Interesting question, because I've wondered the same thing. Our current data team are super helpful, so that's not an issue anymore. It's the apps that take a day or two to sync up, so nothing's ready for the first day of term. So I'm wondering what's stopping us from rolling forward at say the start of this week? (Term starts for students on Thurs)

The last we heard from our reseller, before the summer hols, MS hadn't told them anything. Hopefully they're now also clued in... (I'd seen it was $1/machine for the first year in the USA)

The printers are appearing in the list almost as if it is finding them directly i.e. not via the server, because they appear with their machine names, but then clicking on them seems to add them whcih also suggests it's print server related to be able to pull the driver. This only seemed to be in Notepad, but I didn't test with a lot of apps. Word seemed to be behaving sensibly, and only showing mapped printers.

Hi folks, One odd thing I've noticed with our classroom build of Win 11 over Win 10, is that when I open something like Notepad and try and print, it shows mapped printers, but also seemingly all other printers it can find on the network. This doesn't seem to be the printers on the print server, this looks like they've been found via a broadcast. Anyone know if there's a group policy setting or something to prevent this? Inevitably, a student's going to add one and print rubbish to it, and if printing direct I'm not sure that will be easily traced. Thanks

When I say first login, this is literally the very first login on the machine post-building with MEMCM. Every subsequent login is normal, irrespective of user. I assumed it was some post-build thing, as both Win 10 and 11 do it.

With both Win 10 and 11 post a MEMCM rebuild task sequence, the first login for us always takes around 10 minutes. I have always assumed it was some further setup that was required. Second login onwards is back to normal, in that it only takes seconds (25 seconds on a reasonable spec machine I've just tested on).

Hi folks, I couldn't find an ideal technical forum for this, so posting here. (Mods, feel free to move it belongs elsewhere) We're using Instagram for school publicity. I'm not a regular user, and Instagram's fixed aspect ratios for all photos are annoying. When posting via the website you seem to have a choice of three aspect ratios, and then all posted photos follow that aspect ratio. Just to check that my understanding is correct, and that you cannot change per photo on the website? Does the app behave the same way? (iPhone app, in case it makes any difference) If a "yes" to both I will ask staff to try and stick to one aspect ratio. Thanks

We use Antiference cables, which are the only reliable HDMI cables we've found. With those we can run 10m to a wall box, and 2m from a wall box. it will still require dropping the refresh frequency for the screen to 30Hz in Windows. It's a right faff, and a shame that all screen manufacturers don't have an EDID setting for 1920x1080 (Benq did, not sure if they still do).

They've been taught, caught, told, repeatedly. I had the opportunity to ask our county legal team, and this was their recommendation. Just trying to do the right thing. Thanks all for the replies. I managed to sort it by separating out the 10 minute screen saver setting into its own policy, and creating a separate 2 minute policy. The 10 minute policy had authenticated users and the relevant staff group in scope, and then under delegation permissions it had the 2 minute group added with deny. In the 2 minute policy, authenticated users had read access under delegation, and had apply group policy unticked.

Similar experience here. A friend was with Juniper and lost nothing with the first type of jab, and then they were switched to Mounjaro. Then it's a question of how bad the side effects are. And like any diet, once you stop, all the weight is likely to come back on.

I haven't tried again, I just use PXE.

I've used gpresult, and the GPO isn't showing at all for this user. Under scope > security filtering I have added a group that the user is a member of, and also the user directly. Is authenticated users also required, or will that then apply it anyone who logs in?

I’ve got an issue with GPO processing order. The background is that we have a GPO that applies to all staff and sets the screensaver timeout to 10 mins, that’s done under User Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization > Screen saver timeout. That’s coupled with two other settings in the same folder, to Password protect the saver, and to Enable the screen saver. We have a separate issue with some staff that have been caught several times with unlocked PCs, and the plan is to set their timeout to 2 minutes. Therefore, I have created a new GPO with that setting and moved it above in link order. My understanding is that a GPO that’s above will be processed first, yet it doesn’t seem to take effect and 10 minutes still applies. I’ve tried moving it below for lack of a better idea, same problem. The first GPO is applied to a user group which includes the test user, whereas the second GPO only applies to the test user. Any ideas why this isn’t working? I’ll tinker some more and double check that it isn’t set in any other GPOs. Thanks

The ICO seemed to be saying there were different elements in both bits of legislation, and I heard something along those lines in a briefing from a county legal team as well today. Although I'm not sure I'm going to try reading both to check!

As I'm sure others have said, they are reported opinions/comments from other students, these aren't factual inaccuracies about their child. Definitely escalate to your DPO, and always worth a call to the ICO helpline.

I'm not on comission 😁 but you can install the message sending console on any client PC. It's then I would say the same as sending an email, in that you set a message type, subject and body text, and pick your person (or send to all).

My biggest wishes are that I could target users rather than PCs, and be able to edit notifications (they added that, and then removed it again when it broke things). I'll need to look into using departments, but it's currently park broken on the server it's on and the server requires rebuilding, so a future project...

We paid something like £1 per license initially, and 50p per license per year maintenance (for around 120 license). Is there anything better and cheaper?
