If I now set one up, is it likely to break anything else?

I was working directly on the DC using the domain admin account, so accessing the C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions folder. If I look in \\domainname\SYSVOL\domainname\Policies\, I just have a massive list of folders with hex names. I don't have a folder called "PolicyDefinitions".

Hiya, I've tried installing the group policy definitions and all the existing ones won't overwrite as they are write protected. How do I install them? Everything just says "copy them in". Thank you Stuart

• I’ve created a new VLAN 8 on my core switch. I’ve given it an IP address of 10.161.8.1 and a SM of 255.255.255.0. • My Windows DHCP server is 10.161.2.11. (SM 255.255.254.0) • My internet router which is the DG for the entire network atm is 10.161.2.1. (SM 255.255.254.0). My goal ultimately is to get the switch to be the DG rather than the Internet router, but that's for another day. • My core switch (which is set to route traffic) is 10.161.2.2. (SM 255.255.254.0) • I’ve setup an additional DHCP scope on my server for 10.161.8.x. • I’ve untagged a port on my core switch into VLAN 8. • On my switch on VLAN 8 I’ve put an ip helper-address of 10.161.2.11. When I plug a laptop into the untagged port it doesn’t get an IP address. The server itself isn’t tagged or untagged in any VLANs but I didn’t think it needed to be because IP routing is on, and the ip helper-address is there. If I specify an IP address on the laptop of 10.161.8.5 with a DG of 10.161.8.1, I can ping 10.161.8.1 (VLAN 8) and 10.161.2.2 (Core switch default VLAN IP), but nothing else. How come it’s not getting an IP? What did I miss? Thank you Stuart

The LACP wasn't configured at all on the switch. Is now and all is well with the world once more. It's now configured 100% though as I'm not sure '10% correct' would really help either Thank you Stuart

The Suffolk schools don't get to see the 'normal' smoothwall interface. @TomHD - do you have a contact there? Nope! Team now configured to use LACP, trunk set up on the switch. The backup is now running faster, and I have no packet loss. Thank you Stuart

I have a server running 2016. Six onboard NICs all teamed to one connection. Correct drivers installed from manufacturers. If I ping the server from anywhere, I get about 1/3 packet loss. If I ping anything from it, no packet loss at all. How does that work then? What do I check to try and figure out what is going on? I got alerted to this as my Veeam backup is horribly slow on it so I started looking at why. It's currently doing a Veeam backup which I'd rather not interrupt, but it says it's running about about 7Mbps so I can't see that would be drawing enough to cause the packet loss. And if it was, how come it's only one way? Thank you Stuart

I'll try and clarify. There is one file belonging to no-one, and 17 pointers pointing to it. If someone deletes one then they are simply deleting the pointer. When the last gets deleted, the file goes too. If what you've suggested could happen, there'd be no point would there. They did think of that!

Yes to both. The way I understand it, if you have a file called "My really important data.doc" 17 times through the same drive, it lilterally is 17 times throughout that drive. Deduplication removes 16 of them, and then makes the pointer for those 16 point at the 17th, so you only have one of them taking up space.

Change your port from 31280 to 31395 (I assume they use the same ports in all schools?). I realise that 31280 should work, but we had issues trying to activate CS6 and found this solved it. If it does, then you may need to speak to schoolsbroadband for a proper solution. Stuart

When looking at a users credentials in AD, what do they have on the "Account" tab in the drop down box next to their "User logon name:"? Is it correct in there? Stuart

So if my range is 10.161.2.x - 10.161.3.x, can I just change my subnet mask to 255.255.0.0 and everything will still work, or will stuff get grumpy because my IP range doesn't start at 10.161.1.x? Stuart

Nope, just saw it wasn't supported and didn't want to roll it out only to find during an exam that something doesn't work. Wouldn't go down well.

Everything is going through the PROXY. Now we know it is the Macs, SchoolsBroadband have done some packet shaping with their IP range so none of them can use more than 5mb at once. Still a little frustrated that the NetSweeper stuff doesn't let me run a report on what they've been trying to access.

I have a subnet mask of 255.255.254.0 and IP addresses from 10.161.2.1 to 10.161.3.255. This was down to me being with my local authority for Broadband. I now am not, but have kept the IP details the same. How easy is it for me to change the subnet mask to give me more IP addresses? Can I just do it and everything will still work, then I can gradually change the IP addresses of things as I wish? I wondered about going to a 255.255.0.0 range and then having servers in 10.161.x.0, printers in 10.161.y.0, macs in 10.161.z.0 etc etc. Is there anything really to gain by doing this other than I can easily see what a device is just by it's IP? Morning, Since moving to SchoolsBroadband, my Internet keeps grinding to a complete halt. We have managed to figure out it is something to do with my Apple Mac's I have, but not more than that. Presumably they are trying to download something in the background, but Schoolsbroadband can't tell me where from. Does anyone have a list of web addresses which I should block by default? Or can tell me how to find out what my Macs are doing? Thank you Stuart

If it's on VMWare, use Veeam or something to backup the entire server, then run the database check on that in it's own environment?

I can't log in to Office 365 with school accounts at the moment. It tells some that the username doesn't exist, and others that their password is wrong. It tells me my password is wrong, if I try "Reset" it tells me the user doesn't exist. I know I do as I'm the admin for it! Anyone else? My personal hotmail account logs in fine. Thank you Stuart
