Not a big deal because everything will be backed up. If you have an identical drive, you can try swapping the boards over. Something else you could try is to stick the drive on a radiator to get nice and warm, then try it.

Trouble is, they need to run Windows 7 Pro and looking at the prices, it will cost at least 50% more to get a Dell or Lenovo, so there goes our budget and no replacement projectors. To be honest and this may seem a somewhat selfish attitude, the Toshiba laptops come with free 3-year warranty. I'll be long gone by the time it expires. My intention is to do a report with pros and cons for Tosh and Dell and let someone else make the decision.

The one we are looking at is HD3000 but in view of the usage, I'm not sure that's too big an issue. As for flimsy cases, apart from a couple of broken lid catches, we've not had that much damage to the Toshiba laptops. As for faults, out of the 50 odd we have bought, we,ve had two dead screens (one under warranty) a dead drive, again under warranty and an external vga port died (laptop moved to a non IWB invironment).

We have to replace a load of laptops when we upgrade to Server 2012 and Windows 7. We can get Toshiba i3 laptops at a really keen price with three years warranty but County are pushing us to go for i5s. Whilst I appreciate what they are saying, the extra we would have to pay would mean that other things like projector replacement wouldn't happen. These laptops will be used in classrooms running Smart software and Office documents. So their options are a fast laptop with a display that can just be seen if you turn off the lights and close the blinds or an adequate computer and a nice bright display. We've always used Toshiba laptops and had very good reliability. I'm interested to know what others would do in my place.

Dell Poweredge by any chance? They are notorious for it. I think it might be a BIOS issue. You need to monitor the CPU and case temperatures.

Have you tried backing up a smaller number of files? That should help determine if it's a file size issue.

I had a similar thing backing up to a USB caddy. I could access the backup drive, manipulate files and all looked fine. But NTBackup failed. I swapped out the caddy and it's right as rain. Do you have another backup device you can try?

Have you checked to see if you can reserve it on line to collect at your branch. We had to drive to Kidderminster to get our as there was no stock in Worcester or the surrounds.
