We upgraded from our old Smoothwall S8 box to a new S9 in 2022. I can say that it very easily copes with upwards of 1,300 users all hammering a 1Gbps line with proxy, https inspection, AD accounting and content modification without problems. It's also pretty stable only receiving a reboot maybe once a term. The winner for Smoothwall is the safeguarding reporting, now a requirement in KCSIE, which is the best of any content management system I know.

We've done the opposite, gradually migrated towards 365 and ditched the last bastion of Google last week when trips moved over to Teams. So it's Google that we've said goodbye to.

We still have Stone NT310-H and Stonebook Pro laptops which are 6+ years old. Some testing has shown that W11 works perfectly fine on them using MDT for deployment (not the commercial installer). These are all for loan, no longer issued to staff.

In our case, their issued iPads. The amount of issues they generated, especially their terrible performance with wi-fi and Teams, really brought home their limitations.

Silo is very well written (based on the book Wool by Hugh Howey) and reveals its secrets slowly. The adaptation for the screen is truly excellent and so is the high-quality cast. Thrilling SF and I'm glad it's been renewed for S2.

I'm doing a little research into whether schools deploy laptops to teachers or not. If you do, are they well accepted by teachers for working in school? What about working at home (i.e. do they take them home)? What about any DSE issues when using them at desks at work? Background: I have a financial controller who would like to deploy laptops instead of desktops so that teachers have a remote solution without us having to vet home computers. He does not want the additional cost of docks. The academic director is a little concerned about long-term use and any DSE implications from using small screens, crouching over the device etc. He would prefer additional docks and monitors. I personally would like to go with just laptops to provide teachers with mobility and flexibility and reduce the costs. Any insight into what you are doing would be most welcome.

Do you archive mailboxes as inactive? We do for staff for 7 years after they have left, so this will add to the storage consumed.

Agreed. Although we have a backup FTTC line, it follows the same route as the main leased line. So we now have a 2nd backup 5G installation.
