We have just upgraded to Server 2012 and Windows 7 and I'm trying to install an HP 1022n and I can just about to get it to work on a USB port but it won't share, says the user doesn't have access. I've installed an Officejet Pro 8000 on the same computer and shared that ok. There's only a basic driver for the 1022n on the HP site, so I suspect that it just won't work with Windows 7. The printer is only used in the office for the odd confidential stuff. Can anyone recommend a cheap mono network printer that will work?

I've just installed a load of these and they seem fine for the price. The biggest gripe I have and I'm sure the users will agree, is the amount of force it needs to extract the network cable. Hopefully, they will loosen up with use. Failing that, I'll have to break the lugs off, which will create its own problems.

Not long after I got my NEC carphone, I spotted an accident at Spaghetti Junction where there'd been an oil spill and a couple of cars had hit the armco. I called 999 using hands-free but lifted the handset to talk to the police controller (no laws in those days). When I'd finished, I replaced the handset and continued down the Aston Expressway singing along to the radio. A minute or so later, a voice came out of the hands-free speaker "Have you finished the call mate?" He never commented on my singing.

My first phone was an NEC box in the boot of the car with a handset on the dashboard. Cost around £1500. I then got a similar Panasonic thing but the transceiver in the boot could be removed a slotted into a portable rig complete with full size handset. Weighed a ton. This was back in 1985. When I was in the RAF one of my jobs was to service remote radio sites, which included sheds on Salisbury Plain. The back of my landrover was crammed full of radio gear and I had a hand throttle to keep the engine revs up because the generator couldn't handle the load at tickover. Concorde was doing its test flights around then and its own VHF frequency. I was at a remote dropping site at RAF Kemble and the OIC was getting agitated because Concorde was coming towards us and 4 or 5 Hercules coming in at low level to do a heavy goods drop. I dialed up their frequency and asked politely if they could move away. "Roger, we're out of here" came the reply. The left wing dipped and it was like the opening sequence of Startrek as this dot disappeared into the distance. Nothing to do with phones but a fond memory. Remind me sometime to tell the story about me calling up RAF Woodvale's approach radar to get directions.

That's interesting. We have some 7700s and we have just upgraded to 1gig. Starting an upgrade to Windows 7 tomorrow but I'll try them with XP to see what happens. As XP support is about to end, upgrading to 7 is for the best anyway.

We have a load of HP DC7800s that are well built and have been very reliable. The biggest problem is the adjustable monitors. The kids yank them up and down, pulling the power lead out.

Bit silly but better than anything else on at the time.

The LEA fitted the switches yesterday and I haven't had a chance to see how they are configured but I wouldn't have thought so. Oh well, the LEA experts can sort out any problems.

I'd stick to the dodgy plants in the garden shed. But be careful, the police helicopters scout around looking for sheds without snow on the roof.

To date been using Ghost 11 for imaging and if I did a peer to peer image I'd get a transfer rate of around 300MB/min. We've just upgraded all of the switches to 1GB in preparation for a server and clients upgrade and I just tried a peer to peer image, expecting it to be 10 times as fast and it's 10 times as slow! I've tried pinging with the buffer at 65500 and that's coming back at <1ms, which seems to indicate that the network is faster, so what's happening? The server is still running at 100mb. I'm hoping that this is a quirk of Ghost and that when we deploy using WDS, it will be fine otherwise it's going to be a long job.

Just fitted the daylight ones and they are bright. Bit like an operating theatre. With hindsight, perhaps the warm ones.

I think he was referring to S&R not the Sea King. I was watching a programme about emergency services in Scotland yesterday and it featured a couple of rescues by Sea Kings from HMS Gannet. I wonder if the Bristow crews will be as experienced in winching casualties out of extremely hazardous situations?
