They should make a Windows 8 personal and a windows 8 business... w8 business would have lots of switches to turn things on and off and allow us to lock stuff down to stop people messing.... kinda like xp but with the performance gains. I was asked to sort a kids laptops out with w8 on, I know its my first foray into it but it was a right royal pain, I am sure with practise I would get used to it but just getting to the proxy settings was a pain... and I had to remove skype cos it didn't work.

I have loads of Gelsprinter used cartridges, Ricoh make it very difficult to send them back so I have a big box full of them.

I just watched a video on youtube about the meraki system where it logs users onto different VLANS and Sids depending on their AD username they put in the splash screen which was what I was looking for. The whole cloud thing is brilliant in theory but I am not convinced its the way I want to go.

Ah right thanks. I will have to rethink how I can use it then. I am swinging towards Meraki.

I have been playing with the MR12, going to deploy it in a staff room with a couple of clients. I am trying to use the portal but its not working, I have 1 SID which I can connect to and browse but it takes me straight into the smoothwall SSL page and no splash screen, the MR12 has this facility doesn't it? With regards to support, first impressions aren't the best. Phoned up 3 times now, last night they said they logged a call and hadn't, today called up and the phone was silent for 4 minutes befiore being transferred to the USA to a nice lady who wanted me to have a great day.

Another nail in the coffin for domain machines from Microsoft I am afraid. it does look like there days are numbered and we are all going to be forced to use tablets

Hi, I have some classmate laptops which aren't the fastest at logging on due to one reason or another so am thinking of making them BYOD type machines that auto logo and all policies are local. We only have 20 so its not a biggy to image them all and all the junior kids have the same passwords so they can all log on as each other anyway (not my decision). The only issue I would have is the internet (which i thought about implementing SSL login or just giving them free filtered access) and accessing their home drives. The confusing part will be when they come to save work. I could create a mapped drive to the root of their homefolders and get them to click through. Has anyone got machines like this on their network? They are lookign at sharing iPads so its a small step into going down that road anyway. Thanks.

Will revisit it then, will Skydrive pro be like in office 2013 where you can upload to a part of sharepoint and not an individual skydrive folders? So it all links into Sharepoint Fo the wishlist a way to link a folder in a users home directory to skydrive so it automatically uploads when they place stuff in it no matter what computer they log on at...

Hi, I have spent a few days messing with Office 365 and wondered how everyone else is using it. For what I can see its just an sharepoint site. I have created a new user with the license for office365 apps and the sharepoint site but when you log in from portal.microsoft.com etc.. it takes you to a blank page with a lovely date on the right and some links and then on the left its got a link to the team site and then some links to user tours. (a note to M$, when you are doing tours I want to see a tour of the stuff not hundreds of smiling faces and pointless powerpoint slides). Where are the web apps? Do you have to go into the sharepoint site to use them. I know its free and all that but I cannot see how we would use this in anger in our site unless we went down the road of hosted emails. I am wondering if they looked at Google apps and how easy and simple it is to use and thought... nahhhh... clunky is best. I must be missing something really obvious, I was quite excited about using web apps but I am not going to create a sharepoint site just for that which is independant from what I already have. We are looking at tablets soon and I can't see this working. Please someone tell me I am wrong. PS. I created a user and gave it access to the sharepoint site but its saying that I don't have permission.. I take it it takes a while to propogate

Well thats another keyboard I hve broken. Synching worked, eventually got the Remote Connectivity Analyser to tivck all the boxes but now I can't log onto the domain from the portal and am getting Error There was a problem accessing the site. I am sure ADFS and SSO are wonderful if they go swimmingly but I am sick of technet now and most just go round and round in circles.

Woohoo, got it synching. i removed the ADFS and the microsoft sync stuff which muct have had the computer name hard coded somewhere. All users are now synched.

Jeez, could MS make it any more annoying to fix after you make 1 little error. I had to change the server name which seems to have caused all sorts of problems not least that its throwing up errors about the computer ID int he database being wrong.... even though i have uninstalled the ADFS stuff 4 times, removed the DB and now into trying to sort it by using the server key managemnt utility which won't let me in with a password error. I only wanted to test office 365 but I think i will call it a day and go over to the dark side.

Looks like irs because I used the servername for my pool or something like that...its 20 past midnight and I need to look at this in a clearer light. Its obviously a domain issue as I tried to recover the server and its still showing the error. Wonder if I could change the server name????

Hit a snag, major PITA. After a reboot I cannot log onto the server as its saying the 'the security database on the server does not have a computer account' I found an article saying its a SPN issue and changing the service account that the ADFS pool uses to a local account. Tried that but its still not letting me on. The biggest pain is I have used the server which has eclipse.net on so that's not working either. Anyone got any advise?

Morning, Trying to get my head round ADFS and office 365. i want to trial the weboffice bit and not the exchange. I followed the instructions on this article AD FS with Office 365 Step by Step Install GuideMessageOps | MessageOps but when i get to the convert to Convert-MsolDomainToFederated –DomainName domain.com bit I am getting failed to setup trust with the microsoft federated gateway I have read the MS stuff (man they know how to overcomplicate stuff) and think I have got my head round what I need to do. Would my firewall be blocking the traffic, its a server so everything should go out okay but it is Smoothwall.

Hi, Did anyone watch the webcast today where you got a free Meraki AP? Just wondered if they had done it before. It was quite interesting, especially the guy from Cirencester saying they pulled out the Netgear kit because it was rubbish (we have netgear rubbish here ) Looking forward to getting the kit and having a play but wondered if you need to subscribe to run it from the web?

Interesting posts, I am going to trial Lightspeed too as I have had enough of the support at Smoothwall, its been mentioned lots on but about how bad its got but the simple case is that if the nice lady on the phone says that no one is available at the moment then its a 2 week wait for a response. Didn't realise the MSI thing with lightspeed though, how does that live with BYOD filtering?

Hi guys, I have some crappy little Classmate laptops which are telling me the batteries need replacing. I have replaced some but they are still showing as being rubbish and its been reported to me that they are blue screening and dying. After reading a few threads online where its been mentioned it may be a bios issue or a mb issue I can't work out what it might be. Has anyone seen this before or have any advise on what to do, I have 9 that's doing this so I am a bit annoyed.

Hi, I am moving our boarding pupils over to SSL logins slowly but am having issues with skype. When I look at the log I am seeing Transparent HTTPS connection not supported by web client. It worked okay when I asked them to put the username and password in the proxy boxes of Skype but I am also wasnting to use kerberos at some point. I don't have any HTTPS inspection policies in place. Strangley (and annoyingly) I am trying to test this on a virtual pc and the filtering is picking up the previous users username when I am using a local users account for testing. Different profile, different username but picking up the old username of a previous user on that computer.
