That is my plan, I have two ATM, dropping down to one In-Place would be ok, I just figured it's always best practice to wipe and rebuild - not sure on the history of this machine (One server I inherited was running 2012R2 from a 2000 in-place upgrade - Go Network Neighbourhood!) This will likely be the plan I go with - Would you recommend 2016 then 2019 or skip 2016? We have Veeam, but It's the free version so Windows Server Backup does the bulk of system images - Can you get a full restore from the free version as I thought it was files only. Joking aside I've met people who would probably have a DC per IT suite - Muddy the waters.

you're right - It's back with the licence keys. I do wish they wouldn't do that.

So here's the story - I currently have 2 DC's, both 2012R2 - One does AD, GPO etc. the other does DHCP, DNS etc. I want to upgrade the main DC to 2019 - So my plan was to promote the second DC to be the main DC and then wipe and rename the primary to Server 2019, then transfer all the roles back and decommission the second - I found this great technet article, does anyone have any advice before I take the plunge? Hi All, Does anyone know why Server 2019 has dissapeared from VLSC again? Or is this a glitch my end - I can still see Server 2019 Essentials and Language packs though cheers

Another + for the Hue cameras - They work with the Windows 10 'Camera' App and require no additional drivers so students can use them on locked down machines too (depending on AppLocker) so no need to install any software

Hi All, first time posting in the AV forum! We are looking to purchase screens to replace our projectors (already looked into interactive ones but decided on the TV's) A lot of them come with Android built in for whizzy apps and purchases, but does anyone know how to lock these down with a central console or something similar? I know they can go through our filtering, but it doesn't stop a user connecting to a rogue access point. I'm stuck between something more traditional and basic or the potential teaching benefits of a giant android tablet, but lack the specifics on how to keep things under control (75" angry birds anyone?) Hi All, I know folder re-direction is a pain on W10 but I used to just use the basics; However now I need to lock down the desktop so staff users can't save files there and set a pre-defined set of icons (Office 365, My PC etc.) The policy (as far as I know) works for students but for staff is gives the following error in event viewer Failed to apply policy and redirect folder "Desktop" to "\\*SERVER*mandatoryprofileW10staff$\Desktop". Redirection options=0x1001. The following error occurred: "Failed to copy files from "C:\Users\*USER*\Desktop" to "\\*SERVER*\mandatoryprofileW10staff$\Desktop". This may be due to one or more files under the source or target folders with a fully qualified file name longer than 256 characters.". Error details: "The copy functions cannot be used. There's no way any file is over 256 characters, even with the $ as it's pretty much on the root of the file server. Anyone have any ideas? I'm a bit stumped!

On another note I've been asked to investigate wireless visualisers - Does Promethean have any bolt-ons like the activeslate that function as a camera? and some people are asking about the poll boxes - anyone got some hanging around? Hi All, It's that time of year when we all get excited about new versions of office. So far I have put off updating to 2019 or ProPlus 365 (Desktop) due to our ECDL exams coming up, but MS insists 2019 uses the same GPO settings and ECDL will *probably* work still with 2019. But this also raises an interesting question of Office ProPlus - Which they believe will be better than 2019 and updated more seemlessly (My experience with 365 is just the limited web apps) As a windows school I'm keen to try 2019 (bar ECDL) but am tempted to investigate ProPlus - Does anyone have experience of it? Hi All, So we have a selection of laptops that need to leave site and students can use - As we don't have any cloud solutions (other than office 365) I thought windows 10 S would be a great way to lock the machines down - However speaking to MS even though we have a VLSC agreement we don't get Windows 10 S keys (?) and each time we try to input one of ours it upgrades to Pro Has anyone got any knowledge of this? I know Windows 10 S will continue to work without a licence key, but I'd prefer to know they are licenced. Cheers,

These sound like they would run windows 10 ok - My techs have been working on Mac to Windows conversion and they've got W10 education working on a similar spec, could be a money saver?

We never found a fix for this, but you're all right it is caused by Cortana in Applocker - The GPO we found does little to disable Cortana's 'search' function which gives them access to a host of 'features' Another school created GPO's to lock these down, but I don't know how far they ever got with it - Until such time as we have a proper fix I just get them to open the menu twice, it soon becomes second nature; Unless anyone has a fix now? I've noticed a similar issue with our new deployments - I also experienced this on Server 2016 so maybe it's a new security 'feature' Basically network shares set to 'everyone' no longer include the local administrator so MSI's and Scripts/Batch files run from shares fail - The temp solution was to tick the 'run as another user' box on Deployment Tools - This seems to make the issue less.... troublesome, so maybe try this?

Hi Both, We have software restriction polices set for drives that apply to batch files, links, powershell scripts, exe's etc. so this covers most bases - those that don't are locked via file server resource manager. We could go through and disable every .exe cortana can access on the local PC, but we're talking the entire system32 folder + more and I've found this can affect things like login/logoff scripts and office programs from running correctly. Dear All, We still have students on 1607 as this is the latest 'stable build' we have, but as I'm keen to push them to other versions MS seem to have cracked it with 1803 (My staff PC is broken after the upgrade, but fresh installs seem to work better) But there's still one big bug, they have to open the start menu twice - The first time it's all greyed out, the second time works fine with no issues (this is on every login) I've discovered the culprit is Cortana (we've blocked her via applocker) as when she is unlocked the start menu opens first time; the kicker? Unlocking Cortana also unlocks the run commands and full access to system32 etc. by simply typing something in the start menu. Has anyone solved the issue of Cortana blocking without this wired applocker start menu glitch? I've contemplated locking everything Cortana can access (powershell, CMD, regedit etc.) but that's a long list for a simple bug. Thoughts are welcome. *Additional* This bug does not happen on 1607 - 1703 was the first release to feature this glitch and each release subsequently
