the SSD should be detected in the system again. If not, we will need to arrange an exchange for you.

A mate of mine brought his laptop round because he said it was infected with ransomware. It wouldn't boot at all and when I used a boot CD there was no sign of his drive. It's a solid state sata jobby and I cannot access it via a caddy either. Can anyone recommend a utility that might recover at least some of the data?

Talk to the contractors, you may find they can work with you. They say everything has to be turned off but that's often the easiest thing to say.
