Don't panic! we had this a couple of weeks ago and it's almost cleaned up - all the workstations, laptops etc. are cleaned and running with their firewalls up and no exceptions allowed, to prevent reinfection. Obviously we can't do that with the servers, so I'm coming in on Monday (holidays start today) to isolate them and clean them up once and for all to kill the beastie off.

I'm going to leave this till next week now. Just found a possible cause. Con--ficker running on the server I was setting up. Ah well:o

I used to be a stage lighting/theatre technician which was great fun but minimum wage... and for some reason I always wanted to be a coach driver! Love getting in the classroom occasionally too, ICT teaching these days doesn't float my boat (far too arty) but teaching French or Science is a hoot. Fortunately, as I work in a small secondary school I get to do all of the above from time to time:D

I'm just doing one for now - I've put it in a test OU with blocked inheritance - pretty much the only policy that applies to it is the one that sets up the updates and it's pointing to WSUS. gpresult confirms this is working ok I had that set the other way - I've changed it now but still no joy Should I be able to pull the computers from the domain into WSUS or do they only appear once they've tried to connect?

I'm being dense here. Setting up a new WSUS server on a newish DC. I've installed it (good start) and Synchronised it (2993 updates downloaded) BUT 1. There's no computers showing 2. I can't see the individual updates (just the fact that there 's 2993 of them) What have I forgotten to do?

We tried, as a way of getting a techy on the cheap:cool:, but in the end we had to create a proper post and pay someone:)

Unusually, I've needed it twice this year. Once for a student who came back to do some re-sits as an external candidate (for a reason that escapes me, but it happened:o) the other was a up the previous tech had made when a year 7 student asked for her password to be reset and he acutally gave her the username and password of a similarly named older child who'd left early to another school, meaning we had a kid in year 8 with a filestore with the year 11s that just left:rolleyes:, saying "where's all my work"

+1 for AB Tutor - been running the evaluation version and have just put the order in to finance to buy it today. It's great on so many levels (not least unnerving the kids cos they don't know when they're being watched:D

Continuing the program of replacing projectors with widescreen TVs where possible, I need a large (minimum 42") TV to go in the catering room and a smaller one (minimum 32") for another room. Both need PC inputs and wall mounts, the larger one needs a swivel wall mount as it is going in the corner of the room so it needs to be able to turn a bit towards the centre (see attached plan for an explaination). I'm not bothered about manufacturer as they are pretty much of a muchness for these purposes, but I do need them to be towards the budget end of the market. We're not quite ready to order yet but should be within the next week or two.

We were planning a launch involving putting a piece of dry ice in one before the teacher opened it for the first time but it didn't happen - we'd imaged the netbooks before the dry ice arrived and the teachers were chomping at the bit for them so we just released them:)

For a left field suggestion, how about an M-Pod? They're like a large suitcase with integrated power supplies and even a gas strut to hold the lid open:D I got mine from CPLtd and they're fab (the M-Pods and CPLtd). if it's affecting both servers connected to a UPS, I would say the first place to look would be the UPS. It may be that one server is better at coping with brownouts / momentary blackouts than the other. Do you have a spare UPS to try? or another one to connect in series? As for happening at the same time each fortnight... it's not on the same ringmain as something like the D+T department using a welder, or anything else that would suddenly change the mains voltage slightly is it? (here in the wilds of south Cumbria where the electricity frequently comes in with lumps in it I often have UPSs on my UPSs)

I'm expecting many and various replies to this one... I'm speccing up a machine to act only as a terminal server for staff to connect into from home (to see network drives, SIMS etc.) via Sun Global Destop which is provided via the LEA. We've only got 30-odd staff in total and I wouldn't expect there to be more that 4 or 5 users on at once (though when report deadlines are clost there may be a few more). I've got one of these SCL Online - Scorpion A AMD Phenom Quad 9650+ 4GB DDR2 500GB DVD RW running XP on my desk and it's RAPID, no matter what I throw at it during the day (Including SIMS, Sage, Nova, Outlook, Excel, Powerpoint and Word at the same time) it rarely slows down; I'm considering getting another one, sticking Server 2003 on it and using that as the remote access machine. Will that cut it or do I need to think on a more industrial (server-like) scale?

Morning all, Does anyone know of a registry (or otherwise) hack to make the fan in an Acer come on full blast, all the time? We're having a few issues with Acer Aspire 5315s overheating on Windows XP. First, a little background. We have a load of 5315s - 15 for curriculum use and 8 or so staff "teacher laptops". They used to run Vista, but have now been downgraded to XP (which has significantly upgraded their performance and general reliability). The student ones are fine, but some of the teacher ones have developed what has come to be called "sudden laptop death syndrome", where they shut down without warning due to overheating and can't be restarted for a few minutes until the temperature drops. I'm wondering if XP isn't controlling the fans properly??? Stuff we've tried with limited / no success: Physically removing the back cover and removing a load of muck from the heatsink. Updating the BIOS to the latest version in the hope it would give some heat-related options in there. It didn't. Installing, amongst others, SpeedFan, which detect temperatures but can't find any fans to control |(I found a gadget to control the fan in an Acer Aspire One netbook - which produced some very strange temperature readings - maybe it's the thermal sensor rather than the fan that there's a problem with?? or maybe the drivers just don't match) In Device Manager, there IS a device, reported as working properly (under system devices) named "ACPI Thermal zone" - but I'm not sure where to take that line of reasoning! Installing the Vista "Empowering Technology" stuff - it installs OK but then doesn't work. any ideas, anyone? if it was a desktop I'd have snipped the power cables to the fan and connected it straight to a spare HDD power connector from the PSU but I can't do that in a laptop... unless push REALLY comes to shove!

A thought from outside the box: we've had some success with replacing projectors with 42"+ TVs - obviously depends on what the projector's used for and the teaching style of the teacher, but in certain circumstances they only cost a little more than a replacement lamp and are clearer and brighter than a projected image which makes up for the slightly smaller size. That and they should last longer. obviously no use if there's an interactive whiteboard, or a teacher that regularly scrawls over a projected image on a normal board, but for smaller rooms whare the projector is used mainly for powerpoints and dvds, they're fine.

Shot in the dark, but an easy one to miss and it does match your symptoms exactly: 2 machines with the same name on the network??

Webcam (suitably situated), old computer and a little program called Dorgem that turns your webcam into a security camera (records still images every second and discards any that are the same as the previous one). There's your evidence, then bill them:D. Or disconnect the earth cable from the pc's.

Yup, that's exactly the symptoms I've got. that helps a great deal, at least it's not just us! I'll ring them tonight too (if only to get a MAC!). I love the way their service status (http://www.tiscali.co.uk/cgi-bin/status.cgi is still at 100%
