I've had Huawei before and it was decent. The P9 range is apparently pretty good. My old colleague has has them for years, he's a diehard modder and swears by them because if you sign up for a developer account with them they release special software for them! I had a Xiaomi of some description a while ago as a loan phone from Carphone Warehouse while my Sony was in for repair and it was OK, but I think it was pretty low spec.

Most markers come off if you wipe them with meths/surgical spirit which is what I do if a laptop has to be moved. All our laptops are silver so black sharpie works fine. If the laptops is black, which some of our have been in the past then a silver paint pen works - also wipes off with meths. Just don't douse the laptop in solvent, too much exposure can affect the surface finish.

Junior School with 70 identical laptops. They are asset tagged in an inaccessible place (HDD under the base cover) for the use of IT as the little darlings love to peel the stickers off. This tag identifies which cabinet they go in as well as their financial asset details For easy identification they started off with label maker label on them, some of these got peeled off, so now the lids of most of them are sharpie markered with the location in 2 inch high capital letters. YEAR 3, YEAR 4-5, LRC etc. It's lo-tech but it seems to work.

I have 2 quite small networks. Both of them are perfectly happy on their /23 addressing scheme. Based on that, I don't think it's worth me doing here. We don't have BYOD or VOIP, we only have 4 MFD and the SAN is a totally physically separate network. If your network is bigger and more complex than mine, then yes I suggest you do it. When our VOIP system appears at tail end of next summer, then yes I shall VLAN off the phones because: security addressing and broadcast traffic.

I'm sorry you're having problems, but it's working really well for us. I don't scan to google drive, but i do scan to a local home drive, it just worked. Scan to email was a bit more of a faff as O365 uses a non standard port and you have to enter service mode on the copier to change ports.

Thanks, None of our runs are more than 100m, but a couple of places have daisy chains so I'll force them to gig/duplex. I'm in the process of getting quotes to install multiple links and re-route the daisy chains to more sensible layouts (at the moment in one building I have a switch 8 feet from the core vertically and the link travels 60m to the other side of the campus before it hits another switch.) so, fingers crossed the re-jig will help. Basically, what I'm up against here is about 10 years of neglect during which time my predecessors were sold first a netgear, and then a ruckus wireless system and basically told 'you'll never need to worry about wires again'. I'm finding spliced cables. stuff still plugged into switches but chopped off and shorting above ceilings, some things wired A standard, some things wired B standard, archaic R&M patch panels which break when you patch stuff, nonsensical wiring layouts - like the one I mentined above, and just general wierdness. I also have one line that will not run at gig with a PC on it despite it testing fine with a fluke tester and both the switch port and the PC working fine hung on other lines.

A couple of weeks ago someone said they thought the internet was less snappy than usual, you know, you'd click on something, you'd wait a bit and everything would appear all at once. That didn't sound right, so I did a couple of speedtests and lo and behold most computers were getting 95-105 (on a 100/100mbps) connection but only 3-15 up. I tried from the switch the router is connected to and got 95 both ways. I tested the link and it seemed OK but I had a plan to install a multiple link anyway. I pulled in a test cable just with plugs on the end and it fixed it for most machines - 95 both ways. So I pulled in 2 new cables, created a trunk on the switches, connected and tested again - back to 95/10???? I reterminated the new links - no change. I changed the patch cables - BOOM 95 both ways???? Now I'm testing every wired PC and anything that looks wrong I'm changing the patch cables and in the majority it's fixing it, so what the hell is going on!! I've also got another line that refuses to run at gigabit even though it tests OK on a fluke tester, both patch cables are new, the client and the switch are known good and work as intended if patched elsewhere.

This is entirely anecdotal, but here goes... I'm finding that HDDs don't seem to fail as often and spectacularly as they used to. However with low energy drives (WD green) and 5400 spin drives, particularly from Toshiba, WD and Seagate they seem to be much more tolerant of issues. For me this feels like their performance seems to degrade abruptly after about 2 years and then sit at a level for ages whilst getting thrashier and more error prone but not really getting any worse in terms of noticeable performance. Interestingly I've got 5400 spin laptop HDD from Hitachi and Samsung that are now 5 and 7 years old respectively in external caddies and both of them benchmark better than a brand new WD blue. I wonder if it is significant that 2 years feels like when the performance degrades and 2 years is when most of the warranties expire?

It's currently a hybrid. It's a scaleout from an internal system that will eventually become an office365 deployment after it was decided that O365 could be made sufficiently secure. I've got a friend working on it - no he didn't send the email, but he knew (past tense) the person who did.

Seems unlikely. I'm watching it just fine on IE11. Check your IE options, advanced and then the multimedia section. I had an issue just like you're describing which turned out to be a setting - ticking 'enable alternatice codecs in HTML 5 media elements', 'play animations in web pages' and 'play sounds in webpages' (or it's GPO equivalent) and then a restart of the computer and Youtube was happy and working again.
